Hey, yeah that's a good call on the plague belcher, I'll admit I'm still figuring out how to play the deck.
You're probably right about the blasting station but those games where I have out Blasting Station, Wayward Servant, and Gravecrawler are just so satisfying... Honestly though I very rarely want to see a second vial, especially a third so I think your right about that.
I think i'm going to bring in 2 Path / 2 Push. I havn't really had any problem getting white mana unless I've been blood mooned, and I'd like a way to remove big fattys / creatures with annoying death effects.
As to relic, I just picked whichever sideboard games were lying nearby, I'll see if I can find my spellbombs.
All in all, since the idea of playing zombies was one of the reasons I started playing magic I'm pretty happy with the deck... It's all about the flavour!
Edit: Since I shamelessly copied your sideboard also, for what match-ups do you bring Kalitas in for? Red heavy decks? Grindy match-ups?
Yeah there's lots of little instant speed combat/board tricks this deck can do. It's one of my favorite things about piloting it.
Having mainboard removal is really nice
Kalitas has actually been in and out of my sideboard, but when he's in he's there for: Burn (not great, but anything helps), Dredge, Abzan Company, etc and sometimes against Midrange/grindy decks even though we already grind pretty well
He's probably not terrible against UWR since he only dies to Path and Verdict, but I usually don't have room for him after Thoughtseize, Lili, and Brutality.
Well I made some changes which bring my deck more inline with Dejadal's. Brought in some mainboard removal, I had originally planned 2 path and 2 push but I couldn't find my spare path so decided to run Dark Salvation instead. It's ok, It's great removal if you have some board presence, or if you want a mana dump, but is not particularly reliable removal compared to other stuff.
Haven't had as much time to test as I would like. Seems like creature-based games and other fair (i.e. slow) match-ups are pretty good. Cards like Diregraf Colossus and Wayward Servant do really well if we are given enough of an opportunity to use them. Pretty sure real competitive and combo decks will just stomp us but ho hey, that's what I expected.
Removed Engineered Explosives from the sideboard since we can only ever play it for 2, and too many important permanents are 3+ like ensnaring bridge.
Would like to try Liliana of the Vale, but I don't have any so I shoved a Liliana, The Last Hope in the sideboard as filler.

Combo is an absolute nightmare. Our only shot game one is to hope Sculler is enough to make them stumble and hope we draw our wayward servants. It doesn't get much better post board. Burn isn't very fun either. And yeah I'd say the rest of your assessment is accurate too. We do really well against BGx, UWx, Grixis Control, Eldrazi, Lantern, Value Town, Bant Company, Humans, etc
Yeah Engineered Explosives is in my SB for Merfolk, Humans, and sometimes cleaning up tokens. Ensnaring Bridge really isn't too bad depending on the deck it's in. This deck eats Lantern Control alive
Lili Last Hope is a really solid card in almost any list so I'm sure that will be just fine
Hey guys, have you ever considered Splashing Blue for Diregraf Captain and Perilous Research? they are just better versions of some stuff we already run, and the splash is not at all painful to the deck, since the tribal color for the Captain comes in the form of Cavern of Souls, and the Perilous research over costly Plunder is but a suggestion, totally irrelevant overall.
Hello all, I've been putting together a mono-black aggro deck & I'm hoping to get some feedback. There's overlap with WB Zombie Copter lists but I'm trying a mono-B version that plays a few more creatures & 16 Zombies in total. Thanks!
Heyo, peeps! Are folks still playing around with this? I just dipped my toe into putting a list together and wow, zombies is fun. Just wondering if there were people still playing it or building with it.
I've been messing around with graveyard marshal. It may not be good enough, but as a two of for another 2 drop, it's been alright. Anybody else messing with anything new?
I'm still playing a BW Vial list every once in a while but I've been switching decks a lot lately.
I don't think there was really anything interesting for us in M19. A 2 mana 3/2 is alright but it's outclassed by the two drops we already had (wayward servant, tidehollow sculler, Relentless Dead, Binding Mummy, etc)
It would be better if the ability costed less, token entered untapped, or could target an opponent's graveyard as well.
I think it might be alright if you're on mono black, but I'd sooner play the discard creatures like Miasmic Mummy

Using Sign in Blood to finish off a Worshiper or to allow a lethal attack through an Ensnaring Bridge would be the funniest thing ever But it really isn't a great cart, IMO.
Dreadhorde Invasion is the first amass card that looks like it could help us. It's a 2 drop zombie (sort-of), always on the lookout for those! It makes sure we get a chance at rebuying gravecrawlers every turn and hopefully it there is another amass card or two we might be interested in.
I also think the Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord looks promising as well if you're into BW zombies; Re-animating a tidehollow sculler is pretty sweet, and lifelinking the team is going to put us ahead in racing situations since zombies are not the best blockers anyways
The deck has finally got a good 2-drop with Undead Augur. There is probably an insane value engine in here between this and Crypt Breaker. Now all wee need is Carrion Feeder to solidify the deck. If it's spoiled I'll be looking to play some Zombies once the sets released.
A card out of the zombie theme like Mogis's Marauder could give the board evasion. I faced and played a few zombie decks so far, and evasion was an issue. Dredgevine has the same problem.
A way better card that would fit the theme and give reach is Gray Merchant of Asphodel. To me it's your best chance to win against Ensnaring Bridge / Ghostly Prison (that monoblack versions have no answer to) and get through a board full of creatures on both sides. It's a way to swing close games that tend to resolve on the right top deck (Burn, Affi, Zoo). Very comparable to Shaman of the Pack in Elves.
I encountered a Blasting Station deck yesterday, I found the synergy to be cute, a little less impressive than Ghirapur Aether Grid but not too bad. It's a nice mana sink with Gravecrawler ( = 1 damage). With Relentless Dead and open mana, it makes your opponents' spot removals very bad, because you can let them kill a zombie, then sac RD with Station, rebuy it for and pay the mana to reanimate the destroyed zombie. Prized Amalgam will come back end of turn for an extra damage if the previous synergies occured.
All in all, a fair aggro zombie deck is certainly a bad deck. With the things written above, and Geralf's Messenger, there's a potential for the deck ot do its own thing, and that involves a sac outlet, possibly in 4 copies. You want to proactively sac the guys quoted above. Taking that direction, only one lord would be auto-in : Diregraf Captain.
Wow those were my first impressions with this archetype back in 2016.
I wanted a sac outlet, now we got Carrion Feeder ! And 3 more years of cards of course.

Alright so I'm absolutely in love with carrion feeder and undead augur.
-
Carrion feeder has so many little combos and synergies in the deck, its nuts.
Carrion feeder + tidehollow sculler = exile a card from their hand permanently (if you want) by sacing before the EtB trigger resolves.
Carrion feeder + gravecrawler + diregraf colossus = cast the crawler, get a zombie from colossus, sac crawler to make carrion bigger. So you get a 2/2 zombie and a +1/+1 counter on feeder for B. If you have 3 mana up, you just made 6 power worth of zombies and your feeder is just getting bigger and bigger.
Carrion feeder + relentless dead + other zombies = this synergy is cute but requires mana, however it makes the opponent's removal job a nightmare. At instant speed you can sac RD and pop it back to the hand for B but also grab any zomb from the yard for its CMC. So things like sac and pop RD and drag out a Tidehollow and sac exiles a card from the hand for good (instant speed no less).
Carrion feeder + relentless dead + Carrion feeder(in gy) = when they start pointing removal at your feeders you can also do things like: feeder 1 gets targeted, sac and pop RD to drag out feeder 2 and have him sac feeder 1 before the spell goes off to get an extra counter out of the deal.
Then again if removal is being aimed at your feeders, you're probably gonna win that game.
You can sac and pop RD and grab a Death baron during combat before damage is done, at INSTANT SPEED. Death touch at instant speed is pretty cute.
Naturally wayward servant and undead argur are big fans of things coming in and leaving respectively.
Board wipes (especially with colossus) turn into things like draw 7 lose 7. Griselbrand where you at? Its actually nutty.
This is ofc singlehandedly wins the game for you most times if you weren't at like 9 or something.
If you wanna complain at the lost life, then you should go back to Selesnya where its safe. We play black, we lose life, its what we do.
Of course, if its really hurting, wayward servant can help this a bit and there are other spells you can use if you wanna dip out of zombies.
Sometimes wayward can win the game for you if youre in a bit of a stalemate board state, just sac with feeder and RD and you can put the pressure on real quick.

This is my 2 cents after playing with these 2 cards after about 5 games or so. Curious to see what else we can come up with in zombies. Id like to find room for some Lily in here...
Hey everyone, I stuck to the ESPER version of the deck. Have all the pingers in this version: Wayward Servant, Diregraf Captain, Plague Belcher and Blasting Station.
I experimented SO MUCH with this build. at one time I was playing Athreos, God of Passage as a extra drain effect. the deck feels more like a aristocrats zombie deck than actual tribal. (although it can switch from combo to beatdown quite reliably).
Before Undead Augur was spoiled, I began testing Soul Diviner in the 75. It was really nuts when he was out with Vial. a 2/3+ that taps to draw, resets your Geralf's Messenger undying, and regulates your vial counters at will, being great at making bluffs and tricks against removal. EVERY GAME I had him out WITH vial I felt Unbeatable. With Augur out I may replace the Diviner, together with Carrion Feeder the deck might have aditional legs on the beatdown plan.
since I play esper, I don't usually run Relentless dead (very black heavy cost and effects for reliable recursion, but It seems like a mono black version might be just as powerful, just not the same strategy. I'm very excited to test the Feeder, not as excited for the Augur but I WILL test him neverthless. wil post my results as soon as I get the new cards on my LGS's modern season.
[quote from="DHWorlds_BsB »" url="/forums/the-game/modern/deck-creation-modern/549966-modern-zombies?comment=733"]Hey everyone, I stuck to the ESPER version of the deck. Have all the pingers in this version: Wayward Servant, Diregraf Captain, Plague Belcher
How has plague belcher tested for you? how does it perform compared to Colossus?
Soul Diviner seems absolutely nasty with vial. I guess if you have feeder you could grab a counter from him or geralf when need be.
In theory, for me anyway it sounds a little too cute, but its good to hear you got positive results with it!
So, Plague Belcher hás been great. He's att his worst a 3/2 menace that pings, but in this deck, with vial up, his uses range From a combat trick tô a beatdown finisher in almost every match he shows.
Since he is a 3 drop I only run 2-3 of him in paralel tô 3-4 Diregraf Colossus.
With Gravecrawler on The field he's reliably a 5/4 menace For 3 that pings for one. You can vial It in response to Paths tô save your relevant creatures when The SAC outlet isnt on The field, and also tô Tidehollow trigger to permanently exile a card from opp hand. He's redundancy for The aristocrats finisher, and finally, he's evasive and thats surprisingly relevant.
Playing against midrange and aggro decks the death baron + diregraf colossus combo has been brutal. Do you have space for baron in a list with belcher?
Currently running

4 Aether vial
3 carrion feeder
3 crypt breaker
3 fatal push
2 path to exile
in the 1 drops
Trying to find a way to get another feeder, but maybe 4 is too much.
I think I might trade 1 of each baron and colossus to mess around with belcher. Also in your deck you have diviner to eat his counters, as well as hold onto them if necessary. I like it. 2/3 is relevant.
I think the B/W is the way to go for zombies. Tidehollow Sculler and Wayward Servant are critical. Way to ping the opponent, gain life, and take care of threats.
Carrion Feeder is a solid sac outlet, and only works if you can take advantage of it. Tidehollow Sculler + Carrion Feeder permanently exiles a card. It is just too good. Gravecrawler also works well with Carrion Feeder. Undead Augur is a necessity.
If your playing Cryptbreaker, you should consider Lazotep Reaver. As a turn two play, it activates Cryptbreaker, drawing you an extra card. This works with Vial too, so Vial might be the way to go. Also makes Augur better, since auguar + another zombie on turn 3 gives you 5 zombies, so a board whip lets you draw 5 cards.
Drawing cards early is important, since it allows you to run Force of Despair as viable removal.
Rough Idea so far, lands not fully figured out yet:
Cryptbreaker and Collective Brutality can pitch Gravecrawler/Bridge from Below/unnecessary cards. Collective brutality key since it can work to gain us life, discard a card we want in graveyard, kill a creature of ours to potentially draw a card/deal damage/, remove an opponents creature, or be a mini-thoughtseize.
Liliana, Heretical Healer might be an interesting card to try. With stuff like Carrion Feeder, you can sacrifice another zombie, have her create a zombie, flip her, and then bring back a lord or discarded card immediately.
Not sure about relentless dead. Might be too much of a mana drain. Dregscape Zombie or a lord might be a better play
I think the B/W is the way to go for zombies. Tidehollow Sculler and Wayward Servant are critical. Way to ping the opponent, gain life, and take care of threats.
I brewed a lot of BW Zombie Vial lists in the past because Tidehollow Sculler is my all time favourite card, but as much as I hate to say it, I think BW is simply too fair and too slow to be even remotely competitive. With the new cards from MH1 I will test a UB list which should be more explosive with a lot of graveyard shenanigans:
Sideboard will load up on stuff to beat unfair combo decks like Thoughtseize, Countersquall, etc. and maybe board out some graveyard dependant stuff games 2 and 3 for more lords like Death Baron in creature matchups.
Sideboard will load up on stuff to beat unfair combo decks like Thoughtseize, Countersquall, etc. and maybe board out some graveyard dependant stuff games 2 and 3 for more lords like Death Baron in creature matchups.
Interesting deck, but I don't see explosiveness here. You don't have much ability to get cards in your graveyard. Stitcher works good in an aristocrats/dredge build, but your build looks like a slower deck that doesn't really as much on graveyard.
You're probably right about the blasting station but those games where I have out Blasting Station, Wayward Servant, and Gravecrawler are just so satisfying... Honestly though I very rarely want to see a second vial, especially a third so I think your right about that.
