To the contrary, in my testing Driven//Despair has proven stellar. The thing is, it feels a win-more card but what it locks the opponent out of the game, preventing comebacks (discarding All is Dust against eldrazi and Valakut and Tron hands). I'm up to 3 for the consistency. However, I'm currently on the classic list with 4x Bloodghast and 3x Lingering Souls, which is able to put more creatures in play more quickly (albeit with smaller overall power), which can explain the difference in performance.
Rotting Rats is generally underwhelming, but last I saw Levy himself was playing an Extractor Demon in placec of the third Specter.
Veilborn Ghoul is a bit difficult to fully utilize. In my opinion, it needs at least 3 Urborgs to consistently abuse and, at that point, reconsidering a pox build for it is also necessary. However, I don't think there are enough slots in the deck for another squee-like shenanigan.
Yeah, it definitely makes sense that a lingering souls build would do better with driven // despair. Would you be able to post your current list?
I will be going to GP Birmingham in a couple of weeks and as I am not playing in the main event, I will be able to play in a few modern side events (and also get my Squees and lingering souls signed/altered!!!). This will give me an opportunity to play multiple versions of the deck against the top decks in the format, so I will be able to write a report of my results.
I can see you have gone with a 'token swarm' approach to zombie loam, rather than my version, which focuses on the squee, goblin nabob/conflagrate 'combo'.
How have you got on with the cycle lands and no darkblast mainboard? Only playing 19 untapped lands sounds a bit risky to me.
EDIT: the 2 two versions I intend to play at side events:
Sorry I have taken so long to reply ( I totally forgot about this comment lol)
Anyway, playing in the GP side events was really fun, however annoyingly I only had time to get into 1 modern side event on the Saturday (due to most people playing in the main event). I played 2 rounds before getting knocked out by Jund Deaths Shadow.
Round 1: vs Ad Nauseam
I was lucky enough to get zombie infestation in both games, which allowed me to put lots of pressure on him very quickly. In game 2, the amalgams, bloodghasts and zombies even managed to get through a angel's grace and phyrexian unlife. Extractor Demon and Sedraxis Specter looked really good against Ad Nauseam.
score: 2-0
Round 2: vs Jund
I was mana flooded in both games 1 and 2, which meant that I found it really difficult to deal with my opponents Tarmogoyfs. In game 2, my opponent mulligan'ed down to a leyline of the void, and then drew the abrupt decay to destroy my zombie infestation. I nearly clawed the game back by hardcasting Sedraxis Specter, but his draws were much better than mine and he beat me down with death's shadow .
score: 0-2
He did warn me that this is not a final list, so it may have some problems. The only changes I have made to the decklist above are to add a lightning axe over a darkblast and add another GQ over the 2nd tectonic edge, due to my local meta atm. I am really excited to try this list out and see whether the sideboard Failure // Comply is any good.
(ALSO: The artist of Squee, Goblin Nabob was at the GP, so I wasted no time in getting my squees altered/signed and also buying a print. see attached image)
Anyway, Levy says in his article that Failure // Comply is for Titanshift, Storm and Ad Nauseam matchups, due to scapeshift decks being quite popular at the moment. I recommend reading his article, as he can describe it better than me.

Moved to the Deck Creation. With the new forum update this thread has fallen out of the "Established" criteria. If it puts up results then it can move back up the the Established section.
Also, Jeff Hoogland played some zombie loam again! https://youtu.be/ZMlWEWdEuXg
He seems to really like Start // Finish, so I am gonna try 1 main board again. Dryad Arbor seems like it could be good here as well, so I am going to try a 1-of.
Solid list. Do you have any problems with the low number of discard outlets?
If the opponent didn't get priority after we dredged Finish, I'd gladly run 1-2, because it would kill Scooze. However, I'm not very interested in sorcery-speed removal for saccing a creature. Which matchups does it try to fix of those Pharaoh fails?
I haven't had any problems with discarding so far, although I haven't played any games recently due to exams . I like Start // Finish in theory because it makes tokens for Driven // Despair and also acts as removal.
So I'm pretty interested in this deck and was wondering how the MUs are.
Also curious why many of the recent lists on this thread have no pox in them?
Thanks in advance.

The thing with pox is that you need it in your opening hand or it's just a dead card in the graveyard. The same holds for Infestation, but the latter is a repetitive engine that wins us the game eventually, so it's an acceptable drawback. To the contrary, pox cannot justify the dead GY slots, because it's tempo swing but only if you get lucky. Also, it needs more lands to not hinter us too, which means that we get even less slots for powerful graveyard shenanigans.
It's not a bad card in the archetype by any means, but I'd rather ran Axes/Conflags in its slots, because they're more versatile for grinding.
Matchup-wise, the archetype (at least my builds) is heavily favored against midrange, Despair often does a good job to even the field against combo, whereas Pharaohs/Conflags/Darkblasts decimate aggro game 1.
Our main weakness is that we're incredibly soft to graveyard hate post-board (mostly against the enchantments) and thus we need to board in anti-hate in the blind, without which we are bound to lose.
A short note: the archetype is essentially slower but grindier dredge.
Thanks for the quick reply.

It's really the same as in the last page and my signature (after many iterations, I've been very happy with this setup after I've cut every cute thing for making consistent the most powerful effects available for each slot - perhaps I'd also like a cycling land and decays but don't have the room for more taplands and removal respectively: Bog's in the main, due to no space in the sideboard). So, here you go:
Only 2 squee? I feel like this deck needs 4 since not only is he a great blocker, but he also makes infestation WAYYYY better, as well as conflagrate and late game lootings. I always want to draw at least on copy of squee in my opening hand or mill him as soon as possible because of how good he is, even in multiples.
Is there any reason for playing tec edge instead of playing the 3rd ghost quarter? just curious.
I've been considering just cutting the 2 stinkweed imp from the deck completely in favor of golgari brownscales, because of the life gain. Thoughts on this?

Hi Guys, its great to see more people than just me and maniospas :D.
I agree with maniospas about wayward swordtooth because imo, we already have enough ways to win the game through zombie infestation and conflagrate. In this deck, if it can't be used from the graveyard, it better be an amazing card. Furthermore one of the good things about this deck is that it makes your opponents removal look really bad when they are killing tokens and bloodghasts, so by playing the dinosaur we make our removal-heavy opponents better against us.
Also, playing mortuary mire prevents us from dredging for a turn if you want to get the dinosaur back.
However, I encourage you to try it out and prove me wrong (like maniospas did with driven // despair).
As for hollow one, i'd be interested to see what play-testing shows but i'm not so sure about the card atm.
I play Loam decks a lot - right now i’m on assault loam but that thread’s kinda dead.
I run a list with Hollow one and Flameblade Adept. I find those better at contesting the board, especially when you don’t have the engine together, but since they can’t be played from the grave and they take up 8 slots alone it kinda forces you to commit to a slightly different playstyle.
Heaven // Earth seems interesting, i might try 1 of it in the sideboard. I'm not sure about it though because when i've played the deck, I just use conflagrate to wipe the board.
Again, this is more on the assault loam lines, and I haven't really tried infestation with the HO build. Of course, you could at least switch out the 4 assaults for infestations and probably the 3 edge of autumn for squee.
I'm running exactly one Heaven // Earth on the board currently, mostly as a lategame clean answer to unchecked Master of Waves (not to mention lords, Darkbast is bad vs merfolk and I usually shave down to 1 or none), Young Pyromancer (it can answer the tokens all at once) and Empty the Warrens out of storm. It's also good against Affinity and Soul Sisters, although I'd rather have Darkblast in those matchups. All in all, one copy has felt solid, but it doesn't answer a lot of things we're not already maindecking answers for. If we're looking for a "filler" generic effect in our sideboard though, it's very good, because it randomly hits powerful cards.
Can you share your Hollow list @twakatsonic? I got stuck at freeing up slots to jam Wraiths and inquiries while retaining enough value engines for infestation (4 Loams and 2 Squees are the minimum in my opinion).
First of all, where is smallpox in your deck on a Loam Pox thread.
Secondly, why are you guys not mainboarding Raven's Crime in a Loam Pox deck.
Raven's Loam Pox is a BEAUTIFUL interaction and you're destroying it.
Toss in dark blast and ghost quarter and u have a form of creature control, land control, and hand control. I fail to see why a fetch and a turn 2 smallpox is not your best play.
At this point smallpox is a meta call. There’s a lot of decks that can do a lot with 2 mana, which both means the land sacrifice is less crucial and spell pierce is being played more by blue decks. There’s still decks that smallpox hits hard, but not enough to MB i’d Say. Also it’s worth noting that Raphael levy, the guy in the tbread’s title, eventually cut the smallpoxes and went further into discard strategies.
Also raven’s crime is incredibly slow right now, and there’s better discard to be run in the side and better mainboard answers.
Are there any mods who have the ability to rename this thread to "Raphael Levy's Zombie Loam"? Zombie Loam is a much more fitting name as most of us dropped the smallpox ages ago.
Yeah, it definitely makes sense that a lingering souls build would do better with driven // despair. Would you be able to post your current list?

I apologise for the lack of games, but I did manage to speak to the legend himself Raphael Levy . He recommended driven // despair to me as it pairs really well with a turn 2 zombie infestation.

I run a list with Hollow one and Flameblade Adept. I find those better at contesting the board, especially when you don’t have the engine together, but since they can’t be played from the grave and they take up 8 slots alone it kinda forces you to commit to a slightly different playstyle.
Has anyone tried Heaven // Earth in the side?

4 Flameblade Adept
4 Street Wraith
Enchantment
3 Trade Routes
4 Seismic Assault
Land
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Blood Crypt
1 Hallowed Fountain
2 Overgrown Tomb
1 Steam Vents
1 Breeding Pool
2 Stomping Ground
1 Bloodstained Mire
1 Windswept Heath
2 Wooded Foothills
1 Verdant Catacombs
1 Scalding Tarn
2 Ghost Quarter
1 Forest
1 Island
2 Mountain
2 Swamp
4 Hollow One
Instant
3 Assassin's Trophy
2 Risk Factor
Sorcery
2 Conflagrate
3 Edge of Autumn
4 Faithless Looting
4 Life from the Loam
1 Pack Rat
2 Grim Lavamancer
1 Faerie Macabre
1 Drake Haven
2 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Kolaghan's Command
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Heaven // Earth
2 Smallpox
3 Collective Brutality
Again, this is more on the assault loam lines, and I haven't really tried infestation with the HO build. Of course, you could at least switch out the 4 assaults for infestations and probably the 3 edge of autumn for squee.
Am I right to think that heaven // earth only kills master of waves's tokens, because of the protection from red?

Secondly, why are you guys not mainboarding Raven's Crime in a Loam Pox deck.
Raven's Loam Pox is a BEAUTIFUL interaction and you're destroying it.
Toss in dark blast and ghost quarter and u have a form of creature control, land control, and hand control. I fail to see why a fetch and a turn 2 smallpox is not your best play.
Also raven’s crime is incredibly slow right now, and there’s better discard to be run in the side and better mainboard answers.
