Pyromancer is my pet deck at the moment, so I'm just happy to see it on camera. Liliana of the Veil in the main is unconventional, but the deck's flown a bit under the radar, so there might not be an "optimized" list right now. Hope LotV doesn't catch on, she's expensive and I don't want to have to buy any. >.<

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.
Mardu Pyromancer vs 5c Humans. Pyromancer is lower down on the percentage played ladder so it's nice to see it on stream. Also he has what looks like Beta Bolts. I expect this one to go to the Pyromancer game 1 and then game 2/3 may be decided by some well timed Izzet Staticasters if he has them in the sideboard otherwise it's Pyromancer all the way.
D I V E R S E F O R M A T
I agree. Mardu has both land (Blood Moon) and artifact (Kolaghan's Command) hate that deals with 5C Human's greedy mana base AND Vials in its main board, also a ton of 1-for-1 removal. I think Mardu is favored in this matchup.
Day 1 is EXCEEDINGLY healthy by basically every metric. Day 2 obviously matters more, but this at least means not everyone showed up with one of about five linear decks and just expected to face roll with them. Also, Day 1 metagame breakdowns are excellent because we'll be able to see Day 2 conversion rates and then conversion rates to X-4, X-3, X-2, X-1, and the Modern-only T8. This will be an important performance metric in the absence of other metrics from Wizards. I am also sure we can deep-dive some MWP data from this when the PT is over.
Also, that list of most-played cards at the PT is awesome. What a great addition. I will note that the top 11 cards are almost all interactive or lands (they are ALL interactive if you count SV).
I'll fix that. I made the thread on mobile and that was an oversight.
That Mardu Pyromancer vs Humans game was a great example of "why your life is a resource and only the last point matters." Should show that to new players who question it and overvalue life totals.
Based on the day 1 numbers (the only complaint I can possibly see are the top 3 decks are all very aggressive, but we expected that), what does this do for both BBE and SFM's chances of an unban?
Looks like SFM could MAYBE slot into 6 of the top 15 decks but you've got max 2 that would consider BBE.
Ivan Floch on Grixis Shadow, vs Reid Duke on Abzan. That's going to be interesting. I believe Abzan is slightly favored here, due to Lingering Souls and Path To Exile, but due to Duke's dislike of Path, I dbout he is running any.
Looking through the Day 1 Metagame Breakdown there are many interesting decks in that 4-or-less players list. I'd love to know the lists of some stuff like Bant Evolution/Eldrazi Spirits/R/G Eldrazi/W/B Zombies/etc... and their reasoning behind bringing those decks to the PT.
The most played cards list is also very interesting. Lightning Bolt is at the top of the format again, and what looks to be a lot of Relic of Progenitus's in the sideboards. Also with Tarmogoyf at the 63rd card played, I think it's pretty clear that it wasn't all the reprints that have dropped the price of the card, but it changing the format so that it's bad and people sell their copies /s
I was half-right with what I thought the PT meta would look like, but I was way way off on everything else like Lantern and Storm being very represented. I guess pro's don't think they're very good, expected the Humans percentages, or just didn't want to think that much while playing?
I...dont like Humans. It just seems to want to dump cards, and keep going, is that a wrong assessment? Its like Ally builds, or Fish, but with less tricks?
I'm starting to think that Modern is a pretty casual format, since there's a guy running 4x Vexing Devil and currently undefeated. Good thing he is being trampled over by Humans and looking silly with the devils in hand.

I would like to see what Grixis Control lists are floating around. That surprised me a lot as a choice.
It's a good pick into Humans and Affinity, with lots of good sweepers, Bolt, and access to Fatal Push. The only deck in the top 10 most played decks that I recognize as an awful match up is Tron. There are worse places to be.
The concensus in chat was that Ivan Floch unfortunately gave the first game away against Reid Duke. He scooped. Instead, he should have left Liliana resolve, sac his tapped shadow and counter the push. Then Reid could not attack since Floch would survive and kill Reid in return. Oh well, it's the Duke effect.

Yes, I was watching the game live, and he was not dead on board: let Lily resolve, sac the tapped Death's Shadow, and counter the Fatal Push. 2 attackers, 2 blockers.
@idSurge, the Humans decks aren't that dumb to play. The sequencing of the 2-drops is tighter than Burn T2 plays, Meddling Mage is quite challenging to master, Aether Vial remains a tricky card with some depth, Collected Company is what it is, and so on. Your hate for the deck sounds like when people hate Burn, Elves, Coco decks, Storm, etc... in short, any linear deck. If you don't have respect for Humans, you don't have respect for the vast majority of performing decks in Modern. Better watch and play another format then...

Pioneer - A bunch of stuff Modern - Humans Legacy - Grixis Phoenix / Death & Taxes
I dont think I agree here headminerve, but I've only seen a few of the games so far.
Burn, completely different in again, what I've seen.
Elves, may as well be a combo deck in many regards.
Coco Decks, similar, and I'm not a huge fan, but CoCo is a spell. A wall of lands that tap for anything, and Cavern...well, thats a pretty solid difference.
Storm? Not in the least bit similar.
To me, (again I've only watched a few games) its much closer to Merfolk than anything else no? Also I have to admit, I loathe Thalia, so that may be what tips me over from it being just another deck, to 'eww Thalia' range of emotions. :]

No deck at more than 10% is good. Storm is good again so Finkel might be playing it. 3-2 now
