So i was recently introduced to this site by a good friend of mine. It's similar to MTGO but it's completely free to use, and also quite user friendly. All you need is an account which is free to make. The site allows you to build your decks using basically every single card imaginable. You can then join or create a game for people to join. There's also a large chat screen that allows you to communicate with other users to set up a game of Modern, Standard, Commander, EDH or even Vintage and Legacy play.
It's a great way to test out new deck idea's or get into a quick game of Magic on your down time.
I've never heard of or tried Xmage. I made this post to inform people of a free way to play MTG online. It's also a recently new site, so you can't expect it to be perfect from the get go. I do know they are constantly updating and improving it though, and as it is, it's not bad at all.

Are these alternatives better than Cockatrice?
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.

This isn't really related to Modern, and it's of questionable legality with respect to Wizards' copyrights on MTG and MTG software.
