Yes but it's fairly budget compared to most 'competitive' modern decks. It's also very resilient to counters and discard. Lastly, it doesn't require the graveyard to win if you have a natural ETW in hand so it can avoid gravehate (which I believe is the most popular way to keep it in check). Overall, it's a decent deck that is underestimated and people enjoy playing that is playable without fetches (which makes the most expensive card in the deck what... ~$5?).
The punchline - People will be playing it there.

Judging from the articles on all the major sites, the pros at least are going to be amply prepared for Storm, Twin, Amulet, and all the other combo decks. Given that most players tend to follow the pro lead, I am expecting that many GP Richmond attendees will be more than ready to handle these decks. Expect to see lots of Storm day 1 and a massive drop off for day 2. I bet we see 1 in the T16 but no more.
There is an insane amount of Storm in MTGO right now. Like, ridiculous. And I must say, the deck feels quite broken sometimes, if only because they ONLY have to get 2 simple counters on the ascension to win 99% of the time. That annoys me to no end, because I can never interact with a resolved Ascension. GRRRRRRR.
I've been playing Modern for quite a long time and I remember the Storm spam on modo before the Seething Song ban. I played RUG Delver at that time so I completely destroyed combo decks like that, and I'm even thinking of going back to it. Seems incredibly well positioned right now
So as of 4 hours ago, 4100. Thats pretty big. It would need about 300 more to tie for tops, Dunno who wouldnt register online and wait til fri with these numbers ticking up. I'm assuming its peeked... But hey, I could be super wrong.
Edit: Just reminding everyone, stream doesnt start until Sat. Not tomorrow/today. thats just registration.
Such a huge amount of people. This GP is going to show us more than the pro tour, I think. Since it's purely modern with no draft to dilute things, and it's got an insane amount of people playing, the vast majority of which have lower skill levels than the pro tour players, so the deck will be more important. I'm hoping for a diverse top 8 like the pro tour, hoping to see the following archetypes top 8:
- Jund (show us you're far from death and make people respect you again!)
- Zoo (definitely needs to top 8, come on wild nacatl just got unbanned, show us what you got!)
- Merfolk (you can do it, I believe in you)
- Gifts control (because UWR is incredibly boring and only having one control deck is unsatisfactory)
I don't think anyone ever wants a focused top8. Everyone wants diversity, and everyone wants to see new(or very old) stuff. Though it is a tad different, as Modern is the only format where so few want to see 'their' deck making it to too many top8s(because suddenly banhammers).
Me? I just want good games. I thought the Valencia top8 was pretty fun to watch. Games were long and relatively close, with good play and very few significant RNG issues(mana floods and whatnot) outside of the finals...but those were BO5 so more forgiving.

I'd say that the one problem with the Valencia Top 8 was the Storm/Melira Pod game 1. Watching Storm fizzle wasn't fun. Watching it succumb to disruption was okay though (and I would have loved to see it combo off...).
I would love to see Merfolk make a top appearance. It definitely is strong enough to be able to. It can outrace the sweepers that so many decks are hoping to keep aggro in line as well as Kira for the spot removal. I would love to see these decks do well:
Tempo Twin (I just love the deck, it's fun and we know it's going to do well)
Jund (It's not dead yet!)
Merfolk (Powerhouse it baby!)
Zoo (I want a non-blue aggro deck to show that blue isn't necessary in this format!)
Pod (We know it's going to happen whether we want it to or not)
Burn (With all the rising prices, it would be fun to see a budget deck near the top)
Scapeshift (I have no reasoning, just that I haven't seen it top anything big in a while)
UWr Midrange/Control (I like this color pie more than anything else in any format. Sorry - Bias)
I just don't think Gifts Control can do it.

Storm will not do as well this time around. I love the deck but it's success is cyclical and this is the down swing part. Zoo would be slightly better as people will be geared to beat Pod/Twin/UWR. BG decks could see an up tick if they build for the new meta and not the old. I would also expect better grave hate for this event. Which will hamstring Living End/Tin Fins/Storm enough that they won't be as successful. Really pumped to see the brews that a field this size is bound to produce.

In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.
While Richmond is shaping up to be possibly the largest GP of all time, there are many of us that will be unable to attend. That doesnt stop us from considering what we wouldve played to break the meta! What deck and tech would you have brought with you to Richmond, and why?
1) I own the deck
2) I dont want to go to time in large events
3) Strong proactive game plan strong in a diverse format (especially without byes)
4) I feel advantaged vs kiki pod/boggles/traditional mirror/scapeshift/storm/burn. I feel at least even vs affinity/UWR/twin/melira pod/big zoo. I struggle against speed zoo/living end.
5) Versatile Sideboarding Options
I'm merging this whole thread with the GP Richmond discussion. It sets a bad precedent for making new threads about the event when we intentionally just made one thread to centralize conversation

I completely agree with the storm cyclical pattern. It seems to happen in every eternal format with whatever the format 'boogieman' is.

What are we looking at for rounds? 14-16? I a going to play something I know, that is not going to give me a headache to play all day. Probably Affinity/bots. I dont want a deck where I am going to be playing long every round and possibly into extra turns. I want a deck that allows for a little down time in between rounds.
I would probably be playing my modern pet deck! Merfolk of course. I have a unique take on the archetype and I think it's shaping up to do extremely well against the meta with so much mainboard hate against many of the popular decks in the format:
that's what should happen. instead, they'll probably ban something from it before the cycle really establishes itself.
I doubt this. So far, none of the Modern bans have been aimed at preventing cycles. They have been aimed at breaking up consistent, longrunning hegemonies. That's why something like Pod has so far dodged a ban, as with Twin, and why Wizards keeps aiming their bans at Jund.
Honestly, Storm should not do well at this event. Everyone is ready for it both in their sideboards and in their deck choice period. Twin is another matter; I expect to see at least 1 RUG Twin in the T8, and at least 2-3 Twin decks of some kind in the T16.
UR twin or Pod because I haven't been doing well with Scapeshift and Twin is my favourite combo deck but I just started playing Pod and could use the practice.

Kai Budde and Jon Finkel played it in the Pro Tour.
That's really all you need to know. It will be played in large quantities.
Standard: lol no
Modern: BG/x, UR/x, Burn, Merfolk, Zoo, Storm
Legacy: Shardless BUG, Delver (BUG, RUG, Grixis), Landstill, Depths Combo, Merfolk
Vintage: Dark Times, BUG Fish, Merfolk
EDH: Teysa, Orzhov Scion / Krenko, Mob Boss / Stonebrow, Krosan Hero
Finkel Top 16'd with it shortly after the Seething Song ban (I can't remember if it was a PT or a GP). It didn't get played more.
Of course, that tournament didn't have nearly as much coverage or hype as PTBNG did.
