Wow, I just realized they didn't even reprint any of the merfolk cards. Cursecatcher, the lords, nothing. This set is messed up.
Yep, Cursecatcher at least could have seen a printing as it doesn't require a other merfolk cards to be printed, along with a slew of many other uncommons they missed.
The big takeaway is that MM2015 has a lower density of playable cards than its predecessor, the first MM. It gets much worse when you factor in the MSRP increase. In summary, you have to spend about $4.35 to get a single playable card in MM2015. For MM, you just had to spend $2.56 per playable. Although I wouldn't go so far as to call MM2015 a failure, this is definitely a strike against it.
I have to say, I've been generating sealed pools just to proxy out sealed decks to run against each other, and the limited environment feels very sub-par compared to the last modern masters.
If I'd had my way, I probably would have done something like: UW merfolk, UB faeries, UG ramp and tricks, UR combo-feel (kiki/splinter twin not with combo pieces but with ETB value (bouncing stuff, etc., very tempo heavy, artifact subtheme), WR kor weenies/equipment, WG elves, WB tokens, BR goblins, BG sacrifice/reanimation/attrition theme, and GR rampy/stompy feel. By leaning heavily on tribal mechanics (elves, faeries, goblins, rogues, kor/soldiers, merfolk/wizards, etc) you allow a limited set to reprint a ton of the tribal staples to get people into the cheaper modern decks, you get the option to bring out a lot of modern staples, and you seek to craft a limited environment more akin to that of Lorowyn rather than what they did.
I think the big mistake in modern masters is that they focused on keyword mechanics instead of on the overall feel of the set--if you start with cards you want to play with, and then lock in keywords based on those, you narrow yourself a lot more than if you take the cards you want to reprint and ask yourself "what is a fun archetype to play this in limited with?". I'm actually considering putting together my own version of a modern masters III set (with a jumped set legality) and tuning it with my cube group over the next year, and then seeing how it compares with the (hopefully) next MM release, both in terms of playability and of "value".

Yes, I am a local area mod. WELP. GOOD LIFE CHANGES ALL HAPPEN AT ONCE AND SOME ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
Primary Decks:
Modern: Esper Draw-Go
Legacy: RUG Lands
EDH: Sidisi turn-3 storm
There is also Kor Duelist, Mirran Crusader, O-Ring, Myrsmith, Muldrifter, Nameless Inversion, Sign in Blood, All Suns Dawn, Commune With Nature, Macta Rioters, Nest Invader, Agony Warp, Boros SWiftblade, Mystic Snake, Lorescale coutl, Pillory of the Sleepless,Swans, Sunforger, Lodestone Golem, Frogmite, Myr Enforcer and maybe something with elementals.
Granted I am stretching on playable. The only play most of these will see is in budget, fringe, testing and maybe tier 2.5 decks barring a future print that makes them awesome
Understatement much? Of all of those cards mirran crusader sees actual play in hatebears, mulldrifter sees play in heartless summoning, and oblivion ring sees 1-of play in some RW prison/control/pillowfort decks. The rest have never been played in a modern deck other than a terrible pile of cards that happened to be modern legal on someone's kitchen table. As much as I want mystic snake to be good, its not.
Nest Invader won a tournament a couple of years ago in a GWr Summoning Trap list
Frogmite and Myr Enforcer won a tournament a year ago or so in an alternative Affinity list
But yeah the rest are mostly for the casual brews. Though some of them have potential (mainly Sign in Blood and Nameless)
I'm wan't talking about good or what sees play, I was talking about things that were just good enough that they might make the cut in a build.
Whether its mystic snake being tossed in because somebody couldn't find a 4th copy of cryptic, a B/W control deck that is looking for an answer and a threat, a domain zoo build that wants to try a 3 mana 5/5, or a shot gun type deck that wanted a cheap double strike creature I can see ithat as at least a plausable possibility. I see these as the very bottom of what should of been included as far as modern playability was concerned.
Stuff like Commet storm, Hornet Queen, evolving wilds, conclave phalanx, instil affliction is what I feel is below the threshold of what should of been included.
Does anybody elses computer really have trouble with this website?
So, I'm all for Daybreak Coronet getting a reprint, but from a draft perspective...isn't it going to be total junk? There are only 2 other auras in the entire set that can enable it; both are in red; and one of those is Splinter Twin, which is rare and not a desirable pairing. The other is Goblin War paint, which is common...but who's going to actively draft that strategy?
The chalenge is now to make a constructed deck based on MM2015 alone
Would that be possible? This would be a step in that direction, but you would still need to replace some cards.
Only 1/3 of the cards in this build are available from MM2 alone. Long way to go.

Cursecatcher, Cavern of souls, Aether Vial have plateaued but are still not super budget friendly.
