Yeesh, WotC, why have two back-to-back releases whose official shorthand is one letter different?
Anyway,
Puddle Jumper brought up a good point in the EMA Cancellation thread that you all may be 'burned out' with 8-Ways.
I was checking who would be interested in doing a Duplicate Draft rather than an 8-Way for a while.
For people who do not know what these are, and/or their differences:
8-Way Drafts:
8-Way Drafts have been done here in the Limited subforum of MTGSalvation for at least 5 years, and likely far longer than that. They take the following form:
1) People sign up and are assigned using some rubric to one of 8 teams--traditionally named Teams A-H.
2) A moderator (which has been, in the past, myself, Sene, Hardened (I believe), as well as several others) has information on a complete draft 'set'.
3) Once per day, the moderator releases to each team their pack.
4) Over that day, the team discusses which card to pick, and votes.
5) Majority vote wins, and the team then selects that card.
6) Lather/rinse/repeat 3-5 for the first ten picks of each pack.
7) For picks 11-14 in each pack, the tradition has been to have the moderator autopick them with input from the teams. This speeds the draft up by 33%.
8) At times, attempts have been made to play games after the draft completes, and this has been more or less successful depending on circumstances.
Duplicate Drafts
These have been rarer than 8-Ways, because the administrative work is a bit more. They work as follows:
1) The moderator (and, I will note, that while I am willing to run these in future, I have never run one in the past) has information on a single 24-pack 'draft set' for a given draft environment.
2) People sign up, and are assigned individual positions in a pod.
3) Multiple pods can (and almost always do) occur.
4) Each pod receives the exact same 'draft set'.
5) Daily activity works nearly the same as in 8-Ways, except with one person, there is no voting barring very rare and never-before-encountered situations.
6) Autopicks are typically not performed in Duplicate Drafts, though they certainly could be.
6) Playing games afterwards can theoretically be done, but this would be more difficult than in 8-Ways.
Comparing the two, there are some clear Pro/Cons.
You are a member of a team in an 8-Way, while you are an individual in Duplicate. This is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, you can be overruled over what you think the pick should be on a team. OTOH, the team can theoretically operate without you for a day or two, if you have sporadic Internet access. The advantage of Duplicate Drafting is that you have complete control over picks in the draft. Of course, it requires a larger individual commitment generally.
Having said all that, please reply if you are interested in participating in a Duplicate Draft, and whether you could play games from the draft on MTGO or on Cockatrice. (Please indicate each separately.)
I'm interested and would try to play games, but can't guarantee it.
That said, maybe it's time for a break for the summer or something? People are likely to be on vacation over the next several weeks anyway, which would make time limits on picks awkward. Might be cool to do a duplicate draft when the new Conspiracy set comes out.
I'd be interested in a EMN duplicate draft. I'd be able to play on Cockatrice, could play on MTGO but would prefer not to unless my deck is relatively cheap.
