We added Hixus to the spoiler earlier today, which feels like a sign to me that more Origins cards are just around the corner. Maybe we get some nice sneak peeks around this triple MM2015 GP weekend! No matter when the cards start coming out, this is the official spoiler thread for Magic: Origins.
Strictly worse than Oblivion Ring, which sees almost no play in Modern.
This is a pretty outstanding misuse of "strictly worse". Grizzly Bears is strictly worse than Ashcoat Bear. Shock is strictly worse than Lightning Bolt. And even in those cases, we can probably find some situations where the "worse" card is actually better, typically involving extreme corner-case examples or involving Mindslaver.
But this guy isn't even close to being in that category. He doesn't even do the same thing as Ring. It's just a bizarre comparison. Yeah, I agree he's not playable (unless he's like, a 5/5), but he's definitely not "strictly worse" than O-Ring. We can't start off the spoiler season already misusing terms! IT'S TOO EARLY FOR THAT.
If I remember correctly this set will be standard rotation which means some cards they can't reprint that are modern staples because they would rule standard. Correct me if I am wrong please
However cards like scape shift and aven and others won't be that great in standard and could be reprinted to help even more modern prices drop. I know people are crying for damnation and blood moon but I doubt we will see those if this is standard legal.

This is still a "Core Set", just with a fancy name. It will be Standard legal.
I think Hixus could be good in limited if his stats are high enough, but I doubt he makes any sort of impact on Constructed formats.
I don't like the idea of having to meet conditions to get your planeswalker. I think that will make cards with the same design style as the new Liliana unplayable in modern, probably in standard to should the creature itself be sub par.
This set will include reprints correct? Or this like a new set. To what I thought this set was going to be an outlet to relieve more $$ for the modern community. Or is it really just another m10-15
A set loaded with modern staples would probably be pretty dangerous. Whenever they do do it in standard it's nice, but I really wouldn't ever count on it.
I don't think lili will necessarily be unplayable in modern. I think she slots pretty nicely into podless pod. especially if you already have viscera seer on the board, or hit her and seer with the same collected company (christmas land i know). I think people will at least try to slot her in somewhere.

Modern: UWR Breach, UWB Esper control
Legacy: UW RiP/Helm, UR Sneak and Show
Living the dream of Chord of Calling into Liliana, Heretical Healer in response to a removal spell from your opponent or after declaring blockers and bam you get a 2/2 Zombie and Liliana, Defiant Necromancer out of it.
May turn out janky but you all know I will try it out anyways haha
Besides I hate not being able to play a Liliana in all my decks
I hope the new Lili is 'unplayable' in Modern so I can pick up 4 cheaply to replace Necrogen Mists in BR Pox brews. EVERYONE START DISPARAGING THIS CARD, GET TRAVIS WOO TO SAY IT SUCKS.

GW Hatebears more like HateBROS BWR THE ARISTAHCRATZ!
I really like Liliana's design, because I can't think of a deck she fits into. That's always interesting, since that might create a new or semi new archetype if she turns out to be powerful enough.
And as I've said before: her loyalty should have been 4 for infi Zombies with Crypt Champion. All though that's probably a good thing.

I'm hoping that she has some use in the deck as well. I mean it runs multiple main board sac outlets that we are actively trying to find as we play anyways. Even if she always just acts as a reanimate effect for Kitchen Finks or Eternal Witness that is fine because we get a free 2/2 zombie out of it. I have found playing that the board can often get clodded and you have extra BoP's or something and can sac it off to scry before casting a Collected Company. This just gives a reason to do that now. I'm not sure if I'd ever play more than 1, but she sure seems powerful in the right scenario's.
I'm also waiting for everyone who cracked 2 Goyfs and 1 Bob during MM2 drafts to try and use her as a LotV replacement. It's not going to work 99% of the time and will be amusing to see.
Even in the worst case scenario is often a two for one against creature based decks.
The problem is the shell to play it in, UWR Control is not a real deck right now and he would shine in it especially from the board where you face less removals and combat tricks are better.

I don't think Liliana will get played in any deck. Certainly not Melira CC, given that Murderous Redcap is already hard enough to cast. She doesn't really offer anything that the deck doesn't already have: Viscera Seer to soften removal, and Reveillark to bring back dead guys.

Hixius' effect isn't single target, it gets every creature that dealt damage to you that turn. It can almost be like a one sided board wipe, if one that ends when he's removed.
I know this is going to cause some major rage in this thread, but I am hoping for some real throwback "like" cards. I am not saying exact reprints but cards like Karma or Red Elemental Blast would really be nice in a set called Origins. I miss the ole days where colours were actually opposed to each other instead of every colour basically being the same-ish.
I know the set is designed to be about the Origins of the main planeswalkers, but I would like them to incorporate some of the "Origin" or namesake cards in Magics history as well. A reprint of Counterspell Lightning Bolt etc would be great, though it would take a lot of effort on the side of WotC to make sure those reprints wouldnt takeover the standard format.
You simply aren't going to get hosers like that in Standard anymore TheNoob. Sam Stoddard's article about developing for modern last week was pretty clear about that. The days of the vicious colour hosers are gone. Going forward it's going to be more pinpoint answers rather than, say, Flashfires.
I also seem to remember MaRo saying something about Origins having more new cards than a normal Core set on Blogatog, but I could be wrong.
Either way, looking forward to seeing the Modern viability of the new cards. I don't think Hixus has it though, by the time he comes online you probably don't want to be taking that much damage.

The problem of Red Elemental Blast is that it really doesn't hose Blue. In Legacy, it's most commonly played in Blue decks. It's not much of a hoser if it's easy to play in a deck that's running the color it's hosing.

As others have pointed out, she works quite nicely in podless pod. No hassle or new brew necessary. Probably not more than a one-of, but still, it fits with the semi-toolbox nature of it and synergizes well with viscera seer, then once flipped you can just sac her to reanimate an eternal witness or finks. It's definitely situational, but absolutely fantastic value in the situations it's good in.
I do agree it's an interesting design, though. I like the idea of her in some sort of pox build, too.

Stony Silence and Rest in Peace I think were specifically excluded from the powerful hosers list in the article. Apparently hating on decks viciously is fine, hating on colors viciously is not. So Boil and Choke will probably have trouble being reprinted, but Rest in Peace and Stony Silence are still likely to see reprints.

Hence the reason I said not exact reprints.... though I think your argument that cards cant be printed bc they might end up in decks that share other colours isn't exactly sound.... My point was that the theme beyond it and other cards from Magic's past have a flavour of colours actually being opposed instead of just a random requirement assigned to each colour in a semi-random nature
As always I would like to see Innocent Blood.
It would make sense flavor-wise considering Lilianas history and story but of course I won't get my hopes up seeing that card. I do hope for a lot of goodies in Black though.
Also interested to see if a lot of the Green cards will turn out be Elf-centric considering Nissa and her history. If so I hope it's done right and not like Nissa Revane

Let's keep discussion focused on the Modern playability of these cards and not on all the other stuff that typically comes with spoiler threads!
