Maybe I was onto something thinking my Soldier white weenie had a shot in Legacy
I hadn't thought of an artifact lockdown element, but I can't say that's a bad idea. I already own playsets of Chalice and Chrome Mox, plus a couple Trinisphere, so I could do that cheap.
Thalia, Heretic Cathar sounds great to slow down stuff like Sneak and Show while still being useful by herself; Blind Obedience, Authority of the Consuls and Loxodon Gatekeeper don't do much else. In general I play only 2 or 3 of a legendary to avoid dead draws. I am aware that the legend rule only applies to cards with the exact same name and thus I could have Thalia, Guardian of Thraben on the battlefield at the same time.
The amount of options for Soldier cards is almost overwhelming IMHO.

This is in many ways a tempo deck. It's main plan is not to completely lock the opponent out of the game, but it wants to slow them down and disrupt while killing them.
Control is more important than cards that are purely designed for speed, for this type of deck. Fast proactive cards like Captain don't slow down your opponent, and so they can be tempo negative.

You can't be playing high cc soldier without Sol lands. You also need control in Legacy, you need Chalice and Suppression Field.

Firstly, you need minimum 8 accelerants, perhaps 9. 4 Tomb 4 Mox or 4 Tomb 3 Mox, 2 City etc.
The deck also needs Cavern of Souls, no question. It is not an Aether Vial deck and so 4 are essential.
On the other point, Preeminent needs an attack phase to implement. The deck would invariably cast Chalice or Sup field over Preeminent t1 on the play over preeminent, because Storm reanimator and combo all outpace ANY creature deck that does not disrupt. Legacy is not about dropping ten power t2, that is too late. Give me two power and disruption, followed by a bit more disruption and a bit more power. It is what the deck is about, it does not race, it joggs, but it ties the opponent's shoelaces together. You need disruption t1, t2 at the latest, but normally t1. I am happy to drop Chalice, Thalias etc. t1 as they dusrupt. Preeminent at best gets me a second dude t2, which is not enough. If it cost 1 then it would be better, but normally it hits t2 which is too late to disrupt, and without disruption you are not winning.

Yeah the accelerants and stax elements do seem key to this deck as is, but I had been wondering if something different would work.
There seems to be a lot of consensus on which soldiers to put in, but differences on some of them as well as what quantities. Here's what I'll try playtesting now. I'll consider springing for playsets of Tomb and Cavern, but City? Heck no.
Edit - played two matches against reanimator. first one I got blown out both games. second match I went 2-1, lost game 1 badly but was very strong after sideboarding.
Of course Rest in Peace hoses that deck, and 4-of helps find them or play another after Wear. Oblivion Ring and Heretic Cathar were useful if he did get something out. Aegis of the Gods was a deterrent to Collective Brutality or Cabal Therapy.
I sided out Suppression Field, would only have done good against his fetches and maybe Griselbrand. Also took out Warchief and Marshal, as pump doesn't matter much when he either goes off or doesn't.
Plains-Mox-any white card- either Chalice for 1 or Rest in Peace was key before he had a chance to get going.
I always say keep SF in vs both BR and UB reanimators, taking out the high end stuff for the matches. I have played it a fair chunk, as I own RB reanimator and I have a couple of mates who are a UB reanimator player and mono B respectively, we have jammed the match a few times for hours. SF is often irrelevant post t2, but so are most of the 4cc dudes, and unlike them a T1 SF is very likely to win a game.
Stopping GB's draw is key, esp if you run a Karakas (which are normally v good in the deck)- you can afford 2 to activate it once, they can't afford to draw the turn it comes in. A T1 SF on the play is lethal, they often have to accept fetch only hands and have to pop a petal to loot. Sometimes it is buying a turn or two that enables the drawing of RIP, which you only have a 40 pc chance of having with 4 copies.
BTW, why 4 o ring? Due to eching truth a split with BL is normal, surely, since Echoing Truth is played in the format and the cards are nearly functionally identical bar O ring can hit your stuff? Thalia is normally a maindeck card too, especially in any meta with Sneak and Show. Field Marshals used to be in early iterations of the deck, but to see so many combat winning cards and so few "screw your mana" cards is rare. If your meta is super hatebear and midrange heavy then I could understand it, but the Thalia is one of those "Stax" elements that work so well.

What is BL an abbreviation for? Now that you mention it, an O-Ring variant makes sense to avoid cardname shenanigans like Echoing Truth.
A Karakas wouldn't hurt. I see a lot of lists with 2, what's the rationale for that amount in particular? I tend to avoid running as many legendaries as possible, to avoid dead draws.
One problem with 4 Cavern of Souls is that it only produces white mana for Soldiers
played a blue Painter's Servant/Grindstone deck. 1st game I couldn't quite win before he combo'ed out. Sided out a lot of tutors but could've sided out pump as well. had a very good matchup post-sideboard. Aegis of the Gods totally shuts it down and Cavern of Souls gets around his counters. Non-Soldiers like Suppression Field are still vulnerable but I drew 3 and was able to get 1 out.
This is very close to the card I was hoping for (a creature version of Suppression Field), except it does even more, with the large downside of doing nothing on your opponent's turn. Perhaps this card can replace Preeminent Captain, but I can't see it taking the place of anything else.

This is my current list of U/W Humans with the added Lavinia, Azorios Renegade. Notably, most of the creatures are soldiers, but I still think I'd prefer not to play Enlistment Officer, since Meddling Mage is not a Soldier. This could be wrong.
I think Lavinia is great in Legacy. One issue with this deck might be the fact that I have so many redundant Legendary creatures, but I don't think it will be much of an issue, 7 more than Soldier Stompy.
I like this deck, because it's FULL-ON hate. Just hate and more hate, and I like stacking Thalia with Arbiter.
LEGACY: Soldier Stompy WW // Blue Stompy UU // Fit Variants BGRW // Sol Land Brews BGRUWC MODERN: Pure Pili-ness GU // Red Devotion RR // Green Devotion Variants GRWUG // U/G Emerge CGU // Lots and Lots of Brews BGRUWC
So just for funzies, I tried to make a W/X Human or Soldier Stompy deck for each of the colors. I already made my U/W Humans a while back, and recently upgraded it with Lavinia, Azorios Renegade. That list can be seen in the post above.
Obviously the downside of the dual color decks is that the mana can be a little trickier, but I haven't had much of an issue so far - though I haven't tested the decks much except for W/U Humans - and Wasteland is even better vs us.
I haven't tested this one at all, since this was the most recent list I made, and I didn't even touch on the sideboard yet, but this is a very disruptive list and if the mana isn't too much of an issue, could be one of the most competitive versions. The draw to play this list is that it has access to staples of traditional Red Stompy with SSG - for more consistent turn 1 Chalices - and Magus of the Moon. Also, it has access to Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder, a top tier 1v1 Commander and a very powerful Human. He smashes hard, and provides some nice lifegain, something traditional Soldier Stompy really wants in certain matchups.
-
I have trouble deciding on the build for this version. This is trying to be faster and smash harder than some of the other versions. Even though it's a Soldier deck, it's very possibly correct to have one or two Magus of the Moon, since it can easily be tutored for with Recruiter. The sideboard has not yet been tuned for the red splash, though I don't think many changes will be made once I investigate my option in red, since white has most of the best hate cards.
-
Additional Notes:
There are a few reason why I really like the Boros versions. Having SSG to more consistently land a turn 1 S-Field Thalia 2.0 and Magus of the Moon, means that out of all the dual colored decks, this one is the least vulnerable to Wasteland.
This version has some good hand disruption, and a lot of disruption is usually key to making a good Legacy deck. Tymna is amazing, providing card draw and lifegain. I think this version has some potential. The sideboard has not been tuned for the black splash.
-
This version is unique in that I have forgone Suppression Field in order to accommodate Captain Sisay, which is the main draws to a G/W version alongside Elvish Spirit Guide. In place of S-Fiend I have added Trinisphere. Sisay provides a nice tutor package. This sideboard has not been optimized for the green splash.
The Soldier version of G/W is using Preeminent Captain, and therefore I cut some non-Soldiers, most notably Heron's Grace Champion for some sweet Legendary Soldiers to cheat in and fetch with Ms. Sisay.
-
Well that's all for now, but I'm sure I will edit and update these lists in the near future, since I just built most of these within the last day or two, and haven't got much testing in. If you want to spice things up in Legacy, and love playing Soldiers, try out the decks. Comments and suggestions welcome.
LEGACY: Soldier Stompy WW // Blue Stompy UU // Fit Variants BGRW // Sol Land Brews BGRUWC MODERN: Pure Pili-ness GU // Red Devotion RR // Green Devotion Variants GRWUG // U/G Emerge CGU // Lots and Lots of Brews BGRUWC
Yea, that came up once so far, but I don't think it would be much of an issue. It could be relevant vs Omnitell and Bomberman and perhaps storm, but her first ability already wrecks Storm. It's only a nonbo when playing against 0 CC cards like Lotus Petal, LED, Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox and Chalice for 0. We don't have to worry about it affecting Force of Will, because her first ability already makes Force uncastable most of the time. Stopping the best card in the format is no joke.

So tommorow we're doing locally some small Legacy proxy tournament and, as I love White Weenie decks, I decided to play Soldier Stompy. I don't have any experience with the deck so I figured I'd use some help with deckbuilding and advices regarding gameplay. Here's my list right now:
His first ability is a bit awkward in a Chalice deck, but we can get 0 CMC creatures. usually the best one would be Ballista but we are playing SFied. Now a new 0 cmc creature was printed though, Ugin's Conjurant, but not sure it's good enough.

There are a few reason why I really like the Boros versions. Having SSG to more consistently land a turn 1 S-Field Thalia 2.0 and Magus of the Moon, means that out of all the dual colored decks, this one is the least vulnerable to Wasteland.
B/W Humans
// 9 Artifact
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
1 Trinisphere
// 28 Creature
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
2 Recruiter of the Guard
4 Palace Jailer
1 Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon"
4 Tymna the Weaver
4 Sin Collector
4 Kitesail Freebooter
1 Sanctum Prelate
4 Suppression Field
// 19 Land
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Scrubland
4 Concealed Courtyard
2 Damping Matrix
1 Sorcerous Spyglass
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Containment Priest
1 Sanctum Prelate
1 Leonin Relic-Warder
2 Faerie Macabre
1 Rest in Peace
1 Gideon's Intervention
2 Holy Light
2 Council's Judgment
This version has some good hand disruption, and a lot of disruption is usually key to making a good Legacy deck. Tymna is amazing, providing card draw and lifegain. I think this version has some potential. The sideboard has not been tuned for the black splash.

G/W Humans
// 11 Artifact
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Chrome Mox
4 Trinisphere
// 30 Creature
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
2 Recruiter of the Guard
4 Palace Jailer
4 Captain Sisay
4 Elvish Spirit Guide
1 Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon"
4 Heron's Grace Champion
1 Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa
1 Baird, Steward of Argive
1 Hokori, Dust Drinker
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Savannah
4 Razorverge Thicket
2 Damping Matrix

1 Containment Priest
1 Sanctum Prelate
1 Leonin Relic-Warder
2 Faerie Macabre
1 Rest in Peace
1 Gideon's Intervention
2 Holy Light
2 Council's Judgment
This version is unique in that I have forgone Suppression Field in order to accommodate Captain Sisay, which is the main draws to a G/W version alongside Elvish Spirit Guide. In place of S-Fiend I have added Trinisphere. Sisay provides a nice tutor package. This sideboard has not been optimized for the green splash.
G/W Soldier
// 11 Artifact
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Chrome Mox
4 Trinisphere
// 30 Creature
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
2 Recruiter of the Guard
4 Palace Jailer
4 Captain Sisay
4 Elvish Spirit Guide
1 Hokori, Dust Drinker
4 Preeminent Captain
1 Commander Eesha
1 Odric, Master Tactician
1 Daru Warchief
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Savannah
4 Razorverge Thicket
2 Damping Matrix
1 Sorcerous Spyglass
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Containment Priest
1 Sanctum Prelate
1 Leonin Relic-Warder
2 Faerie Macabre
1 Rest in Peace
1 Gideon's Intervention
2 Holy Light
2 Council's Judgment
The Soldier version of G/W is using Preeminent Captain, and therefore I cut some non-Soldiers, most notably Heron's Grace Champion for some sweet Legendary Soldiers to cheat in and fetch with Ms. Sisay.

Well that's all for now, but I'm sure I will edit and update these lists in the near future, since I just built most of these within the last day or two, and haven't got much testing in. If you want to spice things up in Legacy, and love playing Soldiers, try out the decks. Comments and suggestions welcome.

I wanna try to play 3-4 of her but just CoS probably isn't going to cut it for the blue to cast her, I think.
Her home is probably some D N T style list with vial, or humans style list with vial. We need Moxen and sol lands, and so UW is a big, big ask.
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Cavern of Souls
3 City of Traitors
2 Karakas
7 Plains
4 Chrome Mox
Creatures
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
3 Militia Bugler
2 Recruiter of the Guard
4 Enlistment Officer
4 Preeminent Captain
3 Palace Jailer
2 Daru Warchief

Is that proper list or is there something to upgrade? All advices are highly appreciated.
His second ability is great vs. combo!
His first ability is a bit awkward in a Chalice deck, but we can get 0 CMC creatures. usually the best one would be Ballista but we are playing SFied. Now a new 0 cmc creature was printed though, Ugin's Conjurant, but not sure it's good enough.

If there’s anyone still playing Soldier Stompy, it just got a potentially great new addition. I think this card could potentially replace Preeminent Captain.
