Not to bounce to far off topic...but I wish I could somehow get my wife to play MTG (if only there was a potion or a spell I could find/use to make it happen).

Oh SNAP.
Can't get much further from MTG, lol. I am lucky my wife likes to play.
I'm trying to use pokemon to get my Finacee into card games. So far so good, maybe if she likes the game she would give it a try?
I can't wait to see what a real meta looks like. It's sad, but I really hope that the BGx core doesn't do too well. While I don't play Junk or Jund, I still play Liliana+Discard+Decay, so I tend to worry a bit.
Noooooo I'll be in Vancouver over that weekend for the exact opposite reasons of playing Magic! Anyways, I expect the meta to be pretty different from the PT. Expect at least another Amulet Bloom in the top 8, and a lot of Twin. Atleast 2 of it.
what are the exact opposite reasons of playing magic? Are you running around the city burning magic cards and detaining nerds?
dating?
don't be silly.
have to admit that beeing sillly was exactly the point
We are up to 600 pregistrations for the GP. I'm not actually sure what an expected ratio of preregs to day-of regs is, so I really have no idea whether that's a "good" or "bad" number.

Registration to the Grand Prix main event closes Friday night. THERE WILL BE NO SATURDAY REGISTRATION.
I'm guessing this is not normal since it is uppercase, bold, and red on the site.
Interseting; good catch. I'll keep track of it over the course of tomorrow. Needless to say, a GP with < 1000 players would be really dismal, so I'm hoping it gets higher than that by game day.
Well we're up to 650! Still 1150 more seats to fill...
Sadly, I will be surprised if Vancouver breaks 1000. Memphis being the same weekend is going to hurt both events. It will be interesting to see where the pros end up playing though.

although Memphis will steal a lot of people from Vancouver, if it doesn't reach 1000+ people it means that the modern players are bored with the format, so maybe wizard is gonna do something. But we don't have enough data, like ktkenshinx said, to prove that. Anyway in a city like Vancouver i find it surprising that a gp can't reach 1000+ persons, with a standard event in the same week too.
As Bocephus said it would be nice to see where the pros are going
I don't think a lots of the ontario and quebec player(the two biggest playerbase in canada) will make the trip to Vancouver. (it cost close to 1000$ to have a trip)
So yeah that will cripple down the GP number.
The West of canada get only 33 of the 118 canadian PPTQ and PPTQ are awarded by magic population density. Soo.... roughly 75% of the canadian magic player will not go.
In Winnipeg (2300 km from Vancouver), we had less people come out to the GPT than the normal modern night - about a dozen iirc. AFAIK there was only one person planning on making the trip - the others were just modern hardcores hungry for local events.
Hard to have huge events like this outside of the Toronto Area as major population centers tend to be far between otherwise.

I'm a little surprised that we aren't seeing a lot of Washington based players come to Vancouver. With the dollar down, it's a great time to make a trip to Canada.
I would have gone myself, but the choices were either a 14 hour bus ride, or a $500 plane ticket. Neither of which I was happy to do.
OT About this: What other permanent's does the Squirrel player have on the board? I mean he/she must have at least six other permanents other than the squirrels...
Still tho, they are Magic squirrels...

I know of 2 Winnipeg people that went there. One didn't play in the GPT, don't know if the other did or not.
Ya, for non-Canadians, its a lot different than in the US. Our big population centers are much more spread out than in the US and Vancouver is the furtherest/hardest to get to of the major ones.
Flights in Canada are a lot more expensive as well, which will keep most of the Canadians from flying across country for this event. Combined with a Standard GP in the US, i would be surprise if this one gets the kind of numbers more recent Modern tournies do.
If this one was held in Toronto or Ottawa or Montreal instead, it would easily have capped out (a lot more large population centers in drivable distance, as well as close enough to the border to have US players cross in).
Modern seems to be having a perfect storm for bad things happening to it right now (PT after a big ban making the meta look a lot worse than it is, a GP that appears to be kinda flat in attendance, poor reviews from a few super vocal Pros ). Sucks that my favourite format seems to be constantly under attack...... :'(
Well, we are up to about 675. That's on track for a real attendance disaster. There are definitely other factors at play here besides just Modern, but I think we can all guess what's going to take the brunt of the blame.
Not that the weather patterns and seasons play a huge role in any of their scheduling but I have always wondered why they set up so many GPs in distant and cold weather areas in the winter months. Seems like they are subtly pushing Modern into a dark corner through the continued scheduling like this.

I have heard a lot of Chicago/Milwaukee area players talking about how its more affordable to go to Memphis then Canada. So you may be correct.

Also last GP in vancouver attracted only 1042 player and it was standard.
Comparable event were 70% or 100% bigger during that time frame.
