Teferi's Veil doesn't help with Warstorm Surge/Pandemonium. Don't forget that phasing doesn't cause things to leave or enter the battlefield. The game just treats them as though they don't exist, and then they start existing again. They never leave, never change zones, etc.
If I were going to play, or even consider, either of those cards, it would almost certainly be Warstorm Surge over Pandemonium. While it does cost more, the last thing I want is to die to my own enchantment when someone else plays a Blightsteel Colossus or something. Even without the infect, I use (abuse) my own life total a lot, and I don't want to give my opponents an easy way to just burn me out.
As far as Warstorm Surge itself goes, it's an Enchantment, which is one of the card types I want the least, since it's the hardest to recur in these colours, and I feel like the cost really is too much for what it's doing. If we could reanimate things like Blightsteel Colossus ourselves it might be a little different, but cards like him (and the good Eldrazi) have those pesky shuffle-back-in effects. I think the card would just end up being something I'd never want to cast, because there are other things I'd rather do with six mana, or it would either do nothing or just be win more. Very rarely would it fall in between.
Added to the "Why play Sedris?" section (including a comparison with Sidisi, Brood Tyrant), added strengths/weaknesses section, and fixed some typos and broken card links.
Hey, this seems like a great primer! I thought I'd chime in with a few cards that I've found to be great in my Sedris list. Insidious Dreams & Read the Runes are both incredible looting options. My deck really revolves around Living Death and Twilight's Call, and both of these cards fit really well with that plan. Both are instants, so you can cast either to great effect right before your turn. Also, you gotta have Frantic Search on the list, right? My list is a little more casual than yours, so I use Viscera Seer in place of Sadistic Hypnotist. Another "cute" card for Sedris, if you're putting together a less competitive list is Body Snatcher which is great early in the game if you want a blocker against aggressive decks, or some wipe insurance. If you don't want to spring for uber-Jace, Jace, the Living Guildpact is an able replacement (and even better in the deck sometimes). Incidentally, since deck is a little more alpha-strikey, you can never go amiss with putting Kira, Great Glass-Spinner in to put a stop on most instant speed answers when you're trying to "go off".
Thanks! I'll never complain about praise! As for some of the cards you mentioned:
Living Death is definitely a great card, but I've already covered a couple times why I don't really want to play it. It is entirely possible, though, that it'll end up in the deck at some point, if some other things change. Also, I don't really like Twilight's Call. It costs more than Living Death and the benefit isn't nearly as high.
Insidious Dreams is an interesting card, but I don't like that it: 1) is card disadvantage, and 2) does absolutely nothing if its your only card in hand, like when you top-deck it late game. Read the Runes is cute, but as I've said a couple times throughout this thread, I've got a heavier focus on things that fill the yard without actually "discarding", along with ways that also give card advantage (Fact or Fiction and Sphinx of Uthuun being some of the absolute best). Beyond that, I haven't really felt like I've needed more than I have, and I don't think that's better than the ones I have.
Frantic Search is a solid card, and I'm pretty sure it's on my card options list. I still don't think it's better than anything I'm already playing, and even then, I'm pretty sure Faithless Looting is better. You can cast it on turn 1 to follow up with a Reanimate or Animate Dead, and it's got Flashback for extra value.
I don't actually think Body Snatcher is a cute card at all, I think it's a really good card. I think if I were playing a build with more sac effects and whatnot, I'd probably include this guy. I built a mono-Black Sidisi, Undead Vizier deck that was running it, and it was fantastic.
I was apparently mistaken and Frantic Search was actually not already in the card options, so I added it.
Also added Body Snatcher and Diabolic Intent to the options list. They should have been there before, but got missed.
I like the changes to the Primer and I think it's coming along great. Do you have any game reports that you could add? I personally really enjoy reading them, but it would also give a way for your readers to see how cards in your deck work and more directly show how your deck works.
How has Nezumi Graverobber been for you? I remember playing it in my mono-Black deck and remember it being really slow. Has that been the case for you? It either flips really fast or sits there looking small and not Reanimator-ish.
Hmm, game reports aren't really something I had previously considered, but I could look into it. Or maybe put up some Cockatrice replays or something.
See, the thing about Nezumi Graverobber is that I don't really look at it as a reanimation spell. I tend to think of it as being like a black Scavenging Ooze. Most of the time I won't need the reanimation effect, and he'll just sit there eating graveyards with any extra mana I have. But every once in a while he comes down early, flips quickly, and becomes a must-answer. It's a card I couldn't really ever see cutting.
I expanded on the strategy section a bit and added Chainer, Dementia Master to the card options list. Probably should have been there already, not sure how I forgot it.
My sedris list is a bit different than yours, more creature heavy. How do you find conjurers closet and teferis veil effects (etc.) help you in a game? Personally I haven'had the need to run it.
Teferi's Veil is particularly good. It's a card I end up tutoring for almost every game. The fact that it both lets us keep the things with Unearth AND also protects us from anything sorcery speed is absolutely fantastic. It's a card I could absolutely never see cutting from Sedris.
Conjurer's Closet is not quite as good, mostly because of the cost, but it's still fantastic. This one also serves a double purpose of letting us keep things we Unearth and letting us reuse sweet ETB effects (especially Sphinx of Uthuun and Rune-Scarred Demon). I wouldn't cut this one either, but I could see an argument for playing another of the Unearth breaking cards, like Sundial of the Infinite.
You inspired me to actually post something instead of lurk around. This is an amazing primer, and an awesome list.
On the subject of the actual general, has the unearth trigger ever completely blown you out before? I had a friend who ran a Sedris deck, and he would always complain about being blown out by unearth.
There are certainly times when I set up and go through a whole turn progression where I'm working under the assumption that I'm going to have a Teferi's Veil on the table or a Conjurer's Closet, etc, and it gets blown up or countered before it ever has a chance to save my important things. It definitely happens, and it's the sort of thing to generally try to hang onto things like Counterflux for and whatnot. But most times that I go hard into it, it's because my opponents have tapped out and whatnot. Otherwise it's important to play more cautiously.
Also, thanks a lot for the praise! It's always appreciated. I'm glad you like the primer and the deck!
Added Necromancy and Dance of the Dead to the card options. They should have been there ages ago, somehow completely forgot to add them.
Also, I'm contemplating adding in Karn Liberated, mostly for enchantment/catch-all removal, but I'm not sure what to cut for it. I'm open to suggestions.
Just a little update: I've been testing a bit with Karn Liberated in place of River Kelpie. I'm pretty sold so far on the addition of Karn. I haven't really missed the Kelpie too much yet. May end up making this change permanent.
Chainer, Dementia Master is definitely a powerful card, but it's incredibly black heavy and makes for a somewhat fragile board presence.
I've found that most of the time I would cast Chainer, I'd rather just be casting Sedris, the Traitor King himself. I've actually cut down on the reanimation effects a lot throughout this deck's life, as I've often found that Sedris is all I need.
So, after lots of thinking and brewing in my head, here's a list that I'm contemplating. I plan for this to be my more fair deck, for more casual play. It's mostly creature based and is here for me as a record of my list. What do you think? I need to cut about 10 cards, which makes me sad because I want to play all the cards!
For a more casual oriented deck, I'd say it seems mostly fine.
Even casually, there are some cards I probably wouldn't include here, like Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast. I pretty much feel those cards should never be in
any EDH deck. They're way, way too narrow, and will very frequently just be dead cards.
I like that you included Dark Petition in there. That card seem like it might have some potential, but I haven't yet had the opportunity to try it out.
The Blasts are a reflection of my meta. Every deck I play against, except maybe two, is blue based or has some blue somewhere in it. They are most often going to be one-mana removal spells or ways to force my own spells through. They're cheap and efficient.
I actually just edited the decklist, and Dark Petition got the cut. I count only 13 instants and sorceries combined, including it. I'm looking for this to be a more creature based deck I realize, which is fine. So I'm looking for creature substitutes for most of the cards that I can.
Question for you: have you considered Mirror-Mad Phantasm? Consider it like a blue Hermit Druid effect, and it could be quite effective at making your 'yard massive for Sedris' ability or a big Living Death.
Mirror-Mad Phantasm is kind of a neat idea, but it costs way too much. 4UUU to cast and activate. It also ends up leaving you super open to getting your graveyard nuked, just like Hermit Druid does, which could end up leaving you in a really, really bad spot.
I think it depends on your meta, of course, but in my goldfishes it's been a good way to instant speed bin my 'yard so that I get the pick of my deck's best creatures to Unearth or otherwise reanimate. I think I have less 'yard hate in my meta than you might see. And I also think I have more of an emphasis on creature interactions. I've changed my decklist again some more to reflect cards that I like more than others. I'll try and track the changes later.
On a different note, have you considered Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx? In my deck, I have 41 B symbols, so it's an easy inclusion for me. What do you think would be the margin of mana symbols to consider using it?

I have a really hard time seeing myself running Nykthose, Shrine to Nyx outside of a mono coloured deck. I'm sure it would be fine most of the time, but I'm not sure it would be good enough to be worth the slot, over things that are more guaranteed to make mass mana (like Cabal Coffers), and lands that will always make all colours of mana, or valuable utility effects.
Also, yeah, my meta is packed with graveyard hate. It has taught me to play very cautiously with my graveyard, and no overextend into it.
very nice deck and Primer !!
keep on going with noncombo inspirational decks
Glad you like it! I generally try to make most of my decks with the ability to combo off in a pinch, but never focused around it. It's how I have the most fun playing, and it allows me to fit into just about any playgroup/meta.
My apologies if you already covered this, but did you consider Intuition? It seems like it would function the same way as Buried Alive, but with the added benefit of getting one creature into your hand.
You know, I actually hadn't considered Intuition. For some reason I always just kinda passed over it. It's like I forgot what it did or something.
That's a great suggestion. I really like that one. I'm probably going to find a slot for it in the near future. Thanks.
