How much support is Modern getting in paper from LGS? I am a TO outside the US and thought it would be pretty easy to find some place to play modern when I visit NY in August, but from what I see, the closest place which holds Modern tournaments is a store in Jersey.
Does anywhere do the equivalent of a legacy Mox tournament? Maybe for Goyfs, Bobs, Cliques, etc?
Mostly store tournaments, weekly events and things like that at select stores. There is no premier circuit like SCG legacy to raise the bar up for modern just yet.
Most stores are likely handing out store credit which you could spend on staples.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
My FLGS did some Modern events, there was little interest, and they stopped.
It's kind of self-perpetuating: Nobody wants to buy a Modern deck when there are no events, nobody wants to run Modern events when nobody has a deck...

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
One of my local stores hosts modern events, but it's a store in Jersey so it might be the same store you are talking about honestly.
It's a real mixed bag of young kids with m12 intro packs, homebrews, and then some serious decks. It only goes three rounds and you are done in like 2-3 hours it seems.
It would be nice if some other stores started picking it up and running a Sunday afternoon event or something. In addition, I only know what place that runs legacy events as well.

Well, what I did was run unsanctioned events first, where people could use a limited number of proxies. The prizes were format staples like shocklands.
From the start I named a date where we would have our first real tournament, months in the future, so that people could plan and get their decks together. Right now, we rarely get over 10 people for tournaments, but we have a fair amount of people with decks who are willing to play. Something to consider if you are trying to get modern going in your neck of the woods.
I have 3 LGSs that are WoTC sanctioned. Two of them started running Modern tournaments weekly and quickly stopped due to lack of interest. When Modern had first come out, one of them had a Goyf tournament, and got 30 people; not a whole lot.
Recently, two stores had Modern GPTs, each gave out a set of Goyfs for 1st and a set of Confidants for 2nd. Each tournament got only 16 people (after each store owner had loaned out multiple decks).... There just isn't interest in the format. The biggest complaint that I've heard is that the banned list has killed all of their interest in the format.

Sorry your part of the country is like that. I have multiple LGS, with in an hour of me, that run Modern tournaments by me that have 30-50 people show up regularly. Even more when they start throwing in staples.
Its sad when people cant look past something they cant control and enjoy the format as it is.
QQ I cant play my favorite card/deck is all it adds up to.
I'm in New England, so it's not exactly like there aren't many Magic players here; in fact just the opposite, we're overflowing with players. PTQs regularly hit 180+ attendants, (limited ones get even more) and there are GPTs, box tournaments, and 1Ks all the time.
The fact is, despite how many people here might like the format, banned cards is bad press. I truly believe the format won't really take off until shocks get reprinted, and some cards come off that banned list.
Indeed. It is an excellent format, it is a shame some peoples perspectives of it got jaded in the beginning. Hopefully the next Pro Tour will get people to reevaluate the format.
There store I play the most at is pretty casual, excluding myself and my team. I can't tell you the faces of frustration and confusion I would get when Timmy casual was showing me his sweet new modern deck, and I have to burst his bubble with the old "Sorry dude, but Ancestral Vision/Rite of Flame/Ponder/Preordain/Chrome Mox/Green Sun's Zenith/Bitterblossom" is banned. There are others, but these were the most common offenders. I'm not saying all of these cards should be unbanned, but it's certainly very frustrating for someone who gets excited about their new deck, only to find out they can't play the cards that are in it. A lot of these players FNM weekly and play EDH; they all have extensive collections, so card availability isn't/wasn't much of a problem.
When we had our first modern tournament (the one that got 30 people), the few casual players who decided to give it a shot all got stomped by Tron and Combo, and the competitive players just didn't enjoy the format; which is why we never got another good turnout.

You're telling me that a pathetic 16 people showed up to win $400 or $200 worth of Modern/Legacy staples? With prizes like that, just about anyone would build a modern deck even if for just one event.. Sounds like your MTG community has bigger problems than just the popularity of Modern.
My main LGS supports a weekly Modern supported by store credit based on attendance. We generally get 16 people minimum and have gotten into the low 20's several times. It seems to be about the same as Legacy was a few years ago when I started playing back in Standard after a 12 year Magic gap. The Legacy events have grown to probably near 40 people and Modern definitely started struggling to get 8 for the first few weeks.
Personally I feel that Legacy is too expensive to dive into with a decent deck and there's just FAR too many cards I don't know and don't know how to play against. Extended rotates so it's not really better than Standard except giving a little more time with the same cards. Modern is balanced and lets me play a wide array of cards so I enjoy it thoroughly. People who ***** about banned cards are generally the type that want to net deck and win with little to no personal thought.

Magic in New England is thriving. The three main stores around me are all within 20 minutes of each other, all compete for FNM, and all get 30+ people every week. One store even does two FNMs. Not to mention PTQs around here are HUGE; in fact I've been told by people on the PT, and people from other areas that NE is the hardest place to qualify for the PT. Legacy, Standard and Limited all do extremely well around here. As hard as it is for people on this forum to believe, a LOT of people simply don't like Modern.
As a legacy player, I was really down on modern for the first year or so, but within the last half a year my LGS's legacy tourneys have been a bit anemic with turnouts barely reaching 8 people with tiered decks. I saw the RWu delver deck with isochrons and such from last PTQ season and figured that I already had all of the cards outside of lands. I've been a fan of the format ever since. The bi-weekly modern FNM is the largest steady event at my LGS drawing in over 30 people in a small town.

I will admit, different formats thrive in different parts of the country. When I was out east last year all anyone talked about was Legacy. When I brought up Modern I was laughed at. Then when I went out west all they talked about was EDH and no one wanted to play Legacy or Modern.
I live in an area that has a diverse player base and the LGS that can keep everyone happy.

I believe if you cant find some enjoyment in the format as it is now, you never will unless they make it a uber spike format which would turn off some that are playing now.
My suggestion would to be keep playing Legacy and keep checking in. Maybe the format will morph into something you want it to be, but dont hold your breath.

Of course you cant get anyone to play when the majority of the players are casual and a group of spikes roflstomp them the first sanctioned Modern event the LGS has. Why would they play a format that the spikes just win again? Its just donating money to the prize pool, with no way to possible win playing the decks they like. Even if they unbanned all the cards, you still wont be able to get the casual crowd back to play. Its like that everywhere.

The general attitude around here is "call me when they unban something", so yeah, you're right in that department

The same group of casuals that got stomped out in the Modern tournament are the same group of people who get stomped out at every fnm and tournament we have. The difference is the psychological aspect of "Well, I'm probably going to lose at FNM/box tournament/GPT, but hey, I'll get to play my own favorite deck and maybe I'll do well", but when Modern came around the attitude was different. Many didn't even play, and those who did weren't playing the deck they originally brewed, because cards they wanted to use were banned, and still didn't do well. With standard, at least they have the comfort of playing their favorite decks, but with modern, that comfort is gone.

Seems backwards, but like I said, it could be a regional thing. There are not that many cards on the ban list. I am going to assume its just the fact they are use to playing Standard and they dont have many (if any) banned cards.
I am actually surprised the ban list for Modern is so small.
