So I've seen from a number of threads here that Knight of the Reliquary is seen as a particularly great creature in Modern. The obvious synergy between it and fetchlands, as well as the mana fixing possibilities seem like solid reasons to run it.
I figure it has more uses than that though, looking at the kind of mana bases for decks that run it. Can anyone explain certain situations where its ability to fetch out any land is particularly strong, and how that would play out in a game?
Go to my blog, Musings of the False God, for in-depth guides playing the game, from the building blocks of deck design to deceiving your opponent through clever game play!

Steppe is cute but in reality it's far too narrow and awkward to draw without Knight. Bojuka Bog is reasonable, though. Same with Horizon Canopy to harness that power for direct card advantage. But more times than not you're going to tap your forest, sac, grab a fetch, crack it. +2/+2 Knight, and one free mana in your pool.
You can also accelerate for a turn with KotR. Tap your mana into the pool and then tap the Knight to search for another untapped land and float another mana. There's a reason she's been a staple in standard, modern, and legacy. This creature is something amazing.

Mhjames: mtgsalvation: I DON'T SEE HOW THIS CARD IS GOOD. I KNOW PATRICK CHAPIN USED IT AND WENT 8-0, BUT THAT WAS A SMALL TOURNAMENT. THE CARD IS TOO SLOW. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE OPPONENT HAS A SPELL IN THE GRAVEYARD
In addition to other things being said, if you run Lotus Cobra it's even more acceleration by always guaranteeing landfall. If you run something like Treetop Village it's essentially searching for another creature.
Someone earlier mentioned fetching up Tectonic Edge or Ghost Quarter against Tron. I've personally used it to fetch up a GQ, destroyed a Tron land my opponent only had one of, then used Surgical Extraction to shut down the tron permanently.

Of course, Sowing Salt does all that with just one card.
True, but it's much slower, by the time most decks have 4 mana in modern a tron deck might have 7-10 mana. I got to have fun in game two vs a RG Tron deck last week where he did turn 1 Urza's Mine, I did turn 1 Ghost Quarter pay 2 life Surgical Extraction.

I can't imagine using this card in any competitive modern deck. It's infinitely worse than Surgical Extraction - and note that Surgical Extraction is itself not such a great card in modern.

Sowing Salt is obviously a sideboard card for Tron and Tron alone. And I fail to see how a guaranteed one-for-one is "infinitely worse" than a card that is usually card disadvantage...

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.

Because first of all, using up your sideboard slots for cards that deal with Tron lands and Tron lands alone is a poor strategy to begin with (Surgical Extraction is much more versatile / applicable to our meta). This coupled with the fact that Sowing Salt is a 2RR costing sorcery makes it significantly worse than Surgical Extraction. (Obviously the word "infinitely" was a hyperbole).
I'm kind of shocked that nobody has mentioned Windbrisk Heights yet. Knight of the Reliquary can not only fetch further copies of the Heights, giving you more chances at hitting backbreaking spells for free during combat, but it can also fetch up manlands to make it easier for the Heights to activate.

Yea, I remember trying that "godly" combo against tron. Mulled to 5 on the draw after he played his power plant. T1 I quartered and extracted, while he looked for a forest for his ancient stirrings. In the meantime while I completely killed my chances of any tempo, he managed to land 6 lands (including eye of ugin) and kept sweeping my board with clasms and All is Dust until he finished me off with karn. Your only hope is that you're running blue at that point to keep their threats in check.
Bear in mind that with all the rocks and land/colorless tutors they will almost NEVER miss a land drop. T1 quarter+extraction is so disasterous to tempo that it takes a few turns to restabilize (even if you didn't mull to 5 like I stupidly did just to pull it off for a "cheap" win)
Scryb Ranger, aside from being a great card in general, her surprise factor is deadly with knight of the reliquary. got owned so much times by it. She also let's you pump the knight +4/+4 in one turn at the cost of returning a forest to your hand. with fetches of course. not many people expect it

Or, you could, I don't know, run Hate bears and the such. Teeg stops a Karn from coming down, and Thalia is pretty good against Pyroclasm.
I've pulled the Quarter extraction trick and won off of it every time. Tron is the easy matchup with that deck. The Tempo decks are a pain.

Whatever pile of 75 I throw together the night before without testing. Usually: :symb::symu::symg:
I've also seen some lists (R/G/W, also B/G/W), use KotR to go fetch up a 1 of Arena to fight creatures. The Junk version also had Urborg to help with fixing, and was running Nightshade Peddler to turn all the weenies into the deck into Arena fodder. (Swing with a lone Noble Heirarch, trigger exalted, Fight their creature, play another little creature, bond to Nightshade)
^^ I'm running BGW, but haven't used Arena yet. I like Quicksand though for the land based aggro decks.
Weathered Wayfarer is a good one as well. I run it as a 4-of for the Tron matchups. They almost always have more mana than me, so I just tutor up a Ghost Quarter and go to town blowing up their mana. My Meta had an influx of nothing but Tron decks a while back, so I started building to specifically take them out.

You are against Tron. At least grabbing Tectonic Edge or Ghost Quarter will do something for a few turns.
Your opponent has cast Day of Judgment. Turning a land into a manland or Moorland Haunt may as well be the middle finger against that deck.
At end of turn, turning lands into Cathedral of Wars or Gavony Townships turns lands into permanent pump spells (that are also worse lands).
If people aren't intimidated enough by your untapped KotR, grab a Vault of the Archangel, and this will essentially pull up a Ghostly Prison for you.
If you are desperate for cards, you can turn any land into a cantrip with Horizon Canopy.
