I'm playing in the Magic Celebration on Sept 7th. Basically we're going to be given an M14 booster pack. We pick a color and then we get an M14 sample deck and we build our deck from that.
So I'm thinking of basing my strategy around looking at which decks I would want to play first, and then making my final decision based on what I end up getting in my booster.
So my first question is, which sample decks do you think are the best and which are the worst?
That roughly mirrors the power of the colours in general, although I promoted both black and white a slot because they had quality removal and a 4 power flyer.
just to clarify, there are no extra prizes for winning, right? at my own LGS, my understanding is that you get a booster for entering, and then another booster at the end of the 6-person tournament for playing all the rounds.

Raging Goblin He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.

Black is better than Green? A lot of the cards in the Black deck don't look that impressive like Nightwing Shade and Vampire Warlord...
Flying shades can be great finishers... Nightwing's biggest problem is that it dies to Shock.

Try ranking the cards in the black and green lists from most to least powerful, and then ask yourself whether the black or the green card is better than it's opposing counterpart.
In a mono coloured deck, I like blacks cards across the board more than those of green.
I like black the best with some leanings to red. Removal will be key as bombs can easily out class the deck. Blue is crap shoot as it has evasion, but low removal and smallish critters.
Is this a trick question? Play some creatures, then peck away with flyers and use open mana to disrupt/delay the opponent so that you cross the finish line first.
Here's the list of the sample decks:

Black actually has removal spells which is why he's rating it so highly. I'm not really sure how that green deck beats a deck with any removal in it.

1 Sengir Vampire
2 Quag Sickness
1 Corrupt
1 Assassin's Strike
1 Nightwing Shade
1 Deathgaze Cockatrice
1 Kalonian Tusker
1 Rumbling Baloth
1 Rootwalla
1 Hunt the Weak
1 Giant Spider
2 Elvish Mystic
Yup. A single hunt the weak isn't going to set the world on fire.
Are there any cards that you can add to the green deck to make it survive against the black deck?
How do you play the blue deck?
Ranger's Guile leaps to mind. And Trollhide.
