A bit of a silly question, but I assume that the sideboard in a deck like this would mostly be utility slivers like Harmonic (against affinity), Syphon/Darkheart (against Burn), Venom or Quilled (against go-wide creature-heavy decks) Slivers? Ghostflame would be a cute addition against a Tron-heavy meta to help protect your dudes against Ugin.
This looks like a deck I'd like to put together and give a shot, which is why I'm asking about the sideboard. I'd need to pick up the slivers and hives, but I already have the rest of the landbase and the vials.
I’m no expert, but here’s my guess :
Aggro : Quilled Sliver and/or Venom Sliver (to snipe attackers or blockers), Spiteful Sliver (to lock opponent from attacking, until you get a force that will inevitably win if you attack), Two-Headed Sliver (blockers are halved, rounded down = amazing card advantage).
Control : More of Dregscape Sliver (if you don’t play full playset in the main deck), Frenetic Sliver (sweepers should’t wipe more than half your board).
Don’t forget that against most of these decks, you should also have main deck 4 Necrotic Sliver to either get rid of key pieces, or lands to effectively deny opponent the ability to play Magic.
All that being said, I think I would try to avoid Venom and Quilled in my SB (cute, but unlikely) vs Aggro, as well as Two-Headed (chances are you’re already playing 4 Galerider and 4 Cloudshredder in the main for redundant evasion, so Menace is not that useful). Spiteful seems enough to prevent you from losing (force a draw if you can deal lethal with opponent’s alpha strike) or guarantee a win as long as you have more power on the battlefield than opponent has life.
Also, I prefer Darkheart over Syphon to gain life. Burn can just remove Syphon and screw you, but you can always sacrifice Slivers at instant speed to gain life with Darkheart (and you usually just need to gain 3 to 6 life to win vs Burn).
I think some quantities of these cards should be enough to cover Modern’s metagame :
Quick report after a few tests with traditional list, with no CoCo, 4x Cloudshredder Sliver, 3x Dregscape Sliver and 3x Unsettled Mariner:
-Cloudshredder Sliver is very powerful. Haste for 2 manas creates very explosive draws with mana slivers, and this without counting with the evasion that flying grants
-Dregscape Sliver is promising. It grants pseudo card advantage, and can steal wins by itself. Sadly, it loses value against decks that do not kill our slivers. Probably, this will become a sideboard staple.
-The sliver that impressed me so far was, in fact, not a proper sliver. Unsettled Mariner effect is crazy, and even better if combined with Diffusion Sliver. Being in curve is amazing, taxing spot removal is amazing, but protecting lands from Field of Ruin and alikes, Aether Vial from artifact hate and yourself from discard, face damage and combo finishers (like Grapeshot) is absolutely nuts. Landing a Mariner against Burn in turn two is a dream.
The biggest issue, however, is that the manabase is no longer sustainable, and demands an intense rework.
I would love to get dregscape or lavabelly in here, but I value the stupid amounts of protection that a full playset of Diffusion and Mariner provide in this build as I need the mana slivers to survive. I don't like running the 4 Leylines. I would prefer Damping Sphere, Syphon Sliver, Frenetic Sliver, and Telekinetic Sliver. Sad that there is only so many slots.
Yes. I think it’s time to drop Sedge Sliver from our lists. It’s certainly good, but warps the deck around its presence, like The First Sliver. Consistentcy is more important, and I much prefer 16 to 18 gold lands, along with 2 to 4 Mutavault, than fetched shocklands that can’t fix more than 2 of our color needs.
Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask but I haven't played in years since Shards of Allara but I noticed Modern Horizons included my old love slivers so I bought a set of all the common and uncommon slivers.
On quite a tight budget but would it be possible to make anything reasonably ok for fun casual play with friends using the common and uncommon slivers in the Modern Horizons set? I could go grab more of the commons and uncommons in the set to pad it out with other cards I was thinking to use changelings as padding. LGS near me sells commons for 10 cents each and uncommons for 30 cents.
I think if I dig around at home I may have some older stuff like gemhide slivers and those poison slivers and perhaps some runed stalactites (though I saw there was a common axe that makes a creature equipped all creatures) etc
I saw the First Sliver for sale and it looked cool but $55 each was way out of my budget haha
I would guess I don't have the good lands I just have the common ones from back then like dual colour but comes in tapped or some of the shards of allara fetch lands that lets you sacrifice it to find a basic land. Or the utility tap lands but those aren't useful for generating mana. Or the ravnica bounce another land back to your hand like golgari rot farm. Have shimmering grotto and cave of temptation.
Have some doors to destiny and grabbed some of the etchings of the chosen from the latest set incase they were useful.
Since its just kitchen table casual playing I think my friends wont mind if I proxy some lands for testing just nothing stupidly expensive or powerful that I would never actually buy in future.
I suggest you use an app like TopDecked on your Apple or Android device to build your deck, with filters for Modern legal Slivers. You can opt to filter out Rare and Mythic cards if you want, but I suggest you have a look at them and sort them by price. Some good rares are cheaper than uncommon staples.
Once you have settled on 2-3 colors, build your manabase by filtering lands by color identity, again sorted by price. Some good rares have been printed, that rotated out of Standard but are not good enough for competitive Modern. These should 1-2$ each.
We can’t do all the hard work for you, as we don’t know all the cards that are playable outside of the usual staples. But if you can come up with a list, and post it here, we can certainly comment on it (make sure you format your post with a deck list, so we don’t have to search your cards in The Gatherer).
The deck was oriented to a Naya colors deck. And because of this, I found that playing Dregscape Sliver was more a sideboard card than a main one. Also, because of the lack of swamps, Sedge Sliver was almost always a dead card if we don't hit a mana sliver to regenerate.
The lack of T1 play (if didn't hit Vial or Striking Sliver) was very impactful.
Galeriders will help the first turn play.
Spiteful Sliver did a great job against Hardened Scales. It's basically a creature that stopped it from attacking with any creature thanks to it's ability to absorb the damage and redirect it.
Homing Sliver I found it quiet good to find the last pieces to win the game, so I'm going to add the second one.
My games today were:
2-1 vs Hardened Scales
First game I won thanks to Sentinel, Spiteful and Cloudshredder. Second game I lost on second turn with lethal infect. Third game I could destroy in a one turn hs and hangerbar thanks to harmonic. After that, the same as the first game.
2-1 vs Tron
First game lost against an Ensnaring Bridge.
Second I could control their tron lands with Telekinetic and finish him with Sliver Legion. Third game was very aggro.
1-2 vs Tron
First game I won by turn 4 thanks to cloud and lords. Second game I got wiped by Ugin. Third game I hit by 18. My bad that I add a third counter to the vial, if I didn't add it, I would win as I had a 2 mana cost creature that could also attack and do lethal damage on T4.
1-2 vs Humans
First game he curved perfectly all turns.
Second game CoCo and cloud with lords gave me the victory,
Third game he started with vial while I didn't had a T1 drop.
I had a lot of fun today with Slivers that I didn't had in a long time. Cloudshredder and Sentinel sliver felt so good together, even more with some mana generator slivers.
I hope, and think, that the changes I'm going to do to the deck will improve it even more.
Sorry I think my post was too long and confusing and thanks for your help.
My main question was is it possible to build a decent kitchen table casual sliver tribal deck using only the common and uncommon modern horizons cards.
Which slivers should be dumped and replaced by spells or changelings?
Im thinking of removing bladeback, hollowhead and scuttling as they dont seem useful for just beating on people.
My main question was is it possible to build a decent kitchen table casual sliver tribal deck using only the common and uncommon modern horizons cards.
It depends what the others around the table are playing. Playing a deck made of only commons and uncommons from Modern Horizon is a bit far stretched, IMHO. Chances are your friends are playing something a bit more fine tuned... but if you can pull it together, and have fun, go for it!

They all play pretty much jank peasant decks either 1v1 or multiplayer as none of us are rich enough to buy crazy cards so it pretty much balances that everyone is playing commons and uncommons with a smattering of super cheap $1 rares. All about fun and not finely tuned decks I think anyone who brought something that won in 3-4 turns would have that deck banned =P

Ephemerate is there to save slivers form spot removals but it's also a combo with Dregscape Sliver, when you unearth a sliver you can attack with it and then Ephemerate it so then it will be exiled attending the unearth requirements but will come back on the field as a new sliver so you can keep it as if you had casted it. Winding Way could be used choosing "lands" and sending slivers to grave to unearth them for 2 mana of any color and haste, though you have to exile them, it might be worth the last points of damage.
You can use other cards you have to help make the list more suited for you, so feel free to change the list you prefer. Hope it helps!

I think this can be an interesting sideboard card.
Id cut second Swamp? Usual way is to stay at 2 basics because mana requirements are very high. Second Overgrown Tomb is also superfluous. Id go with anything but Island as second basic, Forest gives access to 12 cards, 4 of them manafix slivers, Mountain or Plains help cast Cloudshredder in usual situation when you have only one source of any mana. While Red and White are also in high demand. I didnt play with spiteful sliver but it seems bad to me. We need to be fast, he is 3 mana 2/2, there are many removals that dont deal damage - Path, Push, DIsmember, Wrath, Tap, Bounce. I dont like shadow sliver too, with 8 flying slivers we got a lot of evasion, he wasnt played before, he is worse now. Second Syphon is also kinda meh. So Id add two shocks and a Mountain/Plains instead of Swamp, Island and Overgrown Tomb. And replace Syphon, Shadow, Spiteful Sliver with something from Striking Sliver, Unsettled Mariner, Dregscape Sliver

Why? With no CoCo, you get 16 gold lands. Mariner is a Sliver in your hand, and no need to name Shapeshifter with Cavern...
