It seems people are trying to overcomplicate the list a little bit. Adding a color makes this deck significantly weaker because the strongest point of this deck is that it doesn't flop over to wasteland. Also staying with one color allows for Back to basics to be thrown in the post board which bends over anything running 3 colors.
This is the list I use and I have used it to great success in testing in my groups gauntlet.
You can continue to fiddle around with splash colors and I have also tried but it pokes the deck full of weaknesses and detracts from the main purpose of setting up a soft lock and beating them down.
Solid List I do concur it weaken the deck to wasteland, and it would be easier for me to grab a playset of back to the basics verses getting the dual lands needed to make this deck flow smoother.

Things with pro-blue like Scryb Ranger or anything equipped with Sword of Fire and Ice will be the bane of your existence. The other issues I've run into with mono blue are resolved threats. If they land anything you don't want on the board chances are it will sit there all game. There's strengths and weaknesses to every list, but in the end it's your piloting and luck of the draw that will decide things.
I'm still unsure over Baleful Strix in Ninjas. It looks deceptively good (alright it's a good card ) but somehow due to its non-synergy with Spellstutter Sprite and it's 2 CMC, it's really hard to call for it's automatic inclusion. IDK, but more testing has to be done IMO - has anyone tested on Baleful Strix intensively?
To me Baleful Strix is a sore thumb to who ever I'm playing; they always wants to target him because he is such a great defender. wasting one of their spell on the owl vs notdh, SSS, or the new student. The only negative part about this owl is unable to absorb much damage with creature with trample, other than it is black, and an artifact protecting the owl from a small amount of removal out there. Another reason i run him is because he is some what of a kill spell, for creatures I was not able to counter, saving my fairies that are in play making SSS more of a threat.

It's why Jitte and Shackles are mainboard. Mutavault can also defend against those.
If you're really running Engineered Plague as a sideboard option then I find that your area's meta is really behind. Black makes it clunkier and only gives you some sideboard options over losing stability. I've tested both and mirror matched them and Mono U wins most of the time.
Im thinking that Signal Pest will be replaced with Judge's Familiar.
Wastelands aren't such a big deal.. they're 4x, and the list is just splashed. Since they never are dead cards against fns (remember that mutavaults are necessary for standstills), adding a color in order to improve bad match-ups isn't a bad idea. Anyway, you could always put fetchlands and a couple of basic lands for this kind of problems. Loam decks aren't problematic because black allows Extirpate in side, that is resolutive against it and a lot of other decks.
Main problem of monoU FNS is that there are too many weak cards, like Mistblade Shinobi, Signal Pest, Ornithopter and Zephyr Sprite. Adding a splash means that you can cut them off for other choices blue doesn't have. Bitterblossom, for example, is a really great card that fills the battlefield with creatures and, at the same time, have a fantastic sinergy with standstills and spellstutter sprites. If one of the main purposes of the deck is to softly lock the opponent, Bitterblossom is one of the best choices possibles for this deck.
Back to basics isn't such a good card. It isn't resolutive, has an expensive cc and can be countered/destroyed easily (remember that the few 3 colored decks in the meta usually play blue and green.. and the same decks usually plays 1cc/2cc cards like delver of tarmogoyf.. btb doesn't stop them.. Maybe something like a blue blood moon would have been stronger!)
I'm going to hope that Mistblade shinobi being weak is a joke. I would put it as the strongest of all three ninjas run. As for Ornithopter and Zephyr Sprite, I don't run either and I only keep Signal Pest in as a need for a one drop and it will be replace by Judge's Familiar as of that release. The legacy meta in my area is riddled with 3 color decks and other non-basic heavy decks, as most metas seem to be at this moment and back to basics is an absolute champion. If I can lock down theyre mana into them relying on dropping a couple lands to resolve their goyfs/delvers then its all fine since they'll either get countered or shinobi'd back to their hands.
What about the new faerie imposter? Flash it with vial saving a dude, bounce a ninja then ninja her ad nauseam, bounce spellstutter for more counters, AND she's a faerie to boot! Good, bad?

My first thought: Run more Ornithopter. Otherwise, card looks very solid. Might also push me to testing AEther Vial.

Anyone? Counterspell or Familiar's Ruse, or both combined? Why?
Try them both 2 and 2 and see which one you like the most. I think 2 and 2 are good until your able to get those FOW, me I was able to trade JTMS for a FOW and did a trade plus cash deal. I only own two that is why i splashed black on, cause i had a play set of Baleful Strix so that could take care for the most part what i could not counter. my Decklist is on my 1st post. I don't know but i might get blast for this but when I wasn't able to afford any FOW i use to run Disrupting Shoal for a long while and it was working pretty well for me because of the low CMC of our deck and plus ninja of the deep hour for board clearer. But from my readings alot of people dont really like it, and that is cause of, Force of will.
Edit: was able to trade for 2nd jitte today, added to the list.
Was able to get a playset of FoW so added them. After RtR, pests will be judge's familiar, but not sure if 4x is too much. Also jitte was added since i had one, and i might add a second one if i can trade for it. I just does what this deck can't do: kill annoying stuff like mom and gain life for harpy and blossoms.
Reduced harpy to 2 because having multiple is not that good, but i'm determined to keep them in the deck. They just do soooo many awesome things you have to try them to believe it.
Also, bitterblossoms are up to 4x. I always want one especially now that i have FoW to back them up. They are excellent in my metagame.
A card i'm unsure of is faerie conclave. They've been useful but most of the time they just die to wasteland. Also the etb tapped is annoying sometimes.
I would not recommend Faerie conclave, in fact they were the first card i ever cut from my fns deck. And aether vial was the second.
I would much rather have a tight group of creatures (around 20) with a good clock, Brainstorm/Fow/Pierce/Daze/Discard than that large group of creatures /Aether vial that you have. Also standstills. A single creature or Bitterblossom, a Jitte, a Standstill, and a hand full of counterspells, that's where I always wanted to be with this deck.

Thing is, i've encountered many aether vial + cavern of souls decks. Counters don't do much against them aside from countering removal. I can always FoW vial but that's kind of clunky. Also, i don't have wastelands so cavern can be a problem. Mistblade shinobi and baleful strix both help deal with resolved threats and that's why I x4 them. Also, newly added umezawa's jitte and upcoming second jitte will also help. Discard might be good against some matchups, i'll likely include 4 duress in my sb against stoneforge mystic.
So the next step is get myself a set of wastelands which will remplace conclave and a second jitte which will take one signal pest's spot.
Edit: on a side note i found a nice little tech against sneak and show. If they show and tell and you don't have a counter, let it resolve and put baleful strix onto the battlefield. On your turn, swing with strix. They'll likely not block it because of deathtouch. Then, ninjutsu mistblade shinobi and bounce their threat! This doesn't work with omniscience though, so you have to be careful.

Or try to trade for another Force actually I think that what I'm going to do I want to keep it along the lines of FNS but Gilded Drake is a good card tho, it makes me want to take it for the mono-blue route but for now blue/black
Hello, I've recently made the switch from modern ninja to legacy ninja and I've been reading this thread as much as I can and Ive come up with a list and some questions I have about the list I've chosen. I have some legacy tournaments coming up that I would very much so like to try this deck at.
First, my current list. Forgive me, I currently have no FoW. Not only due to lack of funds but also unavailability at my local store. This also applies to Mutavault, so I chose Inkmoth instead for its evasion.
The deck is kinda everywhere but I'll try and explain.
I LOVE Mistbind Clique. Its function has won me so many games and combine it with Back to Basics, I've won games easily with this combo vs zoo or anything that uses a lot of non-basic lands.
Its quite entertaining to play her than bounce her with a shinobi to put one of my opponents creatures in his hand than replaying her and taking away their ability to replay the creature.
Also, putting her on a Cloud of Faeries and then bouncing her with a shinobi or even NotDH means CoF comes back into play untapping the mana I just used to bounce her which means I can repeat this process with only 4 mana.
If she hits the board Its usually a guaranteed win. I run 3 of her only because I want to avoid pulling her turn 1 if I can, honestly due to the fact that I feel this deck needs an optimal first draw to be successful as stated by a few others who have posted previously.
My First question is, should I run 2-3 Writ of Passage? I really like this card and I feel like I can make room for them easily.
Second, I do realize the importance of Mutavault here but I wont be able to get a playset for some time. Which means I feel as though I need another faerie in this deck besides SSS and CoF. Would Vendilion Clique be a better choice for this deck as a 2 drop or maybe 3? Ive never been too sold on this card. Its 3 cmc makes me cringe for one and Ive always wondered if, for situational reasons, would it be possible or smart to target yourself with Vendilion? (sorry if this is a dumb question)
Bitterblossum was an option for me but I decided to keep shackles and stay Mono U.
In modern my list was composed of a lot more counters. All being mostly 2 cmc drops. But in legacy they just don't seem to be strong enough. Would Spell Snare be a smarter play? over pierce and or daze?
Also, I was thinking of taking out all of the 1 cmc cards and just running 3-4 Chalice of the void and playing it for 0 and 1. I haven't been able to play test but I have been using chalice and it works wonders against goblins and zoo. Playing it for 1 against a Show and tell deck was also quite amusing as it slowed it down considerably due to their reliance on ponder and brainstorm. It also gets rid of Aether Vial.
My next question is about Sakashima's Student. In some games hes been a house for me. His 2 ninjutsu costs works great with my mistbind and he can get rid of legendary creatures. Hes worked wonders for me against show and tell. But, some games It makes me shutter when I see him in my hand. Has anyone play tested him a little more? Is there anything a little more consistent? I feel he's definitely earned a spot in this deck regardless of being in the main or sideboard.
My sideboard seems standard to me but I'm sure could be improved. I have the 3 curfew in there because of my local meta and the amount of people who play show and tell or sneak and show... So many people that I'm quite sick of playing against it to be honest.
Sakashima's student sadly does nothing against show and tell. His ability triggers "as" he enters the battlefield as opposed to "when". This means it triggers before any creatures are put onto the battlefield with show and tell. I used to think this worked but i verified the ruling and it doesn't. He's still good though.
oh i dont play it as a show and tell option for myself. I usually play something like shackles in for free. Putting him in through ninjutsu still works though. Ive also used Sunken Hope against show and tell.. very funny.

It works against the non-omniscience version. Against those decks, my trick is to cheat baleful strix in. Then on my turn, i swing with it. They'll likely not block so i can ninjustu mistblade shinobi and bounce emrakul/griselbrand. Doesn't work against progenitus though.
If they drop omniscience they can win with Emmy hardcasted or burning wish combo. Against those versions, i use riftwing cloudskate from my sideboard to bounce omniscience before they can cast anything non-instant speed (burning wish or a fatty). I can then ninjustu cloudskate and repeat this.
