Hi, I would like to know what is the best competitive Budget Modern Deck (or semi-competitive) against the average field.
I know that Soul Sisters finished second in Turin, looks like a cool deck to play. Is there any other under 100-150$ ?
What are Souls Sisters worst and best matchup ?
What can I add to the Michael Tiel's Decklist (and sideboard) in the current metagame or against random deck that can shows up in local tournament...here's my copy/paste decklist...I know this list is in ''Developping Competitive'' but I want to adapt it to more ''unknown'' local environment...
I would imagine this deck would have a tough time against deck likes Splinter Twin and Turbo Karn. I would run a full playset of Ghostly Prison in your sideboard.
Against Splinter Twin, 2 Sisters out pretty much kill the combo ? But I think 4x Ghostly Prison in SB may be a good idea...could also help against random aggro deck...
For Turbo Karn, what is the best hooser ? Surgical Extraction or a card to speed up the tempo in the SB?

If its Urza lands, Ghost Quarter/Surgical Extraction kills the deck. I've had Urza Karn quit T1/2 doing that combo.

[14:58] Paramount_Elite: Anyways don't confuse Casual EDH with EDH or the highly compettive format called French Duel Commander.
2 Sisters kill the Exarch Twin combo until 1 Sister gets Flame Slashed. 1 Sister gets Flame Slashed pretty often from my experience. Use Ghostly Prison as security.
Demi-Martyr Proc Soul Sisters generally has an easier time against aggro than combo. Since it can actually drag games to the mid- or late-game reliably, I believe it is the best Soul Sisters incarnation Modern has seen so far. And the Tron match-up is slightly better than plain old Martyr Proc's thanks to the aggro. (Not much better, though.)
Death and Taxes can usually be built for $100-200, depending on the version. The only somewhat pricey cards are aether vial and kitchen finks. The link I gave you also includes it's match-ups, they are pretty decent.
Soul sisters is also a good deck, with affinity/jund being rather popular and zoo on the rise again. It's not as good against jund as the other two, but it is still pretty good for the current meta.
Let's say I go with Soul Sister, what would be the best build at the moment, forget the sideboard, I will look into that later.
Honestly, I don't like the land base a lot, can I lose some space in the SB and put those colorless producing lands there in case I face Urza's Land ?
This is the build I'm considering, not much different (except lands) than Thiel's version, what card can I remove without affecting the deck...is Surgical Extraction in SB enough against combo...would you put 4x Ghostly mainboard...is there a place for Survival Cache in this deck if yes in exchange of which card...
The biggest change I'm considering is...all 3x Honor the Pure out for 1x extra Mikaeus and 2x extra Ghostly Prison (or 1 Ghostly and 1 Path to Exile)...would it make sense and why...
Sisters is cheap and reliable, especially if your local meta is full of aggro. Take me for example. I play a Rw Goblins build that placed in in t16 t8 and t4 at 3 separate ptqs this past season, didn't play a single soul sisters build at any of them. Come back to my local shop each weekend and proceed to go 0-x because the havoc that deck causes me. It really is the cheapest deck you can make that actually has a fighting chance against the rest of the field, albeit a bit boring to me to play with. As a side note goblins is also incredibly cheap aside from 4 shocks and 8 fetches the rest of the deck is 40 bucks tops.
After testing the deck on Cockatrice and in real life, I can say that I really like it...
Went 14-1 on cockatrice against many competitive decks (lot of affinity...easy matchup in my opinion)...the only card that screw me was Vault Skirge in a UB Tezzeret Build...I don't know why but this Vault Skirge equip with cranial plating is dangerous...
In real life, it was a total domination...Death and Taxes...RG Aggro..Affinity...were all really easy game...we played with no sideboard..because some players didn't have any so it may have help a bit...
Also, I was wondering if the new Rhox Faithmender (M13) would be playable in my build...this was the final deck I was playing in the last week...
The fact that I've almost no non-basic land kill the Tectonic Edge strategy, also I realize that I can keep a 1-Land Hand if I had Martyr of Sands in hand...actually that were my easiest game....18 life on second turn...even if I get no land on the draw...
Umm UR storm is pretty cheap. And it will stomp the life out of Soul Sisters.
What is with people wanting to play fair decks?
RG Tron is way more powerful than Soul Sisters.

In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.
My goal is not to say that this is the best deck of all time but that it do fairly well against a lot of deck...it's my first ''competitive'' Modern deck and I only share my experience with it..
I would really like to see this RG Tron Decklist you are talking about, I would like to built it too if it looks cool...can you share the link or put a list up...
UR Storm...is it in the Established thread ? What list is the better..
If you want something that's cheap and has a good chance against most of the format, I would just play affinity.
Affinity has been a tier 1 deck since the start of the format, is the fastest aggro deck around (faster than most combo decks in modern), and doesn't cost a fortune to build either. It also has a pretty strong sideboard, since you can easily board in spellskites (anti splinter twin) Canonists (anti storm) Blood moon (anti tron) or realistically, anything else that could give you problems. It generally just comes down to how much artifact hate an opponent has, and even then, affinity can win through a decent amount of hate.

Second Affinity. It isn't much more expensive than Soul Sisters, but it's leagues ahead as a competitive deck.
Soul Sisters is good, but I cannot beat Tron. Ever. Don't play decks that auto-lose to one of the most played decks in the format. It also is very average vs. Affinity, and I have a hard time vs. Jund, which are also played a lot.
also I realize that I can keep a 1-Land Hand if I had Martyr of Sands in hand...actually that were my easiest game....18 life on second turn...even if I get no land on the draw...
Don't do that. If you don't draw land, you're looking at what, T3 Serra Ascendant? I'm sure your opponent will let you swing with that. Assuming your Martyr wasn't bolted.

Second Affinity. It isn't much more expensive than Soul Sisters, but it's leagues ahead as a competitive deck.
Why did I went 6-0 against 2-3 different affinity deck build on cockatrice...don't tell me it is because I'm a good player...I did forget about 15 times to add life when my opponent play a creature with those Soul Warden...and luck don't think so...the matchup is good in my opinion...and those RG aggro were even easier...

It depends the matchup...against a red deck maybe not but against Delver or non-red or non-black deck it serves me well...at 38 it's almost impossible to go under 30..even a turn 3 Ascendant (6/6) is ok in my opinion when your are at 38...but if you did get a land it's the perfect hand in my opinion...and Martyr is not as crucial than in other Martyr-Proc build...the card that win you game are Honor of the Pure and Spectral Procession

Affinity is stronger not because it beats Soul Sisters heads-up (that doesn't really matter--affinity is just one deck in the meta, and Soul Sisters is pretty rare), but because it does better against the rest of the meta.
An RG Tron decklist might look like, off the top of my head:

3 Grove of the Burnwillows
1 Eye of Ugin
12 Urza Lands
4 Expedition Map
4 Sylvan Scrying
4 Explore
4 Ancient Stirrings

You beat affinity because you have a good matchup against it, not because you're playing a better deck.
There is an entire subforum dedicated to the Tron archetype, but since you somehow haven't played against it, (not sure how since it's all over cockatrice) you can count on them resolving a turn 5-6 Emrakul, a turn 4 Iona, or a turn 3 Karn with surprising consistency, while also being able to control the board with wraths and counters. I also wouldn't count random match wins in cockatrice as relevant. Free programs like cockatrice are generally where people test out new brews, strange updates on archetypes (to see if it works) or on the other hand, lots of subpar players are there. So, what i'm generally saying here is that while cockatrice can be a good place to test certain matchups and deck relevance, saying you're deck is good because you beat some players on cockatrice doesn't mean a lot.
Martyr Proc isn't a new deck, everyone knows it's good against aggro, but the problem there is it isn't all that well positioned against the other decks. Even vs. splinter twin, which it has inherent hate for, it still has to get around counters, removal, all while trying to prevent a turn 4 win.

I agree with this. I've gotten quite a few wins that I shouldn't have because my opponents would grossly misplay and/or obviously don't know their own + my deck well enough to play optimally (Ex: Tapping out on their turn after seeing the Pestermite + Splinter Twin in my hand a turn earlier via Duress). Many of Cockatrice users also use decks that you can reasonably expect to NEVER face in a tournament setting which makes playtesting against those users moot. It's really irritating to title your game something like "Modern Competitive 2/3 with SB" only to have someone testing their slow Heartless Summoning homebrew joining the game.
To the OP, honestly just look at TCGplayer decklists or http://www.mtgo-stats.com/stats/Modern (for MTGO) to see what cheap decks are doing well in the Dailys.
Nice link MiniLuv, I'm new to mtg online....will scroll through this site..Soul sisters is deck #8, 5% of the decks...not that rare...
I faced #1, 2, 3, 4, 9 yesterday on cockatrice...all wins...some build may have been weak...but some looks exact net deck...
also, i know I can't judge a deck only with online matchup...
You probably shouldn't also be judging decks on so few matchups, of course. If Soul Sisters really regularly crushed the four most common decks in the format, well... it would be more common.

I don't think you'll get away with that against real opponents. You can pull it off on Cockatrice or the MTGO casual section, but see what the guy playing Jund does when he sees T1 Martyr (It's Lightning Bolt). Now you're on T2, with 1 land, and your hand of Warden, Ascendant, Squadron Hawk, Pridemate, Procession, Ranger is completely unplayable.
Trust me. I play Soul Sisters. Don't play Martyr T1 if you want to gain life off it. And don't keep 1 land hands. Affinity doesn't keep 1 land hands.

Online testing/playing is new to me but I can make the difference between someone playing 2 Black Lotus on 1st in Modern and a competitive Modern deck, I didn't count the matchups that made no sense...
but see what the guy playing Jund does when he sees T1 Martyr (It's Lightning Bolt).
That's why I said in previous post that it depends against what you're playing...like on game 2 after a 1st game lasting 10 turns...
I also prefers to have 3 lands in my opening hand but I'm not a big fan of mulliganing to 3 cards to get those 3 lands...it's just that getting above 35 life on turn 2 is not that bad when you think about it...but yes you have more experience playing the deck than me...so I suppose you're right...but I will still keep this hand when I face Delver, Affinity or comparable...
That's why I said in previous post that it depends against what you're playing...like on game 2 after a 1st game lasting 10 turns...
Sure, fair enough.
Although I think Affinity is one of the worst to keep a slow hand against. They have the potential to burn you down under 30 easy.
