I had heard of the deck before but didn't really know what it was trying to build mana into before I played it maybe 2 months ago
Yeah it is one of these decks that you have to actually study and/or face a couple of times to know exactly what to do. I have never faced it or played with it, but when the combo was found for the first time I spent quite a bit of time just watching videos/streamers play it cause I am weird. But in general, it can happen in modern to face decks that you've never seen before and that is really a problem when you are playing control.
Edit: I also have to say, Eduardo Sajgalik is by and far the best commentator I've listened to in a long while. Exceptional analysis and exceptional communication of very complicated lines of play, kudos to him.

all I knew during my first match was that it was gonna sac a bunch of artifacts to make mana and cast something dumb
RG Eldrazi over Humans
Knightfall over Scapeshift
Jund over GW Taxes
Tron over KCI
Good call. I think RG Eldrazi vs. Humans can be super close and although I don't know the composition of "GW Taxes," if it has Smiter and Wilt-Leaf Liege, it could stand a chance vs. Jund. The other 2 I completely agree. I'll say this.

Eh, if Taxes wants to kill itself, such is life. I hate Thalia almost as much as Karn. The fact they didnt put on the best match up BY FAR, is criminal to me.
favorite top 8 list is easily knightfall. vikram has a little bit of everything going on. two combos with devoted druid and retreat + knight, toolbox support with chord, and jace to tie the room together. looks like a blast to play.
rug scapeshift is a pleasant surprise. it has fallen by the wayside with the RG titanshift, but it has always been one of the decks that could best support 4x cryptic command so i figured a couple of jaces to help dig for what you need could really breath new life into the deck.
another taxes deck showing up in a top 8. i even own a version of the deck, but my opinion on it has never been the highest. kudos to tate donovan for showing you can pilot a tier 2 option to the top with some skill and a little bit of luck.

Yeah I agree, there were some sweet decks going on, and the diversity in the top is pretty nuts. That Knightfall deck is a thing of beauty though for sure I hope it takes it down.

well no self respecting blue mage would root for jund. even if humans is on caverns, vials, AND thalia
I was a Blue mage for years. I am rooting for Humans. Jund is ALWAYS the enemy. Do you know how many sub 1600 rated players I lost to during Jund in Standard because of BBE? It's pretty embarrassing. It's literally the time when I lost to the most players who were not quite as good as myself. The time that's close to that is the current Modern,
Cavern never really bothered me much. I played it in Standard Delver. I tried it in Legendary Miracles in Legacy. I didn't play Blue much in Modern. So, Cavern and Aether Vial never really bothered me much, especially as a Combo first Modern player. Thalia on the other hand...

Well, I guess that BBE does win some games after all.

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes
Why in the world does the Top 8 decks page not simply list all of them? Why do I have to go to the drop-down menu and manually click on every single individual one to see it? It doesn't do anything other than make extra work for the reader.

At least we got to see that awesome "game" between KCI and Tron. It was almost good as the "game" where GW Taxes got land screwed in G3.
