Aaaand game over. For all the talk of Splinter Twin it was, unsurprisingly, Birthing Pod that dominated the GP.
So what just happened? Why did Brian Liu just auto-win when he played Kiki-Jikki?
Fairly certain he had a Restoration Angel on the board. He brought in Kiki, targets the Angel, angel tokens enters the battlefield, blinks Kiki, Kiki enters untapped. Repeat an arbitrarily large number of times and attack with arbitrarily large number of hasty flying 3/4 tokens.

had an exarch. sacced the angel to get kiki, then just copied the exarch.
Still a pretty healthy meta overall, I'd say. Vanilla top 8s like this tend to emerge after long tournaments where rogue builds have to run through a gauntlet of proven decks with a lot of play to them. Pod did dominate in the end, but I'm not convinced that the meta is remotely settled enough to say it warrants a ban. Unlike Jund, there's plenty of ways you can hate out Pod decks (Torpor Orb, library search hate) and plenty of decks that have good matchups against them (Tron, Death + Taxes).
Chord of Calling is the card I would put on the watch list (for potential banhammer).
I'm glad Pod won. I'm selling everything I have for the deck at SCG Seattle. I wouldn't doubt that Chord or Pod is being closely watched for certain now, after this showing.

I think that was game two. Game 3 he used Chord of Calling to search out Kiki.
don't anyone ever call for an affinity ban, it's easier to hate out of the format easier than graveyard strategies by every single color/deck in modern that needs to. Its a bad matchup for merfolk but I'd never call for something to get banned unless they printed something new that put it over the top.
Was Liu the only person in the tournament who does not shuffle cards in his hand like a psycho? And there you go, he was rewarded for it! I hate this habit with a passion.

LOL I didn't notice that until you just pointed that out. Maybe all those people who shuffle their cards like that are OCD?

There are actually some legitimate reasons for it, but more often than not it's just habit copying. The best reason for it is to hide your draws or any known cards if they've seen your hand or bounced something. It's usually just something to occupy your hands while you're waiting or thinking, like twirling a pen through your fingers. If you hate it that much, this is likely a bad hobby for you to be in.

There is also the fact that sometimes seeing the cards in a different order can reveal lines of play you may not have seen otherwise. Think of it as getting a fresh perspective.
Death & Taxes doesn't have a good Pod matchup.
Yes, Mindcensor and Arbiter are hate cards against Chord/Pod. That doesn't translate to some matchup where the D&T deck is incredibly dominating.
Your hate cards are terrible 2/1s and terrible 2/2s. Pod just takes out all their Chords, most (if not all) of the Pods, plays better creatures than you, and brings in more removal. This is what happens, time and time again, with competent Pod players.
P.S. Smart players always crack their fetches ASAP against D&T to minimize damage by Aven/Arbiter, too. If they just hold them back, they get rolled by cards they should see from a mile away.
EDIT2: For the player who asked why did the Kiki Pod player not play a Phantasmal Image -- probably because it was largely used to kill Olivia/Geist/other Legends before the Legend rule change, he needed a slot for a 2nd Ooze & didn't know what to cut, and because he's already playing 4 copies of Restoration Angel, so he didn't necessarily need the Image as a redundant combo piece.
Huh, so Faeries made it into the Top 16? Interesting.
The meta sure does look more interesting when you expand to the Top 16...
I'm not all that familiar with Modern Faeries...is that a normal list? It seems really odd with cards like Tragic Slip and...not really many actual Faeries.

Looks like the typical UB Faerie deck in Modern, yup.

Not happy pod won, but was a well played final.
