Zoo? no. Jackel pup hasnt seen play in legacy zoo since around... 8th edition. So This guy's probably not going to cut it. gruul zoo (if they needed a 2 power) will play loam lion. The unconditonal big butt is important. (We like dodging red sweepers)
I think there is a deck to be made around Purphoros + Demigod of Revenge. The Demigod activates Purphoros' devotion requirement by himself, plus has the potential to activate multiple ETB triggers if there are some Demigods in the graveyard.
On a naked board containing only Purphoros, you could play one Demigod, trigger for 2 dmg, and then swing for 11 for a 13 point hasty swing. Add on Demigod in the yard and it goes to 20.
I think the best shell is R/B control, with multiple discard and removal effects. Liliana seems pretty amazing in the deck, being able to control the board a bit and discard Demigods for future use. Deathrite and Ooze obviously hate on the graveyard, but I don't think you need multiples to win, that is just gravy when it happens.

Actually seems like a Dega deck to me. You want Lingering Souls with Purphoros. This gets you path and helix as well. Not to mention unburial rights for more Demigod Shenanigans.

No idea because my favorite decks keep getting banned or having the rules changed against them

FYI, Demigod only triggers on cast, sorry bro. Probably still not a bad synergy between Purphoros and any of the black Spirit Avatars.

Right, I was saying if you cast one Demigod of Revenge, trigger it's ETB and possibly get more Demigods from the graveyard, and each of those Demigods would trigger Purphoros's ETB trigger.

That's a great point about Lingering Souls. This isn't a deck that needs to build up towards devotion because the Demigod would do it all at once, so using tokens is a great way to trigger Purphoros and make his pumping ability relevant.

Sorry misread, was thinking of the black god for some reason. I really shouldn't post when I am tired.
That is a great synergy and I agree with the lingering souls suggestion. Probably a RWb tokens deck.
Sure, no PainterStone with RE/PyroBlast shenanigans in this format, but someone out there might be interested in turning their 2cmc white-hating white spell into super Vindicates on the cheap. My idea? Pack it all into a Mono White Control list.

Mistcutter Hydra tries to be Modern-playable again, but you're stuck sinking 5 mana into it to make it evade Bolt. Yes, it's uncounterable, and yes, it has Haste and protection from blue, but will those be enough or will Mikaeus, the Lunarch outdo it?
...And Steam Augury is finally confirmed. Let the debates continue.

I think haste would have been enough to see some fringe play if nothing else. Having options in cards turns things that are sub-optimal into extremely playable(see: charms). And a 4/4 haste for 5 isn't terrible. Neither is a 2/2 haste for 3. Or any such other possibility(save for 1/1 for 2, that's never worthwhile).
And then the blue hate on top of it, definitely enough to see play somewhere...probably.
-Dies to Smother
-Dies to Abrupt Decay
-Dies to EE for 1 and Ratchet Bomb for 1
-Oh yeah, it dies to Doom Blade and Go for the Throat too, and basically anything else.
-Still gets stolen by Shackles, since there will almost always be at least the same Island count as the X value for this thing
In all seriousness, I don't think Mistcutter Hydra is Modern-playable. It seems worse than Vengevine a lot of the time.
Of course, Vengevine is only ever cheated into play, but think about it: if you're playing a fair deck and won't even touch Vengevine, why would you go near Mistcutter Hydra?
Hydra has got to fnd a home somewhere, blue is just a little to prevalent in modern these days. Hydra has is low commitment but scales into late game just fine. It cannot be bounced or countered. I picture it in a GB rock-like shell, with heavy board control via Abrupt Decay and Maelstrom, Liliana and Garruk, mana ramp and finks - Garruk pumps up hydra to finish the job.
In competitive terms GR Zoo is probably the best hyper-aggressive creature deck like that, and kird ape / guide / ex one seem better than the saytr
Why wouldnt you play deathrite shaman in a shaman deck?

Land in particular I am not the best at figuring out, this is just a first shot. I am sure there is a lot of tuning that could be done.
Painter's Servant is Modern legal.
Let that sink in for a moment.

I see your Glare of Heresy and raise you a Celestial Purge and a Devout Lightcaster. Just name Black with Painter's Servant instead.
WHY DOES THIS EXIST???????
...And Steam Augury is finally confirmed. Let the debates continue.
FWIW, it has haste.
Haste means it's a green fireball.
Well, kinda.
Sort of.
Not really.
You get what I mean, though.
Pick one:
- Doesn't die to Bolt
- Uncounterable
(see also: Skylasher, Troll Ascetic)
It's only when you get to mythics that you see both on a card (Thrun).

a regeneration ability would've been nice on Mistcutter like on TA:p
