So me and my friend tried an experiment the other day to get a rough calculation of the best colors in modern. Basically, we went through tier 1, 2 and 3 decks, as of how there are listed of here as of the August 2015 update, and gave them 2 points for a tier 1 deck, 1 point for a tier 2 deck, and .5 points for a tier 3 deck, docking if we determined the color was a "splash." This is obviously pretty inaccurate and just a rough estimate but it's still interesting to look at.
So what does this say? First off, blue is obviously not as people say it is in this format. Yes some of the "blue" decks are just in it for the combo pieces, and the number is somewhat skewed because of the fact that many blue decks are quite similar to each other (i.e. Grixis Delver vs Grixis Control vs Grixis Twin), but even with that in account it's still quite comparable with the numbers put up by GB. Speaking of which, black is a lot weaker then I thought it would be. And poor white! However, white is involved in many tier 3 decks, including a couple mono white ones, (i.e. Death and Taxes and Soul Sisters, though the latter usually has a light black splash), so it's actually close to black when tier 3 is taken into account.
Modern has been BGx vs URx for a long time. Blue and Black are arguably the two best colors in modern, with green and red vying for second place. In a distant 4th is white (because brown is better than white), which is in a terrible position in modern right now. White has few main deck cards, but all the sideboard cards, which is the polar opposite of the other colors.
The problem with your reasonning is that it inly takes into account the number of deck of a given color and not the % of letagale of that deck. This is corrected to a point by weighting by tier but you should give a coefficient to each deck linked to its metagame share
