I was looking at picking up a second format to play in addition to standard. What are some good and bad aspects about modern? I have been playing magic off and on for years, but I did not play during several blocks after Mirrodin.
It's good because there are cool fun decks now (imo) but it's bad because it is extremely volatile, there weren't always cool fun decks, and many of the decks are extremely expensive.
Modern resembles Legacy, in that all cards added to it remain available to deck builders unless banned.
This means a couple of things, one that you can build a competitive deck and likely (with modification) continue using it on and off for as long as the format exists.
The other, that tournament quality decks tend to have a notable upfront cost. But, due to the lack of rotation that you can then spend very little money (beyond entry fees) to continue playing for years. This means that you can pay off the initial cost of the deck via the prizes you pull, and then potentially (if good enough) make money on entering tournaments.
I like it in that it allows you a solid manabase, using fetchlands and the ravnica shock duals to allow for even 5 color decks to be viable. This means the three color decks I came to enjoy during the Shards of Alara block are fairly competitive, while mono color and dual color decks show up routinely as well.
It's a nicely diverse meta, like in Legacy, but currently isn't very established so even homebrew decks have a fair chance to compete.

I was saying since september bans punishing fire had to go, and that there was a problem with zoo being the best aggo deck. Now I don't see any problems.
A quick note for people saying the format is expensive:
Building ANY competitive deck in ANY format (except Pauper) IN A VACUUM is going to be expensive. Period. Even Standard.
Moreso if you absolutely, positively HAVE to run the "money card" decks.
That being said, every format (except Legacy, I think) also has competitive decks that can be put together IN A VACUUM for under $200.
I agree with you for the most part. Modern isn't that expensive.
I don't mean to be an ass, but Legacy Burn is Tier 1 (total price: $95-$105) (won the SCG in Richmond by the way), Affinity which is really good, just placed 2nd in that same tourney (total price < $250) And LEDless Dredge is also Tier 1-1.5 at any given time, (total price: <$200).
Legacy is a different beast, a $95 deck (burn) can beat something like BUG Tempo ~$1600, at any given time, depending on the pilot and builds.
You are correct for the most part though. A highly competitive deck in any format is expensive.
You may be thinking of Vintage though... Of the cheap Tier 1 decks, best is by far Titan Dredge ~1100, and Panther Stax Tops at bout $6000. (thats with Unlimited Power 9 haha.)
The format is fun. And unlike Extended which people put down as soon as the PTQ season is over, I think Modern will actually keep some people.
I'm also hoping stores will support it.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
It will stay because it doesn't rotate. Old extended (and new extended) rotated, that's what made people buy the cards for the season and sell them when it was over. I hope and think that will not happen and Modern will be the most popular format after standard.
I feel Modern has no choice BUT to become popular. New players in standard put a lot of time into their decks will become disheartened when it all rotates after a few months, but then they can learn about Modern and realize that they can pick up their favorite deck again...plus add in some new powerhouse cards.

Also, consider that Liliana counts as occasional mana denial, and it starts to become a significant portion of our strategy.

Well, the problem with that is, most good Standard decks other than Jund, Tempered Steel are hard to port into Modern, whereas Caw-Blade is straight banned as of now in Modern (Which it isn't banned in Legacy, and a very good deck). Some decks just can't be replicated in Modern, but are very decent in Legacy if not really good. IMO Modern, appeals more to the brewers, right now. Modern will eventually become just like Legacy, relying on unbannings, new cards, and reprints to start the brewing frenzy again.
Modern is fun, don't get me wrong. It just still feels like it's missing some power level (I don't know what; maybe due to current bannings). Once you piloted Vintage/Legacy I don't want to sacrifice the powerful plays you can make in the Legacy version of a Modern deck.
And yes, I DO think Standard will feed Modern when Standard players realize it's even more expensive to play Standard than Legacy over a few years.

The lack of power is what draws some to the format. Legacy isnt for everyone.

It's nothing like Legacy.

I know my shop will be running weekly Saturday Modern tournaments after the PTQ season ends. I think it will have staying power.
