Thanks, I missed those. That is fine if you are expecting a lot of Thrun or something, but when is he going to be able to tap out and resolve Wrath against Delver? Verdict is clearly the choice there.
I still think 4x DTT is weird with the way the rest of the deck is built.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
I would love to watch some of the modern but once again Wizards appear to have crapped the bed with their coverage, only got vintage masters draft up in past broadcasts.
Willy plays thoughtseize. Black spreads his hand. Willy slaps pod out of it. It spins across the table into his grave yard. All in a single motion.
That is the most pimp slapped thing Ive seen in magic to date.
"Get that weak ***** off my playmat."
lol, but for real. Willy vs Black, Rock vs Pod talk about the best players at the deck repping.
I've never been too impressed with Sam Blacks piloting of Pod. Every time I have ever seen him play it he has treated it as a combo deck that sometimes wins on the board which is completely backwards to how others treat it. Maybe his playstyle with the deck has changed though, I don't remember him posting any content with it in the past year.
I'm disappointed from the low Uwr conrol/midrange presence.
All went for Ur delver or Ascendancy letting behind perfect strong decks like Uwr control and mid, Affinity or Twin. This Modern wolrd cup looks like a testing field to me

I think UWR Control (I am not counting McLaren's trainwreck) would have done well here, especially with Geist in the SB.

I think we can safely choose to infer very little from the metagame here - the deck choices look like the players are trying to counter deck choices they believe will appear at the event, rather than a deck that could be played in a wide open event. I mean, when was the last time we say UR Pyro storm with this %?

That about sums up my feelings of Worlds. Sadly, I'm sure the ban maniacs will be out in force for the rest of the week, wildly extrapolating from the results of this isolated and anomalous event.
Again. In a small scale event like this with a million formats its smarter to play proactive combo deck rather than test out the modern meta strenuously since its only 4ish rounds. I wouldnt look too hard into this meta.
Back from work and watching the replays... Jesus, some appaling mistakes on camera.
Jesus Christ, PV played awfully on camera against turtenwald. Both games, his hand full of disruption that could buy him enough time to go off on a single turn, he decides to just plop the Ascendancy on the field, playing against storm, a deck that can easily go off undisrupted on turn 3. Of course, both times, it cost him the game.
It's even worse because recently Turtenwald was mouthing off on Twitter how it must be nice to be brazilian and get easily qualified for Worlds, and PV kinda proved he's really not at that level in that match. Tom Martell also made a rookie mistake with him passing priority before remanding the manamorphose copy. i'd quite like to see someone playing that CFB Ascendancy deck perfectly to see how it matches up against other combo decks in the format.

The Wizards website sucks so bad. Takes forever to load and lags my MTGS tab too. I'll do you guys a favor and paste the JA decklist here so you don't have to put up with that crap.
Like seriously, how is this deck winning any game 1s? Attacking with Fatestitcher and Faerie Conclave?
Is this how the deck is supposed to work? You get a bunch of Conclaves on the battlefield, or Stitchers in the yard, animate them, cast one or two spells, and swing with a team of 3/3s or so? Cause that's not combo, dude.
P.S. Don't ask me to update the JA primer with this decklist. It's not a combo deck. Start your own thread called Jeskai Ascendancy Control or Jeskai Ascendancy Tempo if you want to.
I think most people in this thread somehow missed the first round of Modern, where Wrapter on JA beat Sam Black on Pod in 2 games. It was still the middle of game 2 when Chapin and Shenhar finished their 3 games (though UR Delver and Burn are both fast) and still took a long time to win. However, Sam barely had a chance. After that match Sam Black tweeted that Wrapter and his team "broke" the JA archetype with that deck.
I'm far more inclined to take the opinion of Team Fireball and Sam Black that anyone on here commenting on the viability of decks.
well said^
however all the modern versions of JA seem so unnecessarily convoluted or complex (this one the least of these...) but still why not just jam Swiftspear's, goblin guides, delvers, YPyro's or whatever value creature you like and crank out a bunch of spells and win (granted I have only fish bowled the original build a few times as far as my experience goes with the deck too:)...for what its worth the SB'ered looks like a blast!

In a format where T-Seize, Duress, and Liliana of the Veil are real problems, maintaining a hand throughout the game would be hard. Modern's removal package is so good that keeping a board presence is hard, so they rely on creatures that are either hard to remove (Lands) or can pop in at a moment's notice (Fatestiticher).

not going to argue your point, only that every deck in the format has to work with or around all those spells(and many more) too and still have a game plan too...haste, hex proof, and man lands are nice...I mean look at Delver decks with a bunch of seeming vulnerable creatures(and they only run what 12ish) and make it work....many of those don't even run many counters....not trying to argue, just a counterpoint;)

You realise the win rate for storm on turn 3 is like 20% right?
Paulo took a calculated risk. The odds of him having a turn 3 kill 2 games in a row is Less than 10%.
That ascendancy deck is the real deal. Half their losses were to Storm. Which is not popular, and can go off faster. And its INSANELY hard to play.
I wouldnt be surprised if it was broken. It is super strong.
