This may seem a silly question. I Stopped playing magic right after the worldwake release (busy with life for a bit) but I'm getting back into the game and I can't seem to find a good coherant explanation of what happened to extended format. I love eternal formats, My pride is a 700 dollar legacy deck. And I also enjoyed playing extended since legacy tournaments seem few and far between.
Well I'm getting back into the game and it seems that my extended is gone and has been replaced with modern. Can someone explain what the difference is? I dug up a couple of my old extended decklists and before repurchasing cards and such I wanted to make sure I understood the format and such.
Extended is still a format, or at least WotC claims it is. Not really any major tournaments run in that format though. They stopped it after people didn't want to play it any more as it was "just a collection of the unfun standard decks of the past" such as jund, faeries, etc.
Modern is a non-rotating format, and the legal cards are those that are from 8th edition and after. There is also a banlist. I recommend seeing this thread for a lot of details on the format.
