My situation is very similar. I play in paper exclusively as well. So while I have a fairly unrestricted budget, I too must build decks within reason. It sounds as if modern is your primary focus which skews things slightly as I focus on commander alone.
That being said, I suggest you invest in commander if you plan to play it long term. It should pay off in terms of gains. Commander staples hold their value well as players tend to actuality want the cards to play the game. You could spend around 60 Euros on cards for your Atraxa deck and add Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Sylvan Library. All of these cards are so very powerful and efficient for the mana. Also, as someone purchasing with Euros you actually save money as the same cards would cost about 105 USD or about 85 Euros.
With cards this 'cheap' the real question is: do you want to homogenize your deck with staples this way? You wont have as much room for the synergy cards and you will probably find games will become more similar. I like having access to these powerful cards but thats my style.
It sounds to me as if the tuning has gone well. I love Crystalline Crawler, it is such a powerful mana creature in Atraxa lists. I even run it in superfriends. It is free if you use 4 different mana to cast it and its ramp if you have any counter increasing cards.
Also there's a new card from Commander 18, Ravenous Slime that fits very well with Atraxa. It is graveyard hate and has +1/+1 counter effects. I'm going to play this in place of Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet; it's a shame since Kalitas remains my favorite card in Magic but he'll continue to do great things in my Meren deck.
Kalitas is such a great card! IMHO miles ahead of Ravenous Slime. My friend plays this card in Estrid and without proper interaction alongside it, it's just not that good.
I can see why it fits the theme though, And might be better in a superfriends deck, but i'd rather play Scavenging Ooze and Anafenza, the Foremost.
I'm loving the format and the deck so far, and the brewer in me has peaked again.
I'm not denying Kalitas is not great but I really don't think he's at his full potential with Atraxa, at least not in my playgroup. He just seems like a general good stuffs card but doesn't really add much synergy. That being said, my play group loves graveyard strategies so more graveyard hate is never unwelcoming so I might also put Kalitas back in at some point. But at the end of the day, the goal of Atraxa +1/+1 counters is to go tall and Ravenous Slime fits that strategy better.
Also note that Ravenous Slime doesn't say "non-token" creature unlike Kalitas in case your friends try to life-drain you by sac'ing tokens.
That is true, and if the graveyard synergy is important then the card probably is worthwhile. It's just that i've seen the card in action from across the table and it didn't strike me as very stong. It can be my meta though. I can see its triggered ability work wonders against sacrifice style decks
An upcomming card that is strong for it's synergy and utility is Knight of Autumn. I'm looking forward to give this a try in Atraxa and will also use it to replace most, if not all, Reclamation Sages in my other constructed decks
Knight of Autumn is very cool. It doesn't fit in my superfriends build but I will be using it in my bant blink deck. I think it will be playable in quite a few formats.
Yeah I'm putting Kalitas back in ; he's just too good to exclude if you're expecting graveyard-based decks.
I also take back what I said earlier about Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. He's a great card but in this deck he's a non-bo. I thought he would be another source of counters but waiting until he hits the field and having my creatures die just for one +1 counter is too slow.
Hi Xeroxed Fool. I decided to post my Atraxa list (or at least, one version - probably a couple iterations old) and I noticed that you don't play Jace, Cunning Castaway. He goes infinite with Doubling Season, and he's won a few games for me. Any reason that you're not running him? He's mostly useless in a non-Doubling world, but it's a cute combo (and honestly, in a Superfriends build, when is Doubling Season NOT the first card you tutor up?).

There is a lot to unpack in a multicolored set such as this one. Mentor is a goodish ability for Atraxa as it involves +1 counters. Convoke is mostly whatever and always has been. Surveil is nice as a mechanic but I don't think its specifically good for Atraxa decks. The same goes for undergrowth, its nice but I haven't seen a ton of graveyard based Atraxa decks. Jump Start is not awesome. It will have its place in certain decks but I think it is one of the worse mechanics from this set (for Atraxa).
White Cards:
Venerated Loxodon is a card that can be used in +1 counter builds. I dont think it is very good as it inspires you to over commit to the board, but it can be a potentially cheap source of counters.
Light of the Legion doesn't make too much sense to me. Who is going to spot remove this card for you so you can get counters? Why sacrifice this yourself? It seems poorly designed. Classic crap rare. I only mention it because it does counter things.
Blue Cards:
Mission Briefing is just good. I don't think it is something I will use, but it should see some play in the format.
Black Cards:
Doom Whisperer is another card that will be good in the format. It is designed with graveyards in mind, but it is also a powerful card selection engine as well.
Mausoleum Secrets is not good. Don't run this card please. I only mention it to warn people..
Plaguecrafter is another card that will probably see play in the format. It is actually good AGAINST us. Watch out for this card.
Price of Fame is pretty cool. It kills commanders for cheap and gives you some card selection. Its a nice option for black decks in the format.
Green Cards:
Pelt Collector is interesting for counters builds. I wouldn't devote a slot to it personally, but it can have applications.
Multicolor Cards:
Assasin's Trophy is an awesome card for the format. It's very cheap to cast and can answer any problem. This is the only card in the set that I will be adding to this deck.
Etrata the Silencer. You cant proliferate the counters, but that would be awesome.
Knight of Autumn is really nice. It can act as removal or a big beater that comes down the turn before you play Atraxa. It is a very nice card for all the counter builds.
Vraska, Golgari Queen is sadly the only planeswalker we have in this set. It is a good card, but not obviously playable in the deck. We dont run any cards we actively want to sacrifice to draw cards. The removal ability is nice but not very efficient or versatile in commander. Her ultimate can be strong, but it doesn't do the doubling season thing and can be negated with removal. Overall a card I would rather play in standard, if I played it, and I don't think it will make my deck.
Hey all. I've been lurking this thread for a while. I have an Atraxa build myself, but it's a themed deck, so not really built to be as optimized as possible; because of that, I haven't really felt the need to comment.
However, I did want to make a note about your review for Etrata. While I agree that it does not work in Atraxa, even if you could proliferate the Hit counters, it wouldn't do anything. The counters go on the card, but Etrata cares about the number of cards with counters. So even if one card ended up with 15 counters somehow, the owner still wouldn't lose the game.
Assassin's Trophy is the best removalspell ever printed imho and an obvious include in every deck that supports it across all formats. Only downside, I need a few
Knight of Autumn to me is an auto include in Atraxa +1/+1 too. It can grow, is on curve and It's great utility when needed.
Furthermore, I agree with everything you say about the new cards and Atraxa decks. But for other builds, my own included, there are some true gems in there.
Love the set
The upcoming set looks pretty underwhelming for Atraxa. The only playable cards in this set may not even be better than our existing options. Assassin's Trophy is the first one that comes to mind; while it's cheaper than Anguished Unmaking and doesn't bolt yourself, the lack of an exile effect and ramping your opponent may be an even bigger detriment. Knight of Autumn could be sweet though but I'm not particularly excited for it; the versatility is nice but each of its options is pretty subpar.
I guess we'll just have to wait until Simic comes around for more +1/+1 counter supports.
I'd add two of the undergrowth cards as possible playables in Atraxa counters. Since it's a creature heavy deck they could help rebuilding after wrath effects in a similar way Genesis Hydra does.
Hatchery Spider has a very similar cast trigger like Genesis Hydra but on a bigger butt at the same cmc rate AND has reach, which can be a good thing since we are very grounded most of the time.
Downside is, you need to have a lot of guys killed to have the best effect. Like the Hydra, this could be the best way to regain a stong board after a wrath.
Dreamland scenario: After wrath, topdecked Hydra for X=7 into the spider into Zegana, draw 8.
Golgari Raiders is just a big dumb guy which should come in large and gets even larger. The lack of evasion though makes it a budget option in the allready crowded 4drop spot and nowhere near the T4 play.
I think Assasin's Trophy is better than Anguished Unmaking, Beast Within, and Vindicate. I think you can supplement its weakness with other removal spells.
I think very highly of this card. Just not in this build. Theoretically you should be able to get some triggers, it won't be enough to get repetitive removal out of it.
Cool, in that case I'll try him out. Also I should mention that the lifegain would be in addition to all the other sources of +1/+1 counters, so I think I should have enough to consistently keep Karlov at 6+ counters. Otherwise I think Retribution of the Ancients is fine but because my playgroup likes graveyard strategies, the exile clause is more relevant to me. Plus Karlov has the added bonus of being a huge beatstick on an empty board.
Hey guys, great thread, seen some things I haven't though about. I've been playing Atraxa Superfriends for a while and I'm still trying to tune the deck.
I'm going for the almost creature less version, control version that eventually grinds out a win with PWs or with Tezzert's ultimate and beatdown with artifacts. I've onyl won once with Atraxa and it was a very weird game.
Hey sorry for the slow response, thanks for commenting. I like your deck quite a lot. It has a lot of good themes and cards to help with nullifying creatures, which is generally the decks weakness.
I might like a couple more counters for those must stop spells. On a similar note you are missing non-creature removal as well.
It has been a while since i posted, but we have been playing commander with the group extensively over the past few months and Atraxa is still my go-to battlecruiser deck.
It has a slight toolboxy feel to it and i'm considering adding a little more tutoring like Eladamri's Call to get specific things at certain times. I will probably drop the infinite life combo at that point. Spike Weaver has proven to be an all star against most go wide go big strategies like the UR Dragon or Sidisi. But also has great political power.
Key to winning is holding up countermagic for that moment where your boardstate or life gets threatened.
I wanted to swap the power of Merciless Eviction in favor of versatility Austere Command but the exile clause has proven to be too valuable against Marchesa, the Black Rose in my playgroup, so that stays in for now.
By this time, i've had my fair share of wins in the group but the decks tend to get more and more focussed. Commander has proven to be an excellent way to play the game casually. I have put together more decks to get a feel for different strategies and i must say. Most are a blast to play, But Atraxa feels strongest of them all
Hey Atraxa players, It has been a good while but we have some new Planeswalkers to look at.
Dovin, Grand Arbiter is the newest version of Dovin Baan. I like this card for its unique design. The +1 and -1 abilities work well together. The ultimate is a better Dig Through Time, which is a card I really like.
The issue with this Dovin is the context in which I would be playing it. I don't run many creatures to take advantage of the +1. There was a time when I used tokens to block but I have since moved away from that. Its ultimate doesn't go well with Doubling Season and It also takes two turns or more even with Atraxa.
Kaya, Orzhov Usurper is another unique design. The abilities can be useful and commander is one of the formats where a large exile zone can easily occur. The only issue I have with this card is that it doesn't impact the game very well. It doesn't draw cards or add to your board. Removing a Sol Ring can be nice but if they have it turn 1 it has already had a large impact on the game. I might try this card as it adds some removal, but I'm not overly excited.
What about Dovin, Architect of the Law? It's expensive but you can draw a card or tap a potential threat. The ultimate isn't really that impacting in multiplayer commander, though...

Good to see some activity in this topic. It has been a while.
New tools for several Atraxa builds comming up! To me, Simic Ascendancy pops out obviously, but so does the Jellyfish Hydra Beast from 6cmc and upwards.
De past couple of months the deck and my meta have evolved some more, and it's starting to focus more on power rather than fun. Atraxa still is prime target, even when it's unwarranted at that particular moment, because they often times see very explosive plays from my side of the table. I'd say it's lack of proper threat assessment But i guess that's what Atraxa's presence does to the table. So i had to adapt.
two things i'm stil contemplating are:
1) Should i stick with the added value of Arcane Denial or drop it for the more efficient Swan Song.
2) Would Rampant Growth be preferable over Fellwar Stone. Obviously Three Visits would be the one, but for what it does, that one is way to expensive. Maybe if i would ever add ABUR duals
Atraxa will always be a target. Its just the nature of the commander.
Arcane Denial vs Swan Song is an interesting topic. I like the fact that Denial counters everything in this situation. Having both could be sweet but I know how tight lists can be.
I like Fellwar Stone more than Rampant Growth mostly because it can help fix more colors. It is also slightly faster but weaker against removal. You also removed some basic lands in the last update.
I still need an Assassin's Trophy, haven't gotten around to getting one yet.
I agree with both comments. Arcane Denial catches all, and draws me a card. When the war takes place kn the stack it even draws three. But keeping ul two mana is sometimes hard in the early game. Felwar Stone mostly taps for.al my colors in the typical game in my meta. And have indeed cut back on basics. That might be its best selling point for now.
Assassin's Trophy is totally worth it. It's a great catch all when it matters most. Just don't use it early.
Prices have stabilized around €11,- in Europe. So get them now. I bought mine at double that upon release
Also, i've cut Greater Good because the discard 3 often times felt bad and at 4mana was a little steep. Filtering and Drawing is ok at the moment. But protection/saccing for value on board could be better.
What about Yahenni, Undying Partisan and the newly discovered utility piece Together Forever? The former is a great and difficult to deal with threat, the latter has great utility but pretty restrictive casting cost at WW
Curious to hear what you think.
That being said, I suggest you invest in commander if you plan to play it long term. It should pay off in terms of gains. two things i'm stil contemplating are:
1) Should i stick with the added value of Arcane Denial or drop it for the more efficient Swan Song.
2) Would Rampant Growth be preferable over Fellwar Stone. Obviously Three Visits would be the one, but for what it does, that one is way to expensive. Maybe if i would ever add ABUR duals
Edit: It was Thrasios, Triton Hero instead of Knight of Autumn for some extra CA/Ramp in the utility slot. Lowering the curvve even more.

Some more things.
I've cut Ghave, Guru of Spores because the combo with Crystalline Crawler and Cathar's Crusade is powerfull but is 14mana. Is there any way to make it cheaper or more redundant?
Also, i've cut Greater Good because the discard 3 often times felt bad and at 4mana was a little steep. Filtering and Drawing is ok at the moment. But protection/saccing for value on board could be better.
What about Yahenni, Undying Partisan and the newly discovered utility piece Together Forever? The former is a great and difficult to deal with threat, the latter has great utility but pretty restrictive casting cost at WW
Curious to hear what you think.
