So I'm basically a newb at magic. What's the general rule if I have a mono-colored deck and I want to splash one or two cards of a different color? How many land of that other color do I need? I know that you're supposed to stay away from cards that cost double of that color, but what are the other rules? this is for a limited game, so 40 card deck, 17 lands.
oh yeah and if I have mana fixers then do I need as many land of the other color? Like if I'm playing a mono-green but I want to splash a single red card, and I have Verdant Haven or Darksteel Ingot, how many mountains should I have in my deck?
Your minimum number of sources or a splash is 3. That will give you a better than 2/3 change of having one of them by T5.
However, if you are running a completely mono-coloured deck, then running a manabase of 14 swamps and 3 Islands might be overkill. I'd probably bias the mana up to 4 or even 5 islands then, as long as I don't have too many 'swamps matters' cards like Quag Sickness and Corrupt.
