My friend group and I really enjoy Legacy, much more than standard and modern, but none of us are willing to put down 2000 bucks for a real deck, especially considering as there is zero actual legacy play at our FNM. Luckily, I have unlimited access to a free color laser printer at my work, so I have been proxying some Legacy decks. Right now I have proxied Death and Taxes, Shardless BUG, UW Miracles, and ANT, but I'd like to add two more decks to that gauntlet.
It would be best if it were decks that balance out the others well, so there is no one best deck in the gauntlet, and with interesting matchups. Sideboards can be tuned to fit the other decks better, but I've tried to keep the mainboards similar as when it would be playing against a blind meta (for example DnT only runs one Mirran Crusader even though 33% of its meta is Shardlss BUG).
Which two decks would compliment these decks the best? I've mostly been looking at monored painter, as I find it a very interesting deck, but I have no idea how it matches up against the others. Now Treasure Cruise is banned, I would like to add a Delver+Stifle deck to the mix, since that is definitely an important archetype I am currently lacking. I've been looking at this Temur list:
Painter will Eat BUG and lose hard to DnT. It has an ok match against Miracles and it is a skill intensive game against Storm. You can play hell with the cantrips, but you need to know what lines to play and hands to keep making that a match I like quite a lot. I play the Enlightened version myself though. Mono Red I feel is not as explosive. I though do not know if it is a good fit for that meta.
If I was to play against that Meta and I wanted a mix of good and bad matches I would take in Sneak and Show or Reanimator and 12 Post. Sneak has play against BUG and UW while having a more interesting game against ANT. DnT though it just hellish for Sneak. Reanimator I feel is faster but falls to sideboards and counters a bit more while running its own. Post I think is top against the fairer decks losing to the Combo. UW will never want to see the match though. Another options is Elves. Granted I am biased as hell but I think Elves would have a good amount of fun against DnT (Its a bye matchup most of the time) and Shardless while just folding to UW. It has no small amount of play against ANT post side and that is quite the complex match. Hand disruption and a clock are quite effective.
If I was going in to Spike that list I would likely take BUG Delver. I can think of few things I would want more than Forces and Decays against that field.
There are a few popular decks I would consider before going to a very fringe deck like painter. A cheaty deck, like Sneak and Show, Omnitell, or Reanimator. 12 post is a thing, but fringe.
Elves is still popular. Some amount of practice should be put in against it.
Delver. There's a lot of different lists.
Deathblade. Not as popular as it used to be, I'm not sure why. People say it got weaker when Treasure Cruise was printed, which I don't agree with since I just played with TC myself in it. Anyways, Some sort of blade list would be good to test against.
Lands. It's surprisingly popular, and there are different versions of it. It's good to know at least how it works.
There's others, Dredge, MUD, Goblins, Merfolk, Mogg-catcher, Belcher, Tin Fins, Nic Fit... even slivers. Some of these are obviously more fringe than others.
If you can only make 2 more decks, I would probably do elves and delver, but I think it's probably quite important to have a cheaty deck as well.
While I will only make two decks for now, I'll probably build a few more on a later date. This is mostly because the proxying is a chore and because I'd like to balance the sideboards a bit after adding two new decks to the meta.
I've skipped on elves until now because I knew how terrible of a matchup it is for death and taxes. However, seeing as DnT seems to be strongest of the four decks right now, one bad matchup won't be too much of an issue. Sneak and Reanimator Ive left out because I wanted more complex games than "who has the most counterspells" but it might be better to add at least one for a healthier meta. 12post and lands I hadn't really considered yet, and could possibly be good additions.
As for the required Delver list, I'm reluctant to pick BUG delver, as it is very similar to shardless list-wise. Given that I also want a Stifle deck, the best options are probably either RUG or Patriot aggro
Oh I meant if I knew that was going to be what I faced at an event, I would take BUG. It was not a suggestion to add it.
Elves is a fine add because what you gain in the DnT match you lose in the Miracles one. I feel like if you build Elves, it will need Null Rod in the side.
I've built Elves and RUG for the two possible new decks, these are the lists. If anyone has any suggestions, especially sideboard-wise, please let me know.
Notion Thief is definitely a fun-of in the side, not sure what to run otherwise. Maybe I should make the manabase a little less taxing to not just lose to DnT
The Cliques are a recent addition, swapping out Dig Through Time; I had too few 3-drops for Counterbalance and DTT has been kind of meh. Trying out the Baneslayer Angels as well, seems like they'd be very strong postboard
I don't know much about elves I have to admit. Gaddog Teeg seemed to powerful to pass up, and a boatload of discard to not immediately scoop to ANT. Null Rod as suggested.
I play a ton of legacy and evangelize for it in my community. My gauntlet includes:
1) Death and taxes
2) Shardless BUG
3) RUG Delver
4) Sneak and Show
5) Reanimator
6) Elves
7) Lands
8) ANT
9) Miracles
10) BURN
11) LED Dredge
12) Tezz Affinity
13-14) I regularly mix in some pet decks and brews (pox, bant aggro, painter, etc).
Including any of these will enrich your play experience. They are all fun to play, match up interestingly, and challenge different play skills. I won't make deck list recommendations since the builds and boards (especially) can be tuned for open tournament play or for fun intra-gauntlet play (based on the decks you include).
