I have noticed a lot of hate towards modern from people who have never even played the format. I have heard some pretty outrageous claims.
Once someone at my LGS stated that no one played modern because it was "too expensive" (never mind the fact that this guy played legacy AND that many tier 1 modern decks cost less than mid-priced standard decks).
I was once talking the format up to one of my friends and another guy at my LGS chimed in with "don't, its a terrible format". This same guy was one who scrubbed out with Tron at a PTQ. Obviously sour grapes.
So what absurd things have you heard about modern from people that don't play the format (okay, my last example was a guy who played it, but only for a PTQ)?

My friend loves to claim the format is weaker than most limited formats because of the bannings. Although I agree with him Nacatl should come back it seems ridiculous to say that about a format that he hasn't played.
At the last PTQ I played in I was talking with one of my opponents and he said something that I somewhat agree with: The Modern Format is more like Rock Paper Scissors. The match ups determine who wins more than player skill.
Modern is bad because blue isn't number one.
Every deck kills on turn 4 everytime.
Jace is terrible, not powerful, and should be unbanned.
Control is 100% dead and unplayable.
Jund is unbeatable.
Zoo was the boogey man but sucks now and is unplayable because nacatl got banned.
Modern will never last, because it's too much like Standard.
I just heard this one Thursday.
I hear the, "Jace is not too overpowered for the format", one all of the time. I usually then ask them if they every played with Jace in Standard. Most of them did, but only for a few weeks...

I hear the Modern is going to die because blue isnt the color of choice alot.
I also hear an earful about control not being viable.
They nerfed the power to Standard levels.
Its too expensive to get into the format.
The format is too fast.
Its just a terrible format, just play Legacy.
For what it's worth, I don't think Modern's that good of a format at all. I just play it because it's a PTQ format, and there's hope that it will get better with unbannigns
1. Are you a troll?
2. This is not true, if you talk to anyone about modern, they will say its an awsome format, it is just overshadowed by one of the best seasons of standard ever.

Modern dailies will say otherwise. Nobody is still playing modern post ptq. Dailies went from 100ish to now 16-20 (or not even firing).

No one is denying that Modern is going to be seasonally attractive. It's inherent in the Wizards has structured official events - ebbs and flows of people working on Modern vs. working on other formats as they become more and less relevant. People are taking a break from Modern now that it isn't as essential or current, but it will swing back into vogue again.

Really? I didn't know there was a difference. That's more interesting than a random troll saying that Modern is getting no love. Especially with all of us in here that are playing this format actively.
I'll ignore that the format existed while I go to my second Modern tourny for the week tonight. That's right I play it in paper twice a week... I'm not the only one, and a lot of people have dropped Standard completely.
Oh but that's right, Modern will never last.
Well honestly, Legacy will never last, because no new players can afford the buy in prices. I live in an area with a very active Legacy community, and we top out at around 35 players for large events. Our last Modern PTQ was 170 people.

I like Modern. Theres a bunch of cool decks, but I think that since it's still a fairly new format that the potential it has is still pretty untapped. I think in time the format will flesh itself out further and have its own identity.

He's talking about people at his local game store, as well as several Legacy folks that come into threads here when we talking about GP attendance or something along those lines to 'rain on our parade'.
So obviously it is true.
There are several players around my area who are Legacy die hards (who also scrub out of legacy tournys pretty hard) who think that Modern is a 'noob' format or whatever, because, well who knows? People with irrational opinions about things don't have rational reasons for them...

They sound more like just your run of the mill scrubs than people whose opinion you should consider. I don't know them personally but like you said people are irrational, and people that make those snap judgements about a format are generally being irrational.

Funny thing I have found about those 'die-hard' Legacy players, at least in my area, is they are all trading and buying Modern staples they dont have from their Legacy decks. They talk bad about the format then try and trade for staples. Either they are cashing in on the format, or trying to build decks. Either way it seems they have their eyes on the format.

I know some of those guys. They keep telling me they have no interest in playing the format, but are doing just like you said. I honestly think some of them may see the writing on the wall. I give Legacy another 2 years tops before it becomes to hard to find people to play with. Those people will either have to go into Modern, or stop playing altogether. My bet's are on them moving into Modern.
From wiki: Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March 20 in most years), and the "Full Moon" is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Christianity* bases its calculations on the Julian calendar whose March 21 corresponds, during the 21st century, to April 3 in the Gregorian calendar, in which the celebration of Easter therefore varies between April 4 and May 8.

That's what I get for thinking that all holidays are generally just BS. Some people celebrate some weird things.

You have to remember, even if they reprint the shocks and some other staples, IF the player base grows those cards will still be on the more expensive side. I am figuring a reprint of the shocklands, being playable in Standard AND Modern, will only drop the price a few bucks, maybe $5 until they rotate out of Standard again. Then you will see the drop in price. So its still going to be some time before we see some price relief in Modern.
One thing I hope they do is all new art work for all reprint. I like the old stuff, but it would be nice to have a way other then a set symbol to tell the old form the new.
Modern will never last, because it's too much like Standard.

I hear the, "Jace is not too overpowered for the format", one all of the time. I usually then ask them if they every played with Jace in Standard. Most of them did, but only for a few weeks...
Jace was fine when there were answers to him in Alara/Zen era T2. When those answers disappeared, a problem was created.
Once someone at my LGS stated that no one played modern because it was "too expensive" (never mind the fact that this guy played legacy AND that many tier 1 modern decks cost less than mid-priced standard decks).
I can actually sympathize with his position somewhat, although I don't think he expressed himself well. I have a few tier 1 legacy decks fully built so I'm ok with spending money on MtG, however, being so heavily invested in a an eternal format already, the prospect of spending hundreds of dollars on a new format is a bit daunting. Especially considering the format is still highly in flux and WotC has promised reprints, which could destroy the 'investment' one might make into the format. Couple that with the fact that there is some resentment towards modern since it will probably overshadow legacy someday, and we see why a lot of legacy players are hesitant to embrace modern.
There's also the fact that he's currently a $50 card. If he became legal in modern his price would likely double. Couple that with the fact that he may as well he on the reserve list with how eager WotC is to reprint him, and you have a problem. One could argue that he is comparable to Goyf in that regard but I really think we'll be seing a goyf reprint eventually.

That's true. But, I like to think that WotC doesn't ban cards based on price, and that he's banned because of the lack of desire to reprint him if the price gets to the point where they would want to reprint him for the format's health.

Although I haven't played in a PTQ for a month, I disagree with Control not being playable. I played Caw Blade (which may not be traditional Control) at 2 PTQs, coming within a play mistake of top 8 each time.
I actually like Caw Blade's matchup vs. Jund. Affinity is tough, as are some combo decks if not prepared for, but it does well vs. the field.
EDIT> I just realized as I was typing that it was not YOU that was saying these things, but I still want to give my opinion.
It is a money burner for sure though. I started with Zoo, then Splinter Twin, moved to Melira Pod, then Caw Blade, put together Jund, now I have GW Trap or Vengevine, Loam, and am going to try Angel's Grace/Ad Nauseum once I buy 3 more Ad Nauseum. Admittedly, I had most of the pieces of these decks already.
