I've been dallying about with a UBR discard deck, and it's been in multiple states of being for the past 3 months. Care to rate, and tell me what I need to make it better? I'm trying to keep creatures out of this, and don't want to involve mill. The overall "goal" of this is to get out a Megrim (or two), force the opponent to top deck, and then Quest for the Nihil Stone.
If you're trying for the megrim win, then you're going to need something like urza's guilt, but only as a one or two of. It's a 2 card 10 damage combo to them, provided they have one card in hand.
and the rack is definitely better than quest for the nihil stone as a primary damage condition.
In other news, crazy nitwits playing dress-up have also convicted the Hamburglar, the Cookie Crisp Crook, and the Frito Bandito of sundry snack-related thefts.
Seriously, what about this strikes you as remotely worthy of discussion?
I took out the Rakdos Carnarium and Dimir Aqueduct, and replaced them with two Pyroclasm. Should I replace all the Unsummon with Smother? I have a few Doomblade, but I felt that they'd be more of a sideboard card because of the nonblack aspect.
Update: I bought 4 Dimir Guildmages, 3 Drudge Skeletons, and 2 more Duress, because I can't afford The Rack or Hymns. Got rid of the grixis panoramas as well.
Seems like an interesting Standard deck. But for Legacy, discard alone isn't good enough. Some of the best Legacy decks would actually be helped by a Blightning to the face.
You should look into Pox builds. They combine global discard, creature removal, and land destruction with powerful recursion. Judging by what you posted, it seems to be your preferred style of play.
If you really want to stick with the deck framework you have, I would make a couple of changes:
- As Cecilia said, Nyxathid seems good here. I would run 2-3.
- Hymn to Tourach is an auto 4-of.
- Badlands would help fix the mana base.
- Sign in Blood is rather weak as a draw spell. I think that a way to recur what you discard would be better. Maybe Crucible of Worlds. Then add some mutual land sacrifice like Pox...
- Sinkhole is strong in this sort of deck. You make sure that the only cards in opponents' hands are ones that they don't have the mana for.
- Drudge Skeletons? Why?
- Damnation seems better than Pyroclasm.
- Quest for the Nihil Stone is not good. There are many better options, such as The Rack.
You might not want to sell your Abyssal Persecutor. It can be good in certain Pox decks.
In case you didn't know, the thread for Pox is in Legacy's Proven Competitive thread.
Just got back from the store, and sold only a handful of the cards posted. I kept the Abyssal Persecutors, which is a plus. I bought 2 Liliana Vess, 4 Dark Ritual, 4 The Rack, and 4 Hymn to Tourach, for a combined total of $18. Nyxathid was $2 each, and if I could have sold more of my cards, I would have gotten a set of them.
Didn't participate in the tourney itself but I played casually against FNM players in between rounds. Didn't get stomped too badly. I traded a Coat of Arms for a Pox, and bought 4 Hypnotic Specters. Simplified the deck.
