--- For Pauper EDH games the deck runs Rhox War Monk as the Commander.
The deck is suited for both Multiplayer and 1v1 games. It's very user-friendly and can be easily modified
with different card options to suit ones personal choices/preferences.
Why Play this Deck?:
- The uncomplicated simplicity of the "Voltron Strategy" is appealing to you, and you like the Bant colors.
- If you would like to play something a bit different and challenge yourself, this may be a good deck for you.
- You want to beat the piss out of your friends decks, but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars doing it.
- You'll have a fully capable and effective deck that's playable in two of the best formats in the game.
- This entire deck can be assembled for under 100$, (and chances are that you probably own half the cards
in this deck already). Rhystic Study and Arcane Signet are the only "big" ticket items in the deck.
- The priceless feeling of satisfaction when you beat down Big $$$ decks with a pile of 99 commons
and a 2$ Bird Wizard.
Derevi is a highly potent and versatile Bant General, who can play the roles of Voltron, Value, and Control.
She provides everything that this deck needs when facing fully powered opponents in Regular EDH games.
Basically... Derevi is an uncounterable self-recurring Pestermite on anabolic steroids, who
enhances the performance of the deck by rewarding every creature in it (including herself)
with a free Twiddle whenever they "beat in" on an opponent.
She also wields both equipment and auras with deadly effect.
Many decks tend to focus on her Twiddle effect, but this deck focuses on her ability to always flash herself
into play from the Command Zone for four mana, which makes Derevi a truly tenacious Voltron General.
She basically dodges counterspells, and literally laughs at the prospect of board wipes and spot removal.
Her Twiddle effect is utilized here for tempo purposes such as untapping your own lands to keep playing
cards out from your hand, and untapping your creatures to provide defense after attacking, and also for control/resource denial purposes in the form of tapping down opponents artifacts, creatures, and lands.
Stating in relation to this particular deck and as a long time Bant player...
Jenara, Asura of War and Rafiq of the Many require a lot of support to keep them alive long enough to have
any reliable impact upon the game, support not readily available at the common rarity card level. Derevi on
the other hand enhances the deck just by her mere presence on the battlefield, she requires minimal support
due in-part to her self-recurring ability and is fully capable of acting independently from the deck if need be.
By all means feel free to try them both out, but you will quickly come to understand what I've stated here.
The Rhox War Monk is a high efficiency beatstick and the go-to General for Bant Voltron in Pauper EDH.
Costing only three mana he comes out quickly, his stats are rock solid and he carries equipment and
auras very well. He's also fairly lenient on the mana required to recast him from the Command Zone.
His Lifelink ability is immensely beneficial, as it can put you way ahead in the game. In the heavily creature
oriented format of Pauper EDH, more life = more time in-game, hence the War Monk gives you far more
favorable odds of winning against decks that lack life gaining abilities.
Pauper EDH is a casual alternative to Regular EDH.
Pauper EDH plays exactly the same as Regular EDH except:
The cards presently in the Derevi PAUPERSLAYER deck listed above are the proverbial "cream of the crop"
in terms of what common rarity cards get you for this style of deck in the Bant colors, and have consistently
proven their worth and earned their spots.
Below I have provided a brief/broad description of each card that I presently run in this deck.
Prime Voltron Targets: Any creature in the deck will do, but these are the best recipients.
Equipment/ Auras: These quickly turn your modest creatures into Formidable Killers.
Bonesplitter: Pauper sword equivelent #1, high efficiency damage boost. Darksteel Axe: Pauper sword equivelent #2, high efficiency damage boost. Thank you Iconic Masters. Vulshok Morningstar: Pauper sword equivelent #3, high efficiency damage/toughness boost. Horned Helm: Excellent trample enabling with stat buffs on this pauper gem. Rancor: High efficiency damage boost with Trample, returns itself, the best voltron aura ever printed. Ethereal Armor: Whites quicker Ancestral Mask, ultra efficient, gives first strike, damage scales up. Hyena Umbra: High efficiency, gives first strike, Totem armor keeps your voltron alive. Shield of the Oversoul: Outstanding aura for your Bant commander, indestructible with evasion. Steel of the Godhead: Outstanding aura for your Bant commander, unblockable with lifelink. Moldervine Cloak: Significant damage/toughness boost, always comes back, absolutely tenacious card. Armadillo Cloak: Trample and pseudo Lifelink on a classic aura , outstanding card. Shielding Plax: Outstanding hexproof aura here, can be used on an opponents creature in rare cases. Snake Umbra: Rewards you with card draw for beating in, Totem armor keeps your voltron alive.
***This deck supports the recursion of these cards so they can be replayed.
Removal/Bounce: Necessary to remove threats, provides some degree of board control.
Counters: They Protect you and yours, and meddle with opponents plans.
Counterspell: The best hard counter in pauper, 2 mana, basic and efficient. Faerie Trickery: The 2nd best hard counter in pauper, exiling is always relevant. Negate: 2 mana, basic and efficient. Protects you and yours, always finds a target.
Recursion: Keeps the ball rolling, provides some degree of redundancy for the deck.
Utility: Provides useful versatility, these are your Swiss Army knives. Momentary Blink: As with all blink effects, it's benefits are useful in many situations. Whitemane Lion: Pauper Restoration Angel equivalent. Kor Skyfisher: A non-targeting Rescue, reuse an ETB, recast/move an enchantment/aura or replay a land.
Mana Curve: Very important influence on efficiency, proper flow of play, and relative deck speed.

The Derevi PAUPERSLAYER deck is highly efficient, plays very smoothly, and is fairly quick.
Common rarity card options:
There are many common rarity options available to a deck like this, which leaves a lot of room for personal
card choices and customization.
Each of these cards has been in this deck at one point or another over this decks history.
You may find some of them useful in your own PAUPERSLAYER build.
The early turns should ideally be used to develop your mana base, you want to hit all 3 colors by turns 3-4,
and should also be spent dropping early threats and/or equipment.
Play your general, suit it up with equipment and auras and send it in. You want to start applying pressure at
the earliest opportunity, and at every opportunity thereafter.
Commander damage is the goal, Regular damage is the secondary goal. Having Fun is always a goal as well.
Speed is your friend here, and often determines the outcome of your games.
It has a few little tricks, but otherwise it's just a really straight forward Voltron deck. Derevi isin fact the
biggest trick you have, as she just keeps coming back again and again.
Use your recursion to keep the ball rolling, Derevi is never gone for long, and she'll want her toys back.
Despite the "comes into play tapped" pauper lands, it's still a fairly quick deck. The Karoo lands are very
beneficial with Derevi's Twiddle ability, actually creating tempo.
Voltron rule #1: Do not spread your attacks out, pick one opponent and focus on them, then move on
to the next one, and then the next. If you start spreading your attacks out too much in a multiplayer game
you will most likely die. The only exception to this is rule #3.
Voltron rule #2: Play proactively at all times, do not spend the game constantly worrying about what
your opponents are trying to do (you will lose that way), it is they who should be worried about what you
are trying to do. Always try to keep them on the defensive,(this mindset will help you win games).
Voltron rule #3: Be opportunistic, this deck is very good at taking out weak players. There is no shame in
taking out any player who's low on life points or is just durdling away doing nothing. It makes your job a
whole lot easier when there are less opponents to deal with at the table, you may even be thanked for it.
Deck History:
Some history on the background of this deck.
4 years ago a friend in my playgroup brought up the subject of an alternative EDH format that was called Pauper EDH, uncommon Commander,... 99 commons... 30 life,... 18 general damage... the following
week everyone had a deck built, I selected the Rhox War Monk, and we had a grand old time with it.
Fast Forward....
So, I've been running this deck for some 4 years now in Pauper EDH, it's my first and still favorite deck in
the format. Running the War Monk I've racked up numerous wins and have rolled many a pod since then.
With the War Monk I experimented with a few different builds, such as running lots of Exalted creatures
to boost his attacks and it did work effectively in combination with equipment and auras. Another build
was an All-In aura/enchantment strategy that had all the supporting creatures and spells geared towards
that theme. It was incredibly fun and very swingy, having an almost Sigardaesque feel to it.
But the most effective build was the "Balanced Bant" deck approach, which had a little bit of everything.
In time the War Monks victories could not be easily counted and the deck was sent up to the Big Leagues,
and the Derevi PAUPERSLAYER deck was born from the intention of wanting to try something different....
About a year and a half ago I switched the Commander over to Derevi on a whim, so I could try the deck in
Regular EDH games, and it evolved into a highly effective "Murder Machine". Every single aspect of the deck
was improved by her presence. It was faster, more efficient, more resilient, and killed quicker. She truly is an
effective commander, even in a deck of 99 commons. Sure the deck get's it's fare share of losses, but it does
not go down quietly. I have taken out many big $$ decks ran by very competent pilots, and have on occasion
ric-rolled 4 man pods with it. It's just immensely fun, and I still love running it to this very day.
As for the deck itself, it has undergone a myriad of changes over the years, and the present deck listed above
is the end product of a whole lot of trial and error. I have tried to stretch commons as far as they can go, and
it turns out that they can go pretty far in this day and age of MTG, especially in the Bant colors.
In the immortal words of the Yavimaya ranger from the old Armadillo Cloak... "Don't laugh, It works."
*** I credit a friend "Jaguar", a Judge over at Brothers Grim Games for coining the term PAUPERSLAYER.
Personal Bio: I've been playing both competitive and casual Mtg for over 23 years. Presently I play with a
fairly large and extensive EDH group out of Brothers Grim Games in Selden, NY and sometimes at Campus
Cards and Games, and Coolstuff Games both in FL when visiting family, you can call me AL.
May the Gods of Bant smile upon you... The Pridemage will see you on your journey now...

in other players as well.
