I don't believe it possible to look at anything in the universe with too abstract an eye.
But when an argument or a definition gets too broad it begins to loose in benefit to smaller subsets. You are unlikely to get good agriculture advice about the desert cultivation if you are only talking about agriculture on a global scale. If we are too broad about defining deck archetypes and supertypes, then we run the risk of not getting the targeted advice that the White Weenie player needs, for example.

I think you gain the most when you can look at a card in both broad and narrow. It is good to judge a card relative to a metagame and a deck for instance.

In life all we can do is try to make things better. Sitting lost in old ways and fearing change only makes us outdated and ignorant.
Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
Snag is the best late game (w/o snapcaster) however if you are going to be obliterating your graveyard without heavy refreshments then mana leak will be your best bet. I honestly think however that Familiar's Ruse will get a hold within specific decks and be a power house that no one saw with the viability of snapcaster right now.
Nice synergy there, if peeps start using this, it will be very bad, since it counters a spell, returns snapcaster back, flash snapcaster in counter another spell and return snapcaster back for more flash in goodness!
2 counters in 1 card, nice!

The problem is, is what do you do with Familiar's Ruse when you don't have Snapcaster? If Delver plays it and doesn't have one out, suddenly they have to bounce their Delver, resetting it to the 1/1 one drop.
Ruse + Snappy is absolutely ridiculous, but you can't always have Snappy out.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
With Snap: Mana Leak, and remand.
Without Snap: Rune Snag, remand.
With Snap, but other utility critters (like Eternal Witness): Familiar's Ruse and remand
I have no idea which is better. Obviously, Snag has its benefits - but it has anti-synergy with Snapcaster Mage (as it exiles the Snag on the way out). In a control deck, which do you think is better?
If you're running Snappy the choice is clear. If yes, Leak.
If you aren't running him for whatever reason ask yourself the following question, "Will I ever board out 1, 2, or 3 Rune Snags but not all 4?" If yes, Leak.
The third and final question is do you want to win more? Yes? :-P
Random question, how'd you change your text color? Just do it as you post? Or is there a way to make it permeant?
what makes mana leak better is the second third and 4th turn of the game.
it's a guaranteed counter on the second turn in all matchups where spell snare isn't a thing (and the other two options don't forgo this issue either), its guaranteed against non-dork decks on the third, and it's guaranteed against anything over 1cmc on the forth turn.
the first mana leak can counter an important t3 bolt or thoughtseize. the other problem with rune snag is that if the opponent is playing them as well, you're increasing the power of their rune snags in the late game by playing your own. its anti-synergistic with snapcaster and in the mirror.
my problem with familiar's ruse is the blowouts with snapcaster mage. you snapcaster targeting familiars ruse and with the trigger still on the stack they kill your snap. value-town, population, opponent.

Worst case scenario, Rune Snag IS a Mana Leak. Best case - it's more.
I just don't understand how this is debatable. Mana cost is the same. They're instances.
I know this is an old post but I'm getting back into playing and maybe I'm not seeing this connection.
