7 mana? Easy thing turn 4. I play Vish Kal all the time, but as a finisher. She's going into the 99 though, but not at the helm. I like to sacrifice creatures to my commanders.
wassup guys..im new to edh and i just kinda finished my teysa deck...i have no idea how to build one so i based my teysa deck on yours...my play group plays a lot of land mass destruction and im really having trouble dealing it... any suggestion?

Put your list up, and I can tell you some improvements to be made. Against mass LD, Faith's Reward, Avacyn, Angel of Hope are the most evident from the top of my head.
I was all set to build an Orzhov extort deck with new Teysa providing some sort of cool new ability to lead the charge...but then I took one look at her casting cost and everything fell apart. What a let-down.
If she was a 1/1 for 4, that'd be a different story, but 7 for a 4/4 is just bad. 7 drops are for green decks with infinite ramping, not black/white value decks. Even Dread is hard to play at 6/6 for 6 mana.

Artifact mana helps get around that another thing that works as a minor but strict upgrade is to play flagstones of trokair and a little worse dakmor salvage those both get around it some. Avacyn won't actually get around mass LD as stop it from being cast which is okay.

I feel you. I've been trying to make a big dude B/W deck, and it's moderately successful. Ashnod's Altar basically makes your guys Sol Rings. My Vish Kal deck controls the board until it gets huge creatures out and wins the game. Most of my finishers are CMC7 or CMC6 (Elesh, Sheoldred, Vish) or just big huge tokens with Cathar's Crusade. I first dismissed the enchantment, but I've never been so wrong about a card in my life (at the exception of Comet Storm, which is the best instant I've ever dismissed as bad)

i think i am starting to have a vision regarding my purpose in life regarding the new Teysa. ill keep you guys posted
Awesome deck. Love your altered Teysa (no more creeper dude). Would be a pleasure to play or play against. I've been considering an Orzhov Commander deck for a while now. Not sure whether to use old Teysa, new Teysa or Vish.
If your going with a more token based teysa Cathar's crusade is nuts, if you have teysa on board and they wrath you could easily have 4 5/5's and continue wrecking face
something like increasing devotion wins games very quickly as you put 30 power on board with just the first cast.
As soon as you move into goodstuff instead of combo that should be the first card you add

Hope to see this as a primer soon
The new teysa and vish both suffer from costing way too much in black white. As commanders if they die your just kind of SOL as you might be able to cast them once more in a game. I cast teysa 1.0 2-3 times each game something I couldn't do if I was playing commander that cost soo much more.
so I see teysa as the best choice in black white, followed by both ghost councils.
If your playing something just for colors I would probably play ghost council 2.0. He gets that value.
Put your list up, and I can tell you some improvements to be made. Against mass LD, Faith's Reward, Avacyn, Angel of Hope are the most evident from the top of my head.
avacyn, angel of hope is nice for indestructability but some of my playmates uses mass land removals by sacing...
Artifact mana helps get around that another thing that works as a minor but strict upgrade is to play flagstones of trokair and a little worse dakmor salvage those both get around it some. Avacyn won't actually get around mass LD as stop it from being cast which is okay.
-cloudgoat ranger
- dimir house gaurd (I played him to really poor results)
- bloodghast (he's just underwhelming)
- Marshall's anthem (seems bad unless you have coffers online)
- vizkopa guildmage (why? Maybe I'm missing something
- viscera seer
- suture priest
- skirsdag (seems okay I'm not sold though)
Sad robot is good Darksteel ingot is good Mana vault is good Armillary sphere is really slow the only time you would want it is recovering from a Armageddon. Mind stone may be my favorite mana rock as you can use then trash it for a new card
So you have room to cut whatever you feel is applicable
Then you can replace two land with flagstones and dakmor
I noticed you only had 35 land that seems low I run 38 it makes my starting hand better
Bloodghast is AWESOME and one of the easiest to recur. You can get great value out of him. I will never cut him out of my list.
I have never had him do much honestly, but my only self recurring dude I have is nether traitor, my only non combo's are all heavy weights on thier own
Having Bloodghast on hand, sacrificing him, then playing a land, and sacrificing him again is a pretty deadly issue, especially with some of the good sacrifice effects in this deck. I agree with Vizkopa though, it seems like a very underwhelming card.

That's what's fun with Vish. He gets up from his throne ONCE, and destroys everyone when he does. I usually let him go to the grave instead of the command zone, it's easier to reanimate him and I don't really much care if I'm shuffling him in my library, because I can get him back.

Like Mic1994 said the casting cost is a huge factor in choosing a commander. black and white isnt very well suited mana wise to handle 6+ generals going to the commander zone many times. we will exclude new Teysa for a moment as she is brand new and has yet to be tested. as for choosing a general they are all pretty good for commander i mean it really depends on which one you like the most and which one you think will be fun. Keeping my bias aside. i find Teysa 1.0 to be very effective for her mana cost. i find myself having to recast her at least 2-4 times a game .my meta has it out for her lol. and i love the abilities .
Vish can be pretty devastating but like i said the mana. so i would run plenty of protection (lightning Greaves) etc .
New Teysa is a conundrum we have to pretty much assume that her token ability is never going to be effective. maybe in those few instances where your opp wants their creature dead with a skullclamp on them or something but we cant really rely on that. i feel the best approach with her is a heavy attrrtion base with armageddon and balance type effects. i know this sounds weird because she cost 7 but its not about the mana cost its about how you can break the symmetric effects of such cards to where it doesnt matter ( eg empty your mana from lands then cast Armageddon then cast Teysa )
but that is my own view. the only "force opps creatures to attack" cards that are in b and w are really bad and they dont force the opp to attack just you, but anyone
as for the Ghost Dads they both seem pretty boring to me so i wont tread their. he has a lot of back up support in these threads so if you were interested you have the wind against your back ( of course i would help you out too)
If your going with a more token based teysa Cathar's crusade is nuts, if you have teysa on board and they wrath you could easily have 4 5/5's and continue wrecking face

Cathar's Crusade is crazy even without a token theme. just play creatures in a normal deck and its already "pretty good"

yeah i agree with this ^ unless you want to risk sending them to the GY and reanimating them ( which Band Wdoes plenty of)

well its pretty much a clone of my posted deck in the OP. the land count is low because the curve is low. however it can easily be adjusted to each players needs. most the cards that you suggested he take out are very powerful but you got to know how to use them ( in that regard i understand why you are confused about the guildmage) i will invite you to read the card discussion section of the OP. i cant take credit for skirsdag i dont run him. seems ok though
dimir house guard tutors for wrath effects and Faiths Reward more important then anything else if mld is his concern so i would say leave it in for that reason alone.
if he is looking for more mana rocks and a better defense against MLD then i think those cards might be a good start. i have always been partial too Second Sunrise type effects so i would suggest that (maybe no SS because it works for everyone)
Having Bloodghast on hand, sacrificing him, then playing a land, and sacrificing him again is a pretty deadly issue, especially with some of the good sacrifice effects in this deck. I agree with Vizkopa though, it seems like a very underwhelming card.
i always found myself needing a good source of lifegain and i didnt want to run a card that did ONLY that and she only costs 2 so she seemed good to me and has been amazing. activating her second ability multiple times really clocks your opponents. i can see it being under appreciated. the card is still pretty new and not many people have bothered to even try it out.
I'm choosing not to quote you due to length but about your points
perhaps I need a little more land because I often get some land removed here and there as well as some artifact destruction acidic slime and sylvan primordial as well as terastodon hit the table a lot as well as strip mine and vesuva on strip mine or on my urborg
I tutored for wrath's so consistently with dimir house guard I simply put another wrath in lol but that's too each his own
about my card suggestion perhaps i'll expand and then if we still disagree fine marshal's anthem is really disentomb (possibly double disentomb) with a bonus and i'd rather play beacon of unrest or the new beacon of unrest we're getting in dragon's maze.
I play serra's ascendant as lifegain and I can find it with ranger of eos which simultaneously finds carrion feeder which is an infinite piece
I have never kept a board for long enough for something like cathar's crusade to be good as I can't let commander's like riku sit out they'll just play bigger dudes then me, as well as it often gets nuked before it really gets online for long.
bloodghast perhaps I was wrong? seems like a lot of support he was one of the first cards removed so I may have missed something but my sac engines don't stay on the table they die often before it gets back to my turn
cloudgoat ranger seems like a bad grave titan I know he costs one less and gives a teysa unmake in tokens, but grave titan keeps giving and comes on a body which can kill kozilek, as well as other really big dudes as well as eat most of the annihilator
My list however often ends up with a need to wrath a lot more then anyone else's here as well, so often my strategy winds up being slow rolling threats they have to deal with until they commit to the board i.e sheoldred, the whispering on and elesh norn, grand cenobyte, all while building up combo pieces. The only time I don't win via combo is when I go aggro and bait them with combo pieces.

Cloudgoat ranger is actually gtting cut soon for Belfry Spirit which is strictly better. i know Titan is better and has a lot of power but there is a alot of clone, reanimate, and recloneimator in my meta so avoiding cards like Grave Titan is like insurance sadly lol that why you dont see Wurmcoil either. maybe i will reconsider G-Titan one day.i guess its a meta call at this point
as for your list, their is quite a bit of conditional wraths out their that you might actually benefit from. idk what your running but PLague Wind and Retribution of the Meek come to mind (RotM keeps Serra'a Ascendant around)
idk whats up with bloodghast. i just never find him as a bad card. i use him to some sacrifice ability perhaps get a couple tokens out of him from Teysa, Ogre Slumlord etc and then i get to keep doing that for free pretty much but if your not finding him effective thats ok. not everyone is going to have the same experience.everyone has at least one card everyone swears by but when they play it , it is lackluster lol
marshalls anthem is the bomb. bringing back even 2-3 creatures is huge power play you just have to know how to set it up. ( i like to use buried alive first) and 10 mana isnt that much that late in the game
well its pretty much a clone of my posted deck in the OP.
@schondetta...yeah i really like how you build your teysa so i pretty much copy it(hope you dont mind). also, do you feel that the deck needs more draw spells? what do you think of disciple of bolas?
@schondetta...yeah i really like how you build your teysa so i pretty much copy it(hope you dont mind). also, do you feel that the deck needs more draw spells? what do you think of disciple of bolas?
yeah its no problem thats what i posted it for and your shapping it into your own image for your own meta. thats magic...the gathering for you! those seem like some good cuts for you. and yes def needs more draw spells.i dont think Disciple of Bolas isnt that great since it draws on creatures with lots of power which this deck doesnt have a lot of. their are better options out there. the deck will work better on something more "systematic" like Infernal Tribute or Necropotence. even cardss that draw alot off one spell like Skeletal Scrying or Ambition's Cost . i know there are a couple other "janky" black spells out their in the older sets that are actually pretty good that no one cares for if i remember them ill post them.
i usually use times like these to gallery through all the old sets for hidden gems on Cardkingdom.com or something.
I could see trade up day of judgment for martial coup but I need to leave one four cost wrath in the deck because ete amount of times I've had to tutor wrath pass turn is too high to not have a cheap wrath on hand
I used guidmage the other night, triple stacked her with falkenrath and suture priest on the board and a **** ton of shenanigans, yeah, I drained 40 life from each player, it was over.
i played 4 games today and i won 3 them out of nowhere...they just let me stay in the game till i got my combo pieces! our pod usually have 4 - 6 players. i probably +1 blind obedience just for maelstrom wanderer deck..he is just pain in the a** to play against. also, ill try the necropotence or underworld connecton for another draw engine.
I could see trade up day of judgment for martial coup but I need to leave one four cost wrath in the deck because ete amount of times I've had to tutor wrath pass turn is too high to not have a cheap wrath on hand
yeah that is a legit reason. i would throw in the plague wind somewhere in there seeing how mana cost is not a concern

yeah i hate MW too. he is all over modo lol. let us know how those work out. necropotence is crazy
Put your list up, and I can tell you some improvements to be made. Against mass LD, Faith's Reward, Avacyn, Angel of Hope are the most evident from the top of my head.

Yeva (88/92 foils)
Raff
Scarab
Rakdos
Wort ($50 budget, 94/97 foils)
Trostani
Artifact mana helps get around that another thing that works as a minor but strict upgrade is to play flagstones of trokair and a little worse dakmor salvage those both get around it some. Avacyn won't actually get around mass LD as stop it from being cast which is okay.

yeah its no problem thats what i posted it for and your shapping it into your own image for your own meta. thats magic...the gathering for you! those seem like some good cuts for you. and yes def needs more draw spells.i dont think Disciple of Bolas isnt that great since it draws on creatures with lots of power which this deck doesnt have a lot of. their are better options out there. the deck will work better on something more "systematic" like Infernal Tribute or Necropotence. even cardss that draw alot off one spell like Skeletal Scrying or Ambition's Cost . i know there are a couple other "janky" black spells out their in the older sets that are actually pretty good that no one cares for if i remember them ill post them.
i usually use times like these to gallery through all the old sets for hidden gems on Cardkingdom.com or something.
necropotence
promise of power
underworld connections
are good draw spells
@ Schondetta
you asked for my list of wraths
I could see trade up day of judgment for martial coup but I need to leave one four cost wrath in the deck because ete amount of times I've had to tutor wrath pass turn is too high to not have a cheap wrath on hand

yeah that is a legit reason. i would throw in the plague wind somewhere in there seeing how mana cost is not a concern
now thats what im talking about ! <3
yeah i hate MW too. he is all over modo lol. let us know how those work out. necropotence is crazy
