I've been kicking this card back and forth in many different deck ideas, so few actually panned out to do anything. I'm not just talking about the deck Saffron Olive posted, but in decks like Death and Taxes. It feels like it should fit there somehow but I can't find the squeeze for it. It's good against the decks like midrange and control because it's faster there but loses to combo and aggro and I was hoping for it to work there. I really want it to work, but after going 1-3 with the deck tonight I'm ready to shelve it.
The problem with Oketra's Monument in Modern is that it is (1)an artifact that (2)costs 3 to cast and (3)does exactly nothing when you cast it.
1) Because of decks like Robots and Lantern Control, decks always has some way to deal with Artifacts. Grixis Shadow runs Kolaghan's Command, every BGx deck ever has multiple copies of Abrupt Decay, etc. If you want to run an artifact in Modern it needs to be part of your decks main strategy (like Robots or Lantern) or extremely damn good for your deck (like Walking Ballista and Chalice of the Void in Eldrazi Tron)
2) 3 mana is a lot of mana in Modern. Especially when you consider that on average Wizards wants decks to be able to win on Turn 4. This means there will be a non-zero number of games where you could cast Monument on 3 being on the draw, and then just proceed to die the following turn. If you want to play something that costs 3 or more mana in Modern you usually are either playing a bigmana deck or the card has some sort of insane value (again I'll point to Kolaghan's Command)
3) Worst of all when Monument hits the board it does literally nothing. Worse still, even in the Death & Taxes list you mentioned wanting to run it in, you can't even use AEther Vial to try and get some value off the monument before you untap. No you only get the token when you cast a creature. Well *****.
Honestly Monument seems good in Standard, where even with the current Ramunap Red deck the format is much slower than Modern. Modern is too fast of a format for a 3 mana artifact that you need to untap with to get any value out of.
I agree with Freak and Billion. The card itself does zero when it's cast, and lion is the best card to combo with it. Next is squadron hawk. But what freak doesn't tell you is that you probably won't be playing this turn 3. I have played this in modern about 125 games or so. Of that I probably cast monument maybe a dozen times on turn 3. Often I play it turn 2. And mostly it's turn 4, 5, or 6. After putting some value out on the board. The card is really bad against combo. Not good against control like, but it shines like a boss in aggro. Which in my area makes up probably 75 to 82% of the meta. Different forms, from eldrazi, burn, stompy, etc. Monument is a must answer card or they quickly lose ground and in a bad way. EOT make 5 1/1 and gain 10 life...
Picking the right time to play this deck is key.
