I see. I was thinking that was probably the case in both instances. Thanks for the further explanation.
You can combo out without Anger but it can and does fizzle from time to time leaving you wide open with only 7 life. Anger helps prevent this from happening. Remember though, a lot of builds don't run it at all. If you can't kill that turn your plan is to animate either Iona or Sire off of the cards you've drawn. Both offer a bit of protection with their abilities allowing you to smash face over the next couple turns.
I'll have to start with one or two Entomb and just build up to a playset then.
I actually get a lot of my cards trading online. There are several online trading websites to help save you some dough. The LEDs and Badlands can set you back dollar wise but if you already have them you are good.
Hey I'm just starting out with this deck. I was just wondering if someone would be willing to write a sideboard guide for this against some of the more common decks (miracles, delver, stoneblade, shardless, etc), it would really help the transitioning process better.
I won't steal Laser Brains' thunder here, seeing as he's put the most work into writing about the deck on this thread, but sideboarding is pretty easy when half your cards are just Burning Wish targets anyways.
Things like Pyroclasm and Revoke Existence stay in the sideboard and are tutored for when you really need them. Other than that it depends on what you have in the sideboard that is not a wish target. I personally will have some number of Pithing Needle to use against activated grave hate.
Yep, what Eretoryi said. Pithing Needle is an excellent choice against grave hate. I'm trying to squeeze three into my sideboard. Also Chancellor of the Annex against anything combo and anything blue. So far the big question is choosing what to side out.
I am working on adding match up analysis as I run the deck through the gauntlet. There is a thread on mtgthesource.com that has been around for about a year now and there are several deck lists and some match up analysis there. It has a lot of valuable information, I recommend checking it out. Here is the link.
Hey guys! I just took first place, 6 and 2 at a tournament in Coeur D' Alene Idaho with the following list. First match was against Eldrazi Aggro. Turn one Sire of Insanity first game. Opponent (can't remember his name, good player though) scooped. Second game I got hated out with Leyline of Void but had a hand that allowed me to combo out with Empty the Warrens, sadly he countered it with Warping Wail. Third match, I can't totally remember but it was short. Next opponent was playing Food Griffin, again with a turn one Sire of Insanity. He scooped. Second game was intense. Opponent got out early Deathrite Shaman and kept exiling my graveyard creatures. I managed to get out a Chancellor of the Annex and really did some damage but my opponent (Dan) got out a Baleful Strix. He then comboed out. Third game was also intense but I ended up comboing out with both Griselbrand and Iona for the finish. Third and final opponent was playing a really really good home brew called Turbo Discard. Sadly for him the weakness of his deck was Reanimator. I took both games easily turn one and then turn two. I'm really impressed with how well this list performed. I don't think I would change a thing looking back on it. Here it is:
Nice list! Going to start putting together a similar list since my LGS is starting to do Legacy this Fall. I'm out right now but I'll post the list I'm looking to build a little later.
Bringing this thread back. Particularly because it was created considerably before the giant flux in Black Red Reanimator lists last fall. I say Black Red Reanimator instead of BR Reanimator because both Burning Reanimator and Black Red Reanimator have the same initials "BR". So to dissolve some confusion I will refer to both without abbreviations. Prior to Black Red Reanimator Blue Black lists dominated, and only because I believe players have a knack for net decking top 8 lists and not brewing. Now that Black Red Reanimator has finally made its splash I feel it is the perfect time to revive this archetype, Burning Reanimator. That being said I am aware that Reanimator in general is on the decline and this is due to the amount of grave hate players have been packing to battle it's recent surge. This is evident in the fact that grave hate Surgical Extraction has jumped from $7 to $16 since October.
While not a popular deck, Burning Reanimator has many advantages over Black Red Reanimator. I'm hoping that it's heftier price tag hasn't been the reason that it didn't catch on. Burning Reanimator has several advantages over Black Red Reanimator. One of those advantages is that it can and often does combo out Belcher style with a turn one Empty the Warrens army of goblins. This is really nice game two when your opponent sides in grave hate. Being less linear, it is more challenging to pilot but you have a considerably larger amount of options and flexability with the Burning Wish toolbox.
The list I'm playing right now (listed above) only has one change and that is -1 Griselbrand +1 Sire of Insanity. This build is extremely tuned, I only made the change since I feel Sire is equally (if not more important) than Griselbrand to have in your opening hand. The deck consistently goes off turn one and because of it's flexability it probably takes my number one spot as all time favorite combo deck to pilot. I took first place with it last summer beating Miracles, Eldrazi, Food Griffin and Deadguy Ale. Hoping to take it to another large tournament soon. Thoughts?
LEGACY: Soldier Stompy WW // Blue Stompy UU // Fit Variants BGRW // Sol Land Brews BGRUWC MODERN: Pure Pili-ness GU // Red Devotion RR // Green Devotion Variants GRWUG // U/G Emerge CGU // Lots and Lots of Brews BGRUWC
I was trying not to be redundant and posting my list too many times. In the third paragraph of my last post I mentioned: "The list I'm playing right now (listed above)", I should have said "the post above is my current list but with the -1x Griselbrand +1x Sire". Sorry for the confusion. Speaking of which and to clear any confusion here's the list:
Looking at recent Black Red Reanimator lists I've seen new tech such as Collective Brutality. I've toyed with it and really it doesn't make the cut. This deck wins turn one more often than not and CB with it's casting cost regarding it's options is not necessary. Although, it could and possibly should be on the sb as a BW target. Also, Black Red Reanimator doesn't go off as consistently. With Burning Reanimator you get the basic Black Red (Faithless Looting / Entomb) package plus you get LED which dumps fatties to yard only to be reanimated with Unburial Rites, and you get the Exhume + LED combo. With Black Red you only get the basic Faithles Looting / Entomb package. That being said you get better chances of going off early. Burning Reanimator (at least my list) goes off with the consistency of Belcher but better because you at least get some disruption. 4x maindeck Thoughtseize game one and an additional 3x Chancellor game two, putting you at 7 disruption. If you are on the play you almost always win game one. Game two you will almost always side in Chancellor and either win with his protection or Belcher out goblins to avoid grave hate. Not to mention Tin Fins style storm wins and a Burning Wish toolbox.
EDIT: I'm thinking +1x Collective Brutality for the sb -1x Pithing Needle. I've made the adjustments to the deck in this edit.
I'm really surprised more people haven't tried this deck out. I've transitioned to it after running B/r Reanimator for a while and really love it. It is faster than the traditional build and the wish board tends to give it better resilience G2/3 (in my opinion).
I've gone towards running Tidespout main and Sire in the board, but that's a meta call.
Virus9, thanks for replying to this thread. I thought everyone forgot about this deck, this thread's been dormant for over a year now. For a long time I've tried to figure out why nobody plays this deck, it is hands down the most fun and best Legacy deck I own. I've come to the conclusion that players in general typically go straight to MTGtop8.com to see what decks are winning and create variants of those decks. This deck did get a little attention back in the day however that attention was diverted to Black Red Reanimator and my guess was for reasons of budget. Those whom own a set of LEDs will typically gravitate toward the old tried and true Storm variants (ANT / TES) rather than invest time and effort in a deck they feel lightly tested. However, that still doesn't change the fact that this deck is faster, more consistent and versatile than any of the previously mentioned decks. In fact I own every card to build both Black Red Reanimator and TES but am unwilling take this deck apart to build them.
It's interesting because at first glance the deck looks really good. Like really really good, but after you actually play it you start to notice synergies that you didn't initially see and it begins to become clear that this deck is a stable, resilient, blazing fast, versatile Tier 1 monster.
Virus9, I like your build btw. I think however you may find that you need your 4th Thoughtseize. Not just for disruption purposes but because often you will need to use it on yourself as a discard outlet for Griselbrand. I'd recommend cutting one of either Children of Korlis or Anger. Honestly I prefer running Anger as once Griselbrand is online and you draw 14 you WILL most likely come across an Entomb in which to tutor him up allowing you a hasted Grisel and thus another 7 free cards in which to combo out. I think you will find that only one of them (either CoK or Anger) is necessary though. The deck needs a tad bit more disruption than what you have going on. In fact I now run 2x Chancellor and 4x Thoughtsieze main which brings me up to 6x maindeck disruption. Love your build other than that though. How has testing been going for you? I'd love your feedback.
Laser Brains, are you still playing this deck? With the switch to using Twitch logins, I never got the notification that you had replied and I assumed this thread was dead. I'm really glad someone else is still enjoying the deck. I played in a decent sized tourney a few months ago and have made some modifications after that to give the deck a little extra ooomf. Here is my current iteration:
The biggest change up is the addition of Conflagorate. I first tried it in the wish-board, but it was clunky to wish for it then try to discard it. In the mainboard it is an alternate win-con that can come out of nowhere and builds a little more consistency in a big-turn win (which can be done turn 1 or turn 2).
I've also switched out some cards in the sideboard to allow for Magus or Lavamancer to come down and beat opponents who are weak to them after they board in their graveyard hate. I've had some decent success with these in some matchups.

Hi there,
I piloted this deck during the brisbane legacy championship and managed a top8 (63 players), it was unexpected since i didn’t updated my list since 2017, I kind of played this deck as a joke but it prouved to be quite a solid deck so I would definitely try it again with some change in the 75 for my next event.
Hi everyone, I was a simply br reanimator player before I found this discussion, and I felt in love with the burning variant!
I've tested a bit, and my point is that we need both unmask and thoughtseize maindeck, and chancellor as well. The deck is very consinstent now and, with a good hand, can play through any counterspell or hate in G2 and G3. I personally prefer the green splash for the sideboard, I also put a taiga against leyline (burning wish/gamble for reverent silence), even if the scrubland is necessary sometimes for the unburial rites. Here is my list, I would appreciate any advice if anyone is still playing the deck.
Does anyone still watch this thread? I have played this deck a ton and it's amazing. I'm going to be playing a league or two tonight with my version. Testing out a couple things possibly. If anyone is interested in watching. I'll go live in about an hour (8:30ish central time) Twitch: mtgogdan
So.....was running this for a while tonight. It was a total train wreck. Far too much GY hate now. The last time I played this deck frequently was back when deathrite shaman was legal. Which of course wasn't good for me, but because of DRS, gy hate was very scarce. So it turned out fine overall. I saw games 2-3 leylines in six games I think. A few containment priests. It was rough. Just thought I would report in lol.
