Honestly, at first, I thought modern was a fledgeling format and the least liked (aside from extended). But the more I think about the more I realize that with the number of people fed up with paying for rotation ($100 a deck please, oh and don't forget about constant meta-shifts! for those were gonna need another $100 if you want ot stay competative every new set release), and the number of people who want an eternal format but don't want to have to pay $1000+ to be competative with very limited options, that modern is catching on...
I sat down and thought to myself "how many people at my LGS play modern?... From the hate of the legacy players I would have believed it was few, but then I realized... We had 12 people show up for the first modern tourny and there are 17 in total that play the format. Compared to only 5 legacy players at my LGS.
Do you think modern will become even more popular?
It is understandable. Lots of people fed up with Standard being the flagbearing constructed format but with no place to go because Extended and Legacy are even worse. Modern offers a practical alternative to all three and it's starting to show that player's are becoming more and more receptive to the idea of a format with a larger card pool that isn't as degenerate as the other formats. Most players aren't a huge fan of card rotation.

You've got a rat in your walls, and cheese won't solve anything.
Well, those reasons were why Modern was created. So the result was gonna be success or failure because of some problem they failed to predict. Plus wizards seems to be supporting the format a lot.
- I've never liked rotations.
- I like legacy but don't like its prices and its warped format because of it.
- I loved old extended, the only thing I disliked was the rotation (which was once every 3 years at first).
So, if they had to destroy extended and make me wait more than a year so that Modern was created, it was worth the effort IMO.
The shop I normally go to struggles hard to get people for modern events, but I went to a new shop when I had a Friday night free. This place had a free tournament with around 12 players who showed up. Great times were had by all.
One guy in particular had only been playing about a year, but said that the constant rotations turned him off from Standard and he didn't want to invest in Legacy. This was the prime reason that I aimed straight at Modern when I got back in last year...although I've now started Legacy as well, haha.
Modern has the advantage of inevitability in getting players to start playing the format when they become frustrated with Standard.

Also, consider that Liliana counts as occasional mana denial, and it starts to become a significant portion of our strategy.
Basiccally, i chose modern cause i was tired of the same 3-4 decks in standard...modern is so diversified...Also, modern helps you in your standard improvement, since playing all sort of metas helps you adapt...
I hope it will be more popular, but prices still too high for some stapples, hope they reprint some good cards and it might help getting a new bunch of players...
Honestly, since I started modern, I have not been able to return to standard...I find it boring...

Now that you've linked that thread here the poll is warped because the people that read this subforum are gonna choose Modern in the poll. To be fair you should go link the poll in the standard section (and the other format subforums) too.

Haha, very true, but it should be noted that before I posted it here it was still in the #1 spot with 10 while all other formats struggled to hit even 5. That says alot.

I think the number of viewers on each subforum is a better "poll" than the poll itself.
Definitely. Traffic is the best indicator.
That said, the legacy forum did not have a link to that thread, and its score is still higher than standard. Possibly it may be a case of "my favorite format is legacy, but I can only play Standard in my area since I can find legacy players" kind of scenario. Also, since there is so much activity in standard forums, the standard players might have less interest in venturing out to read other subforums. IDK, sometimes it's a different interpretation of the polls, such as it is asking about favorite format, not the format that they play regularly.
Most of the people I know in Modern already have played Standard long enough to own most of the established decks, or already play Legacy and get tired of trying to find people to play with. We have a large Legacy community, but only one shop is running tournaments, and it's on a Sunday. There are a lot of people that are busy on Sundays, mainly students.
My personal experience is that I got tired of throwing money away on Standard, because essentially that is what you're doing. More than 90% of the cards that were playable in Standard are simply unplayable in Legacy. Modern doesn't rotate, and a very large portion of the cards that were playable in Standard are very playable in Modern. In fact I would venture to say with the larger pool more of the cards that were considered unplayable when they were in Standard are playable now in Modern.
I like being able to get use out of my Legacy cards that otherwise would be collecting dust in a binder somewhere. I can only play one deck at a time, and the rest usually just gets thrown in the binder sitting on the shelf. I'm not one of those guys that loans cards out, I've had a bad experience with that before, so I just don't do it. I have some cards that I hadn't taken out of that binder for months, then Modern was announced and I started getting use out of them. That is why I prefer Modern, not to mention just having a few decks and updating them is far cheaper than buying into a format every 3 months like you do in Standard.

Add me to the list of people that gottired of rotations in standard. I dont even play it anymore because i would rather invest my time and money on cards that i can play for years (modern & commander) rather that months.
I played back in old extended so i have most all the current modern staples and can pretty much build any viable deck i please. I was thrilled to see all my "worthless" shocks and extended cards came back for some more action and will stick around for as long the format does.
Modern doesn't rotate, keeps a fair ban list, and has a reasonable card pool.
For a returning player, getting into standard is really expensive and deck investments are often short lived. For instance, I'm not buying or trading cards from the scars block unless they are really good in my Modern or Commander decks.
