Assassin's Trophy is one of the most broken answers ever printed, and one of the most broken answers I have ever seen.
I am unsure if this is right. Probably it will make BGx great again, thus make control decks a force once again, thus make Modern more intractive again.
These are all positive changes, but the power level of the card is absurd.
Happy to see that URx got an equally powerful, eternally playable, great ca-- oh wait.
I'm not worried about Trophy at all. Removal isn't really stifling modern right now; hell, even when I was running grixis control weekly I felt my removal was doing next to nothing in the meta. That said, I don't think a destroy affect that loses tempo is going to clobber modern; there are plenty of fast and/or resilient creature decks in the meta right now that do just fine competing with Path.
I have many hopes for this card, but I doubt it'll push out some of the top decks.
I do think this card's biggest boon is it's ability to downgrade lands to basics.
So for people talking about Counter spell in modern:
Can you imagine having to play against a sultai control deck in modern with Assasssin's Trophy, Counter Spell, Push, Cryptic where you literally won't be able to resolve anything?

Thing is, they are worried about standard when it comes to new card much more than modern. Maybe Trophy is much more suitable to Standard than a UR card with equivalent power level

No I cannot, because I would also have counters.
Snapcaster mage is indisputably the best card in modern. Giving Snapcaster more good targets like this is just reckless

Respect still needs to be paid to the rock/paper/scissors of Counter/Discard/Top-deck. Sultai isn't even a real deck right now, so how can you expect people to listen to this anyway?
If you want to beat counter decks, look no further than Cavern of Souls. You can add to that anything that says it can't be countered on it.

I hardly believe Ionize would have broken standard if you could target creatures too but i would have made the card much better in modern...

Ionize can target any spell including creatures
Yeah, that's the only redeeming feature to halfway justify the 3cmc cost. We already have Countersquall, which sees play in any deck that can cast it, and much easier to cast. I could see a lovely Sultai deck with main deck Squalls next to Assassin's Trophy's. Meanwhile Ionize is worse than Counterflux most of the time (which is also fairly bad in most decks most of the time).
The bottom line is that Ionize is embarrassing from a design standpoint. It's a glorified Uncommon-level card being propped up at the face-card of Izzet. It's a symptom of more than a decade of powering down things that interact with the stack and another example of endless sea of frustration from UR players.

The damage portion. It could then be counter + spot removal if needed, and maybe worth that 3cmc.
EDIT: In fact, that would probably have done it for me. If I could counter + nuke a Noble or a Bird? Sure.
The only reason I don't want to use 4 trophy is because Meddling Mage is still a thing. But would certainly run two in the main.
Have a feeling the two Tron players in our FNM would switch to using more Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger because it cannot be removed by trophy.
Their lands can though, and Jund or a BG deck with Fields and this will never let Tron get nowhere near to that 10 mana.
This.
I'm pretty sure this has been touched on already, but still it's pretty interesting to see how Wizards is helping fight Tron through new printings, as opposed to the bans that so many people are talking about (and have been talking about since Modern and 1 + 1 + 1 = 7 began).
I should clarify that I'm glad to see this and I hope this continues.

Yeah well seems a bit late sure Tron has been a Pillar but its not overly dominate where is the Cheap Boardwipe besides Terminus to keep HUmans in line or something to break up KCI...I suppose KCI is new but Humans have been good for a while you think they are going to print a legit 4 CMC Wipe or 3 CMC with a survivable downside?
As for Sultai? No I cannot because Sultai Decks are primarily theoretically top tier in most formats not actually top tier. The colors and color pairs that make it up don't play together. BG wants Red or White. UB wants Red or White. And UG is not allowed to be good outside of EDH. Basically it always ends up less then the sum of its parts, not more.

lmao oh s*** its a rare. wow, i didn't even realize that
Golgari gets to kill anything for 2 CMC at Instant Speed....Izzet gets handed a weak 3 CMC Counterspell even by 3 CMC Counterspell standards.
And what did dimir get? overcosted variant of a card that already existed. Izzet gets a hard counter that isnt double blue. I think thats actually pretty playable.

Sure but I didn't expect Dimir to get anything especially good. Since their Guild is not going to be a focus storywise. But yes they were similarly shafted.
Still dreaming and not enough after jace, teferi, opt, search and field? Maybe enough for next 2 years...they are other Decks waiting and waiting for nothing

I'm not terribly surprised that some blue mages continue to complain about a perceived lack of cards, but let's get some perspective. UW is Tier 1 in overwhelming part due to not one, not two, but THREE new cards: Opt, Search, and Teferi. Not to mention Field, although I admit that wasn't necessarily designed for blue decks. Not to mention the JTMS unban. Blue has PLENTY of targeted, incidental, and returned tools. Meanwhile, BGx continues to struggle despite Push and the released BBE. They get a powerful new answer and some blue shift the sctipt towards blue's perceived issues. These kinds of complaints really should stop.
Ionize reminds me of Undermine, If I recall correctly most of you were wishing for an Absorb/Undermine reprint a few months ago. A few of those bad boys with a Snapcaster in the midst can get the job done pretty quickly.
