If you were to take a deck to a Modern GP, what deck would you take out of the following that would have a good chance of winning? Explain your choice. (Not "because it's fun")
Merfolk (Consider M13)
Hivemind
Splinter Twin
Red Deck Wins
UR Storm
Martyr White
Dragonstorm (Love this deck)
Zoo (Kird Ape rocks)
These are the only decks I would be interested in playing... UR Storm is questionable since I don't like decks with little interaction.
Merfolk, Hivemind and Martyr White could bring a surprise element to the GP.
Splinter Twin is a fun deck but is played by so many people and I just don't like playing decks everyone plays, however I'm willing to look past that if the deck itself is really good enough to win.
Merfolk is not the deck to play if you want a good chance of winning and not to play for fun like you said.
Red deck wins, hivemind and marty white are all good decks. I would go with the Hivemind deck.
Do you think Hivemind really would have a shot? It's pretty hit or miss and not as consistent as I'd like it to be.
RDW is a brainless deck (kinda like zombies in modern) but very consistent, however I'm conflicted about how well it would do in a large field even though it shows every day on MTGO.
Martyr White has a lot of bad matchups, I can see it making the top 8 but winning... meh, I'm not so sure.
I'm playing devils advocate a little cause I'm looking for someone to challenge me, it'll help in deciding.
Mmm, i dunno about merfolk being "just" a fun deck. Having the new lord of atlantis look-alike from M13 is a great improvement to the deck, maybe i would give it a try.
The surprise factor should never be underestimated.

I tried Merfolk in Modern a few months back. This is what I found; it is a bit too slow for most of the other decks. I'm not totally sure that Master of the Pearl Trident is going to change all that, although it is an amazing card. When I played vs. decks like Affinity, I felt like I was playing a deck that was a tier or 2 down from it. I literally had no chance.
Of all the decks you listed, I like Splinter Twin the best. Martyr does well in a specific meta, but otherwise is not that good a deck. RDW is vulnerable to certain decks. I don't know much of Hive Mind because although I bought the cards, I never tested it. UR Storm would be my 2nd choice, but it probably has it's vulnerabilities too (ie. Thalia). I don't know how competitive Zoo still is, but it would be my 3rd choice. Dragonstorm was my favorite deck in Standard years ago and one that I was the most successful with. However, I don't think it's good enough for Modern, currently.

I think Merfolk are good, but playing Merfolk against decks like Jund with boatloads of red removal, no islands, goyfs and finks can make it really difficult. Merfolk is also a heavy dog to affinity or RDW.
I think if you were expecting tons of Ux control, Ux tempo, or combo decks, Merfolk would be good. But modern has a lot of decks that are unfriendly to the fish.

Been testing Modern Merfolk, its still a bit rough. Pure aggro decks ala Affinity or RDW are just faster. Yet even with the controlly elements, you have to race Decks like Tron (unless you MD/SB Seas, and even then it only buys a turn or two) and Storm/Melira. Reejerey's will only get you so far AND you have to draw them.

Out of that list I'd consider Twin, Merfolk, and UR Storm ... but then I'd explain to my friends that I'm playing Steam Vents at a Modern GP and half of them would be like "Why not UW?" and the other half would be like "Why not Naya Pod?" and I'm not sure what I'd say to either argument.

I'd expect that since the last GP in Yokohama that there will be lots of Pod, Tokens, Faeries, Affinity and Ux tempo and/or control. Probably some Tron variants will show up as well.
The idea that Merfolk is too slow against the majority of decks is probably true.
I know some people will ask about Deprive and why not Cryptic Command. Well for 2 mana we get a hard counter and the land bounce doesn't hurt us in the least.
Also adding 1 Remand gives us an option instead of Mana Leak if we need to draw a card.
Splinter Twin & Others
I imagine there will be lots of Splinter Twin in the field and frankly I'm just not interested in playing 50 mirror matches, even though it is an awesome deck. The same goes for Tron, Jund, Delver Variants, Pod and Storm.
Hivemind looks fun and competitive, I just wish it was more consistent. It has never gotten better than 3rd in a paper tournament and has usually finished well below that, but has done well a few times on MTGO, getting some 4-0 and 3-1's
No joke. If you take 1st place with it, I'll mail you a bottle of champagne in thanks for making dragonstorm a recognizable deck that other people will play because it's a ****ing awesome deck.
Out of that list, I would only seriously consider Splinter-Twin and Martyr-Proc.
Competitive choice: Splinter-Twin
Personal Choice: Martyr
Splinter-Twin, along with Pod, is the only competitive combo deck in Modern right now. Hive Mind has the nice element of surprise, as a lot of people don't know what the player is doing until they actually cast the card itself.
I would personally play Martyr, as I know the deck by heart. But in the Splinter VS Martyr match-up, Twin wins 70-80% of the time.
If you're looking for a fun time, play your favorite deck. If you want to do well, go with one of those 2 decks, preferably Twin.
Merfolk is an amazing deck in Legacy, but it's too slow in Modern. What makes it so good in Legacy is the fact you have access to free counters (Daze and Force of Will).
No joke. If you take 1st place with it, I'll mail you a bottle of champagne in thanks for making dragonstorm a recognizable deck that other people will play because it's a ****ing awesome deck.
Haha, too bad it's a turn slower than UR Storm. Wait... what kind of champagne?
Personally I would take Martyr as it's my favorite of the lot, but that's not the question so it would not be my recommendation.
Instead I'd recommend Splinter Twin or Zoo as they seem to be the most consistent both with metas and with games (Twin is just a much more resilient combo than UR storm or Hivemind in my completely anecdotal experience and Zoo took a huge hit with Nacatl but it's no joke).
Would be a nice chance to test out the new Ajani and he really gives the deck a boost, especially if you get him with a 5/5 Soul's Ascendant, it gets insane.
Only reason for 2 and not 3 is I'm afraid it'll throw off the balance of the deck.
After considering some of the changes that can be made due to M13 (which is more beneficial than Merfolk), I'm leaning towards Martyr and need to decide tomorrow.
Ajani's Sunstriker could also find a play in Martyr, 2 Pridemate, 2 Sunstriker?
I wish I knew the metagame better so I could comment on the SB. I know that Suppression Field is definitely good.

That's a good question lol... umm, not really sure other than price and Warfare is fine, however figure is more flexible and can be pumped at instant speed.
I might have to make the switch.
Also Rhox Faithmender. There are some good cards in M13 with Rhox I think being one of the better, maybe as a 1-of in placement of Angel (which fight pod well).
Sublime Archangel might have to be my replacement for Mikaeus or Angel of Jubilation simple cause all my tokens got exalted, piling on the damage. She can only be a 1-of though, doesn't fit more than that.

Against Affinity we have Hurkyl's Recall.
Grafdigger's Cage and Tormod's Crypt can slow down Storm decks of the Pyromancer Ascension type.
Flashfreeze is the only real out against RDW I'd say. We also MD in 1 Kira, Great Glass-Spinner and 1 Spellskite.
My Merfolk would look something like this...
3 Mutavault
1 Aquitect's Will
4 Silvergill Adept
2 Spell Pierce
4 Cursecatcher
3 Lord of Atlantis
4 Master of the Pearl Trident
1 Coralhelm Commander
3 Mana Leak
3 Merrow Reejerey

2 Dismember
1 Spellskite
2 Vapor Snag
4 Æther Vial
2 Phantasmal Image
1 Remand

3 Flashfreeze

I saw that roaming around MTGO a few times and was like, "WTF, This dudes packing two decks in one".
SplinterStorm would definitely be out of my budget range but it's a very nice idea... definitely throws players off.

Looks like a very hard strategy for others to exploit, wow that's awesome... Splinter Twin and UR Storm rolled up in one.
