Thalia is as good against Storm as Thorn of Amethyst. If your opponent has an active Pyromancer Ascension, Team Thalia is screwed, as the opponent will gladly pay three mana to net six mana with a Pyretic Ritual and everything will go downhill from there.
Ethersworn Canonist is near godly against Storm, on the other hand, as your opponent is down to one measly cantrip a turn with her out (maybe a double cantrip with an active Ascension) and basically cannot combo off until s/he gets bounce/burn/board sweeps.

This is true, but as long as Echoing Truth remains the anti-hate card of choice there's an advantage to diversifying. 1 Truth deals with 2 Canonists but not a Canonist and a Thalia.
I suppose one thing Thalia has over Canonist is that she can be found with Time of Need, for those who play that Bant variant. Now all we need is a legendary graveyard hate bear and we'll be golden!
(Granted, the Bant decks that emulate the Legacy version are probably the best--those are the ones that use mana dorks instead of the banned Green Sun's Zenith into Dryad Arbor.)
Thinking about this mechanic. With Cauldron haze, Viscera Seer and Bitter Ordeal, it could be interesting. Since you can fetch out things with Seer by just scrying and cycling through the deck it might work.
Anyone have any ideas of making this competitive? I know it's a bit of a stretch but I wanna see some cool ideas maybe?
I posted this in Legacy and realized it might be better in Modern. So I posted it here too. If you have ideas for Legacy, post 'em there.
Aggro decks that can pay GG on turn 2 are gonna benefit a lot with strangleroot geist. People haven't realized yet how good that guy is. But it won't see half as much play as it would if he'd cost 1G.
And I thought Gather the Townsfolk (Raise the Alarms 5-8) and Thraben Doomsayer (cheaper Bloodline Keeper must be good) were going to be good in BW Tokens...
Still don't think Ethersworn Canonist is disruptive enough to keep a slot in Modern Township Tokens; am thinking of replacing it with Thraben Doomsayer or something with 3 cmc or less.
Flayer of the Hatebound will be a thorn in the side of all players who forgot their counterspells, targeted discard, Path to Exiles, Oblivion Rings, Bant Charms, and Karn Liberateds at home. Kill it with targeted removal, sac effects, a board wipe, attacking into it, or getting it blocked, and it comes back and kills your best guy, whacks you in the noggin, or smites your planeswalker? Ouch. Too bad it's 6 cmc and its 4/2 body sort of sucks, but at least it's splashable, and it interacts with Persist (Murderous Redcap and Kitchen Finks will like this guy). (Hunch--probably about as good as Havengul Lich.)
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed looks absolutely dirty in a Tooth and Nail combo with Triskelion--get Trisk to shoot itself twice, then shoot the opponent twice (the first time, get it to shoot the opponent twice, then shoot itself). It comes back as a 2/2 with 4 +1/+1 counters on it. Repeat until your opponent dies or boots Mikaeus the Dead in response to the Undying trigger. Being a lord of the very nearly everything is also great, but shame about that restrictive mana cost (and 6 cmc) and the fact he won't bring back tokens. (At least a deck with Tooth and Nail probably has a few Sakura-Tribe Elders, and Through the Breach looks downright nutty with him out, so Mikaeus the Dead has use outside the combo.)

"Once you let go of your morals, everything becomes funny."
Instant death--just add Mortarpod. The new "BW" land should be nice for tokens (or maybe even Deadguy Ale/Team Italia/Team Esper/Junk/etc.). It still sort of blows against combo, unlike Gavony Township, but it should really raise the aggro match-ups.
New cards, and I see a lot of little role players:
Hellrider looks like it can push some damage through fast. Too bad the decks that most like pushing damage through, Zoo and Shamans, may not like him--Zoo because he's got a body as efficient as and the same cmc as Bloodbraid Elf with no chance of "making a Goyf token" and Shamans because he's not a Shaman.
Grafdigger's Cage is going to be funny, and is awesome sideboard hate for Tezzerator. Finally, Trinket Mage can search for a tiny card that's Melira Pod hate, Twin Pod hate, Storm hate, Tiago hate, Kitchen Finks hate, Teachings hate, Esper Reanimator Gifts hate, Loam hate (well, the Retrace cards that come with it), Martyr Proc hate, UW Sun Titan Control hate, and Polymorph hate all at once! (If Undying creatures are Modern-playable, this card will hose them, too. It's awesome.) As this card basically axes both Pod Combo and Storm (Pod decks have an especially tough time fighting through this, as they now have to draw into Harmonic Sliver/Qasali Pridemage/Acidic Slime/Vithian Renegades by luck--Twin Pod has an easier time ignoring it, though, as it doesn't require endless Persist dudes to combo off), I think this is a solid sideboard choice. (Okay, Storm can fight through it with the Empty the Warrens plan or an active Ascension. Still a solid, flexible sideboard choice.)
Warden of the Wall needs to be playable. It's great defense. It taps for mana on your turn and requires no mana investment to be a defensive dude. Too bad it ETB tapped and has a cmc of 3.
Predator Ooze's mana cost is extremely restrictive, but the bugger needs to be Dismembered, Path to Exiled, Oblivion Ringed, or Bant Charmed or it is never going to die and it is always going to get bigger. Period.
Yay for new combo and graveyard hate!!!! I am going to buy a playset of theses right away.
Just realized it killed persist and undying.... zzzzz this card is really too good to be true.... it destroys so many mechanics across formats....
GSZ is already banned but now tooth and nail will be hit.. dang this card will be played in all formats

I find the interaction with the Living End deck hilarious.
It almost stops cascade...but doesn't, since cascaded cards take a short side trip to exile before being cast.
It almost stops Living End...but doesn't, since the creatures are exiled briefly before entering the battlefield.
Living End will get somewhat better if Cage becomes the go-to GY hate card.
I wonder if they will re-evaluate GSZ now that you can't play creatures from the library as easily.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Does this also mean dredge will be unbanned? I don't see them unbanning green sun zenith since I wouldn't expect people to sideboard this in just to stop gsz.

OUCH!! Looks like they gave us a bunch of cards that make that make greaveyard strategies, and then printed a card that screws them so fully. This is going to be an auto SB card for metas that have a lot of snapcaster based control, and I don't think it is for the better. It can be dealt with, but it makes Control jump through one more hoop- slowing it down even further.
I think I would have preferred this card at 3, since turn 3 is the ceiling for the formatI care about most (yes, I know that most decks can produce more than 3 mana before t3), but it is not borked or anything.

Are people really going to run this in their sideboard to stop Snapcasters? For all intents and purposes it's a do-nothing card. Sure you stop their Snaps but is it really worth the sideboard space?

Perhaps a "fixed" Bitterblossom or some other black token creator.
Probably makes more 1/1 Lifelink Vampires.

Also have no clue why those decks aren't trying out Pendelhaven. You don't get Intangible Virtue all the time.

It's a land that taps for a colorless or (for the lowlow price of just 2WB) gives all your guys Deathtouch and Lifelink.
Oh, yeah. I'm totally playing BW Tokens in Modern now. Screw Teachings.
