Alright. I've gotta put an end to this RG Tron hype.
Well...not really. It's a solid deck that has some excellent matchups against popular decks in game 1.
I've always felt like the problem with Tron is that it gets diluted after game 1 in having to deal with so much good hate. Unfortunately you can't just ignore the hate. And LD comes in so many different flavors; spells, enchantments, lands, etc. Over the course of four rounds, sure...it's doable.
However, over the course of 10 rounds...against so many different archetypes, each with their own way to deal with nonbasic lands (in addition to what they already mainboard)...that's a much different story. I don't play Tron, but I'd imagine that's as difficult physically as it is mentally. It'd be nice to see one break through, but like with most GP's, I think the Tron bridesmaid story repeats itself in Detriot.
At the Premier last night on MTGO, an RG Tron list got piloted to a 1st place finish over a 10 round event, beating a huge range of opponents en route to the top prize. This included a number of games versus some pretty concentrated hate including Blood Moon, Sowing Salt, Shadow of Doubt, and Ghost Quarter/Tectonic Edge. I'm not saying that this is a common performance, but it's definitely the sort of performance that can get a lot of decent pilots to Day 2.
I wasn't saying it was impossible; just an explanation for why we just don't see it crack the top 8 enough. I realize pros are used to these situations, but I could easily see myself making all sorts of sideboarding mistakes over the course of that many rounds against so many different decks. I just get the sense it's a very hard deck to navigate its full 75, and this is my psychobabble explanation for why I personally wouldn't do well with such a list in a major tournament.
Out of all the fringe-ish decks I'd expect to finally make some noise, I'm tempted to call Hatebears for a top 8. It's never outright terrible against most lists, and can transform into a solid Junk deck if necessary.

It doesn't top 8 often because not many of the pros want to play it.
They don't like it because it's a match up deck. If you get matched up vs mid range and control, you're going to have a good time. If you get matched up with combo or aggro you're going to have a bad time. It doesn't reward you with good play, it rewards you by getting paired against durdle decks.
It's not that hard to sideboard if you have experience with the deck. Cedric Phillips can sideboard in/out his 11 cards for the splinter twin match up in 3 seconds while interacting with the chat.
Just something for the OP, there is no video coverage for this GP, so no need to have the Twitch link

Pretty sure Moon still hurts them.
They still do the thing with the Cranial Platings and Glimmervoids right?
Etched Champion's guaranteed, but I'll be impressed if Affinity redshifts to optimally play alongside Moon.
Affinity has always played moon from the board. It shuts down their manlands, but that's about it, and 9x out of 10, it hurts your opponent way worse than you. Considering the deck plays opals, drums, and is mostly colorless, it's kind of a no-brainer. For what it's worth, moon doesn't stop artifact lands from being artifacts.
Blood moon is just a super powerful hate card for most of affinity's bad mathups. Against any form of control, it will often win upon resolution. Against Tron and Scapeshift, it's of course very strong as well.

My question is which deck you guys would play out of these two
Affinity or Soul Sisters (Mono W version)
Affinity. It's aggressive enough to beat decks that are trying to do unfair things.
Soul Sisters has some strong sideboard cards, but it doesn't close out games very quickly and that becomes a problem when you don't have many ways to interact with an opponent who is doing unfair things.
Soul Sisters is just a plain bad matchup against Affinity. You can't punch through because Affinity is just too fast. You end up on the defensive right away, and while you can hold them off for a bit, you'll never be able to turn the tables unless they screw up (or get screwed in terms of draw).
But Soul Sisters is still a top deck that holds its own most other matchups.

Soul sisters hasn't done a thing in months and has a ton of terrible matchups against the field. I would hardly say it's a top deck.
I've got nothing against it, but the fact that it's pretty bad against against UWR control, Pod, Affinity, and Tron while having it's best matchups against tier 2 decks really doesn't cut it in the format.

I'm extremely new to modern - as in the only modern I've ever played is playtesting the past couple of weeks - but my friends are dragging me along to the GP. NATURALLY, I plan to play R/B burn and scrub out.
Right now my board looks like this:
2 Rain of Gore - in addition to the 3 MD skullcrack, for various lifegain decks. Could be swapped for 2 Ensnaring Bridge if I end up worried about aggro more than Revelation/Finks after looking around on Friday
1 Searing Blaze - to complement the 3 in MD if I need it
4 Rakdos Charm - Affinity, Graveyard
3 Smash to Smithereens - Affinity
2 Torpor Orb - For pod and various other decks
3 Volcanic Fallout - aggro
I've played a lot of Legacy burn but unfortunately, I'm very unfamiliar with the modern meta or what the meta might be at GP Detroit, so this thread seems like a great place to ask for sideboard advice. Blood Moons? Back to Nature? What decks should I be afraid of in Modern?
YMTC: We need a spikey red enchantment. My creations:
RR
Whenever a player taps a nonbasic land, [Card] deals 2 damage to them.
-or-
R
Whenever a player would gain life, flip a coin. If heads, that player loses that much life instead. If tails sacrifice [card] and that player gains that life as per usual.
Yeah, I've been reading that thread, too, but I don't see why this isn't a good place to ask more people and non-burn players about the current modern meta.
It is always helpful to get an idea of your main deck as well as the sb to get a pictre of your whole deck, but just from the sideboard:
3 volcanic fallout- you already have a great anti aggro plan se to all that burn, I would cut those for 3 molten rain as they are super clutch in the tron, urw control match ups to hit key non basics.
The rest of the sb looks okay, but again to make ideal b suggestions a list of whats in the md already is helpful.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

It's actually been known for a while. It was never on Wizards schedule, but no reason given other than the fact that they don't broadcast every GP
