Vintage and Legacy are dead and dying in my area, and while EDH is fun, I'd like to get back into a format that i might play at a GP or PTQ at some point in the future. I can't afford to spend money on cards consistently every few months, and I don't like playing decks that are not Tier 1, so standard is out. Modern, on the other hand, is gaining some traction around here and will be a GP format in the fall at Toronto. Sold.
The thing is, I know NOTHING about the format, at all. About 2 years ago, I was quite the vintage and legacy expert, and I'm pretty deep into Commander at this point, but modern is a completely new dragon for me. It's a very wide-open format, and I'm missing most of the key cards, since I stopped playing before the new frame came out and only restarted at Shard of Alara.
Thanks to the generosity of a relative who was thoughtful enough to include me in her will, I will be able to buy into modern sometime during the summer. Budget will not be an issue, but I can manage maybe two decks at most, as my EDH deck needs full pimping which will be over $3000 already.
I'm looking for some thoughts on what decks to get into. In legacy, I've enjoyed playing Canadian Thresh, Counterbalance (including the creature-less thopters version), and TES in the past. I have not so much enjoyed Goblins or Merfolk, and never tried Elves, Reanimator, Survival, or the newer decks (Maverick, etc...) in the format. In Vintage, I LOVED playing TPS and Dredge and enjoyed Oath as well. I HATED playing shops, felt very "meh" about Nobel Fish and never bothered with any other deck in the format since I came back to the game.
I like combo-control, pure control, and tempo best, and truly hate pure aggro decks.
Recommendations?

What crossover cards from Legacy do you currently own? (Emphasis on the manabase) You should not have to pay anything near $3K to get into the format.
Just assume I own nothing, but don't worry about budget. The $3k I mentioned was for EDH, not Modern, but it doesn't matter. If the deck is simply the 60 most expensive cards in the format I'll manage, since it's a one-time thing.
I have a few Zen fetchlands, but most of my legacy stuff is pre-modern. I don't current own goyf's, but I have in the past, and can get my hands on a set with no difficulty (as a one-time thing).

Yeah 3k could buy playsets of just about every staple for modern...
I'd look through the primers in the established subforums.
Storm and exarch twin are both good combo decks (though they lack control)
And Ux control is also viable at tier 1-ish as is Ux tempo

Mono-U Fae is very easy to build once you have the Cliques and Mutavaults. The next most expensive cards would be C. Command, Shackles, and Spell Snares, and I'd be surprised if you didn't have the V. Cliques/Snares already via Legacy.

Look at all of the Modern 4-0 and 3-1 lists and you will get a good sense for the meta / tier 1 decks. Pick a deck that looks enjoyable and then hit the archteype on the forums here.

I would invest in each of the following, since you can build many different archetypes with these as a pivot point, and many of the other cards in top tier decks aren't that expensive.
Total value s/b around $1,000-1,400.. Obviously you can eliminate a lot of $$ if you don't plan on playing blue and/or black. But those are the big money cards of the format and owning those will basically let you build just about any top tier deck without having to invest too much additional money.
The T1 decks in Modern are probably, Affinity, Storm, Twin, RG Tron, UW Tron, Jund, and Delver lists of varying flavors. Other things that do fairly decently include Bant, Zoo, Loam, Caw, and Pod.
As for what I'd suggest buying into; Jund is probably going to stick around and remain solid, no matter what's printed in the future or banned/unbanned in the future. The storm lists are pretty resilient, and Twin and Storm can have a transformational sideboard to dodge hate (if that's your thing).
I imagine that if you enjoyed Thresh flavors you'd like Delver(Delver lists range from UB to RUG to UWR to UR, etc) or Caw.
So i guess, if you'd like a list of cards;
Goyfs
V. Clique
Bob
Fetches in the color(s) you'd like [looks like UR would be a good idea for you]
Shocks (you MAY want to wait on them, i imagine they'll be reprinted soon)
Geists
Thoughtseize
Kitchen Finks
Spell Snare
Sword of FaI
Sword of WaP
Past in Flames
Gifts Ungiven
Decks similar to what you have played before which you may enjoy:
Delver [RUG] - Similar to Canadian Thresh, but you don't attack the opponent's resources as much. This won a Grand Prix recently in Italy. There were 2 copies of the deck in the top 8.
Storm [UR] - Bunch of cantrips and rituals and then cast Grapeshot. Not as exciting as TEPS, etc in legacy but still fun and it can be very effective.
Tron [UW] - This melds control elements with a big end game. The most recent list to do well was played at the most recent American GP by LSV. You basically want to assemble Tron (All 3 Urza lands) as quickly as possible while disrupting your opponent with counters and removal, then start casting Eldrazi. The deck also ran a combo where you cast Gifts Ungiven for an Unburial Rites and an Iona, Shield of Emeria or an Elesh Norn, Grand Cerobite, failing to find the other 2 cards at the end of the opponent's turn, then using the Unburial Rites to reanimate whatever target you put in the graveyard.
Tron [G(R)] - More all in combo deck than UW Tron, but also faster and more powerful. It plays a lot of cantripping mana eggs like Chromatic Sphere and land search spells to get Tron online as early as possible and then cast spells which are difficult to deal with. One of the first versions played 4 copies each of Karn Liberated and Emrakul the Aeons Torn. This took down a few PTQs last season I think.
Hivemind [Urgb] - Very similar to legacy Hivemind decks. Obviously the ramp cards are not as powerful, but the plan is the same. Play Hivemind, then play a Pact which your opponent can't pay for on their turn. I don't know how well the deck has been doing but I have been seeing it pop up more regularly on MTGO...
Loam [Gbruw] - There are a lot of directions you can go with Life from the Loam decks. Bronson Magnan won the last Modern GP in the US with a Loam deck. It combines control and combo very well to me, while not actually being a blue deck. You can even add blue and do some degenerate things with Gifts Ungiven and Trade Routes.
Melira Pod [GBW] - Also not a blue deck, but it is a resilient combo deck. Plan A is to get this combo on the board: Melira, Sylvok Outcast + Kitchen Finks OR Murderous Redcap + Viscera Seer. You can then sacrifice the Kitchen Finks to gain infinite life or sacrifice the redcap to deal infinite damage. The deck also plays Birthing Pod to help assemble the combo and get silver bullet creatures to stop whatever your opponent is doing. One of the more powerful decks in the format with multiple PTQ wins. This is the deck that the above loam deck beat in the finals of the GP.
I have similar tastes to you but you seem to lean more on the Spike side. I play Tezzerator and I think I am the only one to place with it consistently on MODO. It is definitely not Tier 1 despite my best efforts. I also play UW Tron.
You can just look up lists to see what cards you would need...
If shocks are reprinted in standard, their price is only going up or remaining the same (for at least the time they're in standard). Now is just as good a time as any to buy them.
You like tempo best. Play RUG or patriot Delver. Probably $800 for RUG?
You want the best deck in the format? Well, that's debatable, but from a flexibility standpoint, that deck is probably Jund or tron. I'd invest in Jund if budget is not an option, as it contains a massive chunk of Modern staples. Probably $1200? If you play Legacy already, you might even already have the goyfs, so that cuts $400 out of most decks. Vintage, too, eh? Just sell a Mox Sapphire and buy whatever deck you want. Why do I get the distinct feeling that this is a troll? No offense if it's not, I'm just not sure what exactly you're concerned about when you can clearly have every staple in the format.
It's not a troll. I do not, nor have I ever owned power except my Timetwister for EDH which I acquired for far less than it is worth.
I am willing to invest in two decks in this format out of an inheritance I am getting. My regular mtg budget is only $50 -$80 per month, most of which goes to draft, so what I spend upfront had best be good because it willhave to last me a while.
Hope that makes more sense.
Some good advice in the thread so far. Thinking some form of delver/caw deck and either Tron or Jund atm.

This might sound too obvious, but definitely playtest/proxy your potential new decks a LOT before dropping the money on them. Sounds like you will be playing 1-2 decks pretty exclusively and something you do not want to happen is to get extremely bored of the archetype you are piloting.
I'm actually starting to get very bored of Jund + Caw-Blade. I consider myself a pretty decent pilot of both decks so familiarity with the decks + competency are not affecting my views. Granted I borrow quite a few cards for the decks so I didn't drop $700+ on either, but the money I've spent on the Dark Confidants + Hallowed Fountains is starting to seem like money poorly spent.
I wished that I simply stuck with Melira Pod since I have always enjoyed the toolboxes + the ability to go over the top with a combo.
Sorry to derail your thread a little bit but I figured it would be better to just post in here rather than make a new topic.
I am planning on getting into modern as well and was wondering what you thought the chances are of a deck like affinity staying a strong tier 1 / 1.5 deck?
I really like it and its playstyle but I want to have a deck that is not gonna be crap in the next month or so.

I agree with Blippy, given the fact that it's been strong in Modern for a good while, and it's still a strong aggro deck in Legacy I can't see the tiny robots going anywhere; even if they do decide to ban Cranial Plating or something stupid like that it could probably just transform into a Tempered Steel type of deck, or something along those lines and still be pretty strong.

Do people think Pod has longevity? I love the look of the deck but I'm afraid it will either get too strong and suffer a banhammer, or fizzle out. It was my first inclination after looking at the dailies, but not sure if it's a good long-term choice.

Pod has longevity, sure. I've yet to hear anyone complain about the deck, so it's regarded as mostly fair. Definitely a strong deck with a good pilot. I don't see a lot of it outside of MTGO, though. Most likely because it's just annoying to sift through your deck to find cards and shuffle it every couple of minutes with a paper deck.
If you like combo/control you may want to take a look at Twin. Nobody has mentioned it because its kind of the elephant in the room that nobody likes, but its one of modern's most pure combo decks.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

I feel Pod does have longevity. It is very interactive since it is a creature based combo deck. Its combo can be sufficiently disrupted such that players don't feel completely helpless and complain that the deck is too non-interactive or too powerful so I'm positive that bannings will not be affecting it anytime soon. Every new set may contribute to its utility creature toolbox and you can bet that there will always be potential candidate creatures since WotC has been pushing creatures to the extent that spell based combo has not been getting too many additions. I'm still waiting for someone to break Reforge the Soul.
You will find that most games, especially after G1, will not be: T1 Birds/Hierarch. T2 Kitchen Finks. T3 Melira + Seer. Infinte life.
For the above line of play to occur, your opponent literally must have a horrid hand with no removal/counters or must be extremely inexperienced with facing a Pod deck.
I personally feel decks like Jund get stale quickly because the decklist is extremely tight and allows little room for card choice innovation or decision trees. You rarely see decklists that deviate from its 16 creatures (4x of BBE, DC, Goyf, Finks), 4x Liliana, 15x Removal + Discard, 25x lands. Melira Pod definitely allows for more tuning of its utility creature choices and more decision trees. Its lines of play will not be as obvious for your opponent to follow.

Why does nobody like it? It seems to put up results. Is it just too linear?

This is pretty interesting. I think I'll settle on Pod for one of the decks- I love playing with the card in EDH so I think it will be my style. Still torn on the other one. I like the idea of running 4 Snapcasters, but my absolute favorite decks ever have been combo deck, so maybe twin? I do not see myself playing modern storm - it will just feel too blah compared with storm decks of the past I've run with Yawgmoth's Bargain and other completely stupid cards like that.

[14:58] Paramount_Elite: Anyways don't confuse Casual EDH with EDH or the highly compettive format called French Duel Commander.

If you want a combo deck just play affinity. i've won on turn 3 before. Consistently too which is sad...
