Shuffle it once when you draw. That's legit. Shuffling for the sake of looking like the biggest douche in the world is .... well douchy. Usually I just slap the opponent and they stop. I tried slapping LSV, but it did not work over the internet. LOL
Interesting, the guy on UB Faeries is someone I know: Alex Sittner. He owns Oasis Games in Salt Lake City. Awesome guy.
I'm really surprised that Kiki-Pod deck isn't running any copies of Phantasmal Image either, as well as only 1 Exarch. Ooze seems like it's required these days; hadn't seen it in Kiki-Pod until now. Also haven't seen Thragtusk or Avalanche Riders in the board before. The single Murderous Redcap in the main is curious as well.

I'm sure that the Kiki-Pod deck is running a deck that isn't all-in on the combo and can be a bit more of a mid-range goodstuff.dec so that it can compete when it doesn't combo out.
As far as the guy that owns the shop in Salt Lake City - Do they do much Modern/Legacy there? (:

Was Liu the only person in the tournament who does not shuffle cards in his hand like a psycho? And there you go, he was rewarded for it! I hate this habit with a passion.
My 13 year old son can't shuffle a sleeved deck, but he thinks he's Gambit with seven cards in his hand.
Everyone's talking about Round 9 Dickmann's match against Blue Moon, and in the replay of SCG's Twitch the match cuts at game 2 when Patrick untaps with Thrun. Where can I find the whole match?
Well, it's way late now, but I lost my deck at the GP day one, just before Round 7 started. Unfortunately, the more I think about it, it's entirely possible that the deck was filched from my pocket during the rush of bodies from the pairings list to my table. For those curious, here's the list of the stuff I lost. It was in one of the Ultra Pro psuedo-leather Black Mana Symbol boxes, double-sleeved with KMC Mat Blacks and Perfect Fits.

Avalanche Riders is pretty common in Kiki-Pod actually (I've played Kiki Pod on and off for over the 14 months). Great against Tron/Control/Midrange. Sowing Salt isn't a creature, so it's not tutorable in this deck. Also, early acceleration into a Riders (whether played early or tutored), followed by Restoration Angel-ing it in response to the trigger, or Kiki-Jiki-ing it the next turn, can lock up a game against many decks it's good against. You can't do that with Sowing Salt. You generally don't care about taking all the copies of a land in play in most instances outside of the Tron matchup, either.
Thragtusk is less common in Kiki-Pod decks, because most of the time Sigarda is taking up its slot. Now that Jund isn't as popular, Thragtusk is becoming more popular. I remember seeing it in Kiki-Pod decks last PTQ season on occasion - sometimes even in multiples in the 75, based on meta considerations.
Deceiver isn't always a 2-of. Usually Pod decks with the full playset of Restos cut an Exarch because it's not good at attacking compared to Angel. Since Exarch isn't good at attacking, and presumably, Liu understood there'd be more Twin hate then in previous seasons (as Jund is less viable, so Twin is more popular), he played the 4th Angel over the 2nd Exarch to strengthen his backup plan of midrange beats vs. combo-ing off. The only downside to eliminating the 2nd Exarch is it changes the availability of certain Pod chains, really.
I would really like to see a breakdown of the day 1 meta. I don't suppose they've posted that information? I couldn't find it.
They haven't, and they won't. Too much work. I mean, we are talking about 4500 deck lists they'd have to go over.
Yeah, I get that it's a lot of work, but that information is pretty important to people trying to run numbers on the metagame. The numbers just from day 2 won't accurately reflect what the metagame looked like as a whole.
I'm not too familiar with GPs, do they destroy the decklists or keep promise to keep them secret?
If not, I'm sure they could just scan the decklists and put them on-line and let the community compile the data for the meta. They wouldn't have to do any work except scan the documents.

I don't think Wizards wants the decklists public. They stopped publishing all the MTGO 4-0/3-1 daily wins back in October 2012 for a similar reason, and I imagine that the same logic would prevent them from giving us this data. That said, the recent in-depth analyses of PT Valencia and the very detailed GP Day 2 metagame breakdown might mark a turning point in that pattern, but given Wizards' track record, I am doubtful.
There's also this video, which I think was some stuff they showed on Friday.
Note that they're completely unorganized (it's just the unedited stream, including all of the replays), so you might have to do a lot of clicking around to find the parts you want to see. For example, the last 8 hours or something of the Day 1 video are just a bunch of replays they showed after the first 9 rounds ended.

I'm really disappointed with that top 8. I was really hoping for more variety, given how cool the metagame has been on MTGO and at PT Valencia and such lately.

*Insert giant block of annoying garbage that no one cares about but you have to scroll past anyway here*
even though the tournament was diverse, as shown by the numbers, the top 8, and even the top 16 wasn't that diverse. goes to show you can't just look at top 8 or top 16, though that is better than looking just at who won. it just goes to show that decks that have resiliency and a potential insta-win are the way to go.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
People have long stated how poor they felt UWx Control was in the format. It's no surprise to see it on the decline. And when it's on the decline, everyone brings out combo decks. Pod and Twin are just very solid decks in a random meta, and it shows quite a bit. The top 8 was basically just Pod, a Twin, and Affinity. Affinity is just a good deck to bring to a large tournament because the games go fairly quickly and the deck is still just very solid against almost any deck. I would have expected to see some sort of UWx deck in the top 8 though, and probably another Twin instead of so much Pod.
UWx sucks vs combo decks. It plays a bunch of burn spells which are terrible vs combo or 4 toughness creatures.
The cards that are good against combo are thoughtseize, liliana, and scavenging ooze. Sadly those cards are pretty terrible vs affinity.
UWr control has to draw incredibly well. It has a lot of answers, but there's no manipulation to draw any of those answers. That's why you should play 4 snapcasters in non combo decks, since it'll usually flash back a relevant spell.

The top 8 isn'treally the metagame. We really have to look at all of the decks on day 1 to get a good look at what's being played and have a good understanding of the numbers at this event. Sure, there were 5 Birthing Pod decks in the top 8. The Pod deck in the minority took the win, so what does that mean?
I was a huge fan of Chapin's commentary throughout the tournament.
Related note: Does anyone know where I can find Chapin's next-level Modern seminar he gave at Richmond? They streamed parts of it during the ten-minute in-between rounds periods during the tournament. It looked like a cool talk but I only got to see about ten minutes of it.

You may be able to get away with that crap at your LGS, but I think it's important for everybody with silly pet peeves to realize that quite a few MTG players practice at least one martial art and aren't afraid to prove it. Get into a pissing match with the wrong guy and you could very quickly regret your inability to ignore an innocent thing.
I only watched the final. But I noticed what a great commentator/host Chapin was in that short amount of time, he completely blew everyone else out of the water.
Does anyone know if any Jund decks appeared on camera, or what the best scoring Jund deck was?
