Well, tell my a cycle where all the cards of the cycle are high power level.
What does Force of Virtue actually answer in Modern? Blue? Any noncreature spell while allowing you to tap out for and still hold interaction. Green? Any lock besides Lattice (which makes sense cause Lattice and Karn weren't in Modern when this was made) or any another annoying artifacts and enchantments at 2 for 2. Black? Anyone trying to cheat in a bunch of creatures which weirdly works as foresight considering Phoenix, Dredge and Neoform running around...White answers nothing at all. I mean was Anger of Gods really so dominant 1-2 Years ago to justify this as a good answer. Cause you are still getting owned by any Wrath and Terminus.
Honestly, i would have taken anything over this in White. Even considering Green and Black took good options. Life Gain, Token Generation, Tax Effect, Tapping or if they really want to buff tokens how about an Instant that gives Indestructible.
I think there's an old Daily MtG article about how designing a cycle of cards typically starts really well then falls off with the last couple; I think it gave some examples. I can't think of a name for the article and all I get when googling is articles about the keyword cycling.
Anyway, with White breaking the idea of a cycle of safety valves, my money is on Red just being some version of Pyrokinesis. It's about as Red as Red can be, but what it's allowed to target is anyone's guess.
Aside from filling out the horizon canopy cycle, the most exciting thing for me so far has been the reveal that slivers actually look like slivers again rather than those M14 Predator abominations. Lots of set left to reveal, but the vibes I'm getting from what we've gotten thus far tells me not to hold my breath for Counterspell entering Modern anytime soon. Still hoping we'll end up getting some solid reprints added to the format (e.g. containment priest, sylvan library, sterling grove, etc).
Ranger-Captain of Eos looks quite good. Tutors for a 0-1-drop on ETB, is a 3/3 for 1WW, sacs himself to interrupt a Storm turn or in response to Allosaurus Rider (or simply to prevent your guy from getting countered, or to force out removal when you play creature-based combo)...will Humans or Collected Company decks want him?
Is there a way to break Planebound Accomplice? Seems like you need to cheat out multiple walkers (Sneak Attack-style) with him on the same turn or he isn't worth it. Tough to come up with walker minuses with big enough impact to be worth losing them to this guy (although instant-speed walker static abilities are hilarious)--are stuff like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Chandra, Flamecaller good enough?
Hey neat, Crypt Rats is now in Modern! Can we find it a home?
Dregscape Sliver looks pretty spanking good in Slivers as a way to rebuild board presence.
I think Planebound Accomplice needs a flicker effect to make him really shine. Pay a R, slam that minus button, flicker the walker for sustained value. Too bad Astral Drift can't hit walkers... Unless you turn them into DRAGONS!!
Why is Force of White so goddamn awful. White gets screwed in a cycle again. Like at worst I thought we get tokens or life gain and we ended up with something worse. I mean I guess you can dodge Anger of Gods but control mostly drops Terminus or 4 CMC Wrath
Frostwalk Bastion is an efficient enough manland at a 2/3 for 2 mana, and needing snow mana to activate shouldn't be that hard to cater for (just fetch for snow basics). It's a nasty piece of work defensively, as it taps and forces no untapping for a turn when it deals combat damage to a creature. But will producing only colourless snow mana hurt it too much?
What's everyone still hoping for? Me, it's Counterspell and some more zombies (Carrion Feeder would be a great reprint, but I'm up for anything).
Counterspell would be great, but I'm not as sure as I was before spoilers started rolling in. I'd still be happy with getting just one of any of the following: Sylvan Library, Sterling Grove, Enlightened Tutor (or some "legacy-lite" new version for Modern), Containment Priest, legacy-lite version of Replenish, etc.

i dont really know anymore. the spoilers so far have simultaneously gone beyond my expectations while falling short of them at the same time.
there have been a surprising lack of actual reprints, so i guess im hopeful for some of those; instead of just 're-imagined' stuff. things like fire//ice, vindicate, pernicious deed, etc (of course counterspell would be welcomed).
beyond that most of the cards are in that spoiler-evaluation-state where very few, even among seasoned players, seem to know what the hell they are talking about let alone accurately predict anything.

Man, did you know Engineered Plague flavor text or did you search for clues like a crazy dude ? That is spot on no matter what !
heh, nah all i did was scroll through some of the comments on the article to see what others thought of the 'hint'. some people mentioned germs and e-plague, and when i looked it up it was spot on as you said.
kind of a weird card frame to show for the announced spoil though, so i figured it might be some artifact variant? or maybe its just the first generic empty frame pic the author could find.

I am hoping that the Red Force is useful. After seeing the White Force, I no longer have any expectations that the Red Force will be a reasonably costed Burn spell, but - at this juncture - I would be over the moon with a Chaos Warp effect.

May your games be chaotic and your decks be Rogue.

I'm still betting on Pyrokinesis throwback, but I agree the W one throws off our expectations.
That wurm form card is gross. Between UG canopy land and that, Infect is getting a big boost.
Is there a loam deck that can make use of this in interesting ways I like this design.
Also Empty the Bears of your Neoform/Combo wins
I think that, even if Life from the Loam decks use Ayula's Influence in boring ways, that's still making 6 power's worth of creatures every turn. That wins games fast.
I think Neoform Grishoalbrand will stick with win cons that win that turn and can be cast with only Simian Spirit Guides and one Manamorphose, though...unless they give us Elvish Spirit Guide, but that would be nuts.

Honestly if I ever get T1'd by Neoform one day and their wincon is OCEAN OF BEARS then all is forgiven
Name checks out as a bear lover.
I'm gonna see how well it'll fit in the assault loam decks, not sure if 6 damage or 3 2/2 bears is preferable. Also maybe the goal should be to abuse ETB effects?
Either way I love this card, and it just keeps adding to cards I actually want to build around coming out of this set which is incredible

Might Scrapyard Recombiner find a home in Hardened Scales Robots or something? 3 mana, Modular 2, taps itself and sacs an artifact to tutor a Construct into your hand...like Walking Ballista or Hangarback Walker. It is kinda like a walking Evolutionary Leap in that way.

This is too silly.

Cloudstone Curio works with Walkers pretty well.
I doubt it is a thing though feels clunky.
It's nice with Squadron Hawk though

If not that, I'm looking for an unconditional BB: exile target creature at instant speed. Maybe with Gain 2 life stapled to it.
