This is the official thread for discussing M15 cards in relation to Modern. Remember to keep your posts constructive and well-reasoned. Posts like "lol broken in Pod" will be considered spam and warned/infracted accordingly.
The card that most jumps at me now is Quickling. That looks like it has a lot of synergy in Faeries. I like what they are trying to do with Goblin Rabblemaster, but a) I don't see why they need to "fix" Piledriever, and b) he just won't pass the Modern cut.
Void Snare is going to make a splash in some eternal combo decks. Since you do not need to bounce at instant speed most of the time, it will work well. Military Intelligence I like too thought I do not know how much play it will see. Personally, the card I like the most is Cruel Sadist, great name, poor effect. But I can not wait for the art.
Oh god, I did not notice him. Oh dam Elves just got a hell of a boost. WOW.
Elves got a tool, sure, but not a huge boost unless they can bounce it and replay it easy.
Reclamation Sage is boosting Pod. Its the same Cmc as harmonic sliver, but better mana requirements. Oh and it's got a better power. No, pod loves it alot more than any other random deck Of course pod likes anything. Thats why the deck is so stupid good.
Military Intelligence has potential as an engine card in a token deck. It comes down early (same CMC as Pyromancer Ascension, for comparison). On the other hand it also seems like a win-more card: Tokens is already known for its CA (1 token generating card makes anywhere from 2-4 tokens), so it doesn't really need so much extra CA (that is dependent upon them having CA in the first place).
Quickling: Does Faeries want this card? Tribal synergy is one thing but Snapcaster looks better 80% of the time. Not to mention Faeries is kinda light on creatures.
Void Snare is an interesting one. It's Disperse at one less mana but at sorcery speed. Combo decks won't use it over Echoing Truth; if you cast it on your turn then you have to combo off on the same turn (hard to do, since Void Snare already consumes 1 of your available mana, meaning you have less resources), while if you don't combo off then your opponent will just replay his hate. In a fair deck the closest comparison is Vapor Snag, which only sees play in Merfolk, Delver and Blue Moon. Ultimately I think that Snag being an instant (and the 1 life loss) outweighs Snare's ability to bounce anything - those decks do have counterspells to deal with non-creature spells, and Snag being instant also means that you don't have to commit to one option (between bouncing a guy vs holding up mana for counters - with Void Snare, if you choose to hold up mana to counter something then you can't bounce and vice versa).
Necromancer's Assistant is another card for Dredge, with a reasonable body to boot. Plus it's a Zombie, so it enables Gravecrawler. There already is Shambling Shell, which seldom gets played, but Assistant mills 3 on ETB while Shell mills 3 only if you can get it into your graveyard first.
Goblin Rabblemaster is Goblin Assault + Goblin Piledriver (at 3 CMC, without pro-blue, and with a smaller boost). Sadly the fact that it forces your other Goblins to make suicidal attacks means it won't make the cut. Goblin Assault and Hellraiser Goblin have already shown us that.
Reclamation Sage is an improvement over both Harmonic Sliver and Viridian Shaman. Needless to say we know what change Pod will make after M15.
Genesis Hydra is a nice boost for Mono-Green Devotion. It's reasonable to cast at both low and high values of X and triggers upon casting, not ETB.
Paragons are...urgh. In a deck that wants anthems they'd like it to be either less than 4 mana or not die to removal. Besides, Hall of Triumph didn't make any impact so it's even less likely that the Paragons do.
Ulcerate is interesting but I doubt it's better than Disfigure.
Chasm Skulker is potentially powerful as well. It's something to watch because you get value off of it as long as it isn't killed immediately. Kind of a shame there aren't better cantrips to enable him.

For one U mana this card has potential to see play in Modern and Legacy. Vapor Snag is awesome but this card can push bounce tough Planeswalkers, Artifacts and Enchantments. Echoing Truth, Into the Roil and Boomerang are better as Instants but at one mana Void Snare is pretty good. Now will G see a 1 mana Giant Growth with Trample and First Strike. R get a RR mana 4 damage no draw back Burn. B get a one mana Sorcery -4/-4 and W get a 2 mana uncounterable removal.
That is why I hope the never bring Phyrexian mana back or at least tweak it heavily. Dismember shows why it's such a poor mechanic. The card is as black as it can get both from flavor and effect and yet it is playable in literally any deck because of phyrexian mana and it makes the spell only technically a 3 cmc spell but in practice it's a 1 cmc spell that makes you lose 4 life.
Spoilers are not really exciting. It was probably a good idea that I quitted Standard to get into Modern. Cards like Flesh to Dust, Covenant of Blood and Military Intelligence make it clear that they want you to play creature heavy decks. I know only 38 cards are spoiled so far but pretty much all the cards that are spoiled point in that direction right now.
I hope it changes as more spoilers get released.
Yeah, I don't know why anyone would want Ulcerate over Dismember. Even in Dismember's "worst" mode, as a 1 instant that costs 4 life, it still blasts for -5/-5 instead of -3/-3 and still only costs 1 less life. Add to that Dismember's versatility from 1-3 CMC and you have a card that is just "better" than Ulcerate in pretty much every situation.
Oh god, I did not notice him. Oh dam Elves just got a hell of a boost. WOW.

What about for Zoo? I think Zoo could use a creature like this in the sideboard.

I dunno. We'd rather it be 3/1 but yeah, its playable. just wed rather have our bears be 2 mana. So pridemage will win out.
Does the new goblin piledriver give goblins any hope of resurgence? Goblin Rabblemaster could easily replace Shared Animosity in goblin decks as a finisher, without being a dead draw when you have no creatures.
and it makes dudes!
I think waste not will be in those decks. Dark confidant is what they use now for draw, this helps em out. Proabably go a bit higher on the funeral charms, cut the confidants
(Yes, this is going to get alot of the guys in 8rack who dont like confidant upset, but all the guys I've seen on big paper events run him.)
I thought the goblin was insanely good until I realized that your goblins had to attack every turn, now he's not so good.
Ulcerate is a bad dismember and even a worse vendetta most of the time. Triplicate spirits might see play in tokens, but I doubt it since it's 100% a win more card.
Honestly the only thing exciting about m15 so far (as far as modern is concerned) is waste not.
Am I the only one thanking god that Siege Dragon costs 7 mana? Talk about a ridiculous card.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
I actually have some hope in one of those planar Soul cards doing something dumb and busted.
Granted, the two currently shown are kinda meh in powerlevel (and even then there's like a massive disconnect in power between RavSoul letting you draw cards provided you're rainbow enough, and ZenSoul just giving you a flimsy 3/3 token), so I shouldn't get my hopes up for, say, a Black soul card that does reanimator trickery...
...it'd probably just be "target player discards a card" with some multiplier modifier like how RavSoul draws cards according to your rainbowness...
It's probably worth mentioning I only care because I've recently become enamored with Gifts Ungiven and this is an opportunity to put the double Entomb trick to more use than just Unburial Rites + fatty.
Triplicate Spirits seems close to being used in B/W Tokens, but its just not quite there.I do think that Triplicate Spirits could possibly replace Spectral Procession in Soul Sisters, but that too is unlikely
Void Snare seems playable. Especially in combo decks that need an enchantment/ artifact gone for a turn.
Waste Not should see play in Mono-Black discard

You're right about Ulcerate, but Triplicate Spirits is a strictly worse Spectral Procession for BW Tokens, unless they were going for redundancy or something but at that mana cost I doubt it. And yes, that dragon is going to be nice in EDH.
Edit: Derp. Totally missed the convoke. But still probably worse than procession since they'd have to tap out their board to do it.

Its sorcery speed, so it kills it. Id be alright if it was WW2 instant. You could attack with your team when virtue is out, then tap at end of turn or during blocks. at ww4 you need to tap 4 to make it better than possession, and leave yourself open. Its a no go.
I thought about Ulcerate and made a post a post about it in the rumor mill but I will repost my opinion about it here too.
If you wouldnt lose life the card would definitely be played in Modern since there is no 1 cmc black removal spell that feels really great. I currently play two Disfigure in my Faeries deck and that would instantly be replaced by the version that does -3/-3 for B. Not hitting players would be a fair deal since black is firstly not about that and secondly -x/-x effects hose regeneration and indestructibility which shouldn't be forgotten.
But with the life loss it's worse and you have to compare it then to Dismember and Vendetta and it doesn't look that great when compared to those spells.
It's sad since this was the perfect chance to make a 1 cmc black removal spell that can stand besides Lightning Bolt and Path to Exile but they didn't use it.
I mean it will likely see standard play and maybe a bit of modern play but not as much as it could have seen.
I think the problem is that
-they decided to be flavorfully Black in a time when Dismember already existed
-they felt they couldn't just invalidate Disfigure straight up like that
Ulcerate just came to existence at the wrong time...
