I have been flirting with the idea of taking FoN out of my SB. I usually only bring it in vs phoenix, burn and control match ups. Its terrible vs BGx decks but dammit if it doesnt feel good casting it for free I dont know what does.
As far as this new meta I too am interested to see what the deal is. I played vs mardu shadow yesterday and won 2/3 games off the back of geist. I think the player was still kind of newish to the deck as the cards he sided in seemed questionable.
I think we're gonna see alot of tron and alot of jund after hogaak. I firmly believe Jund will end up being a top deck and possibly the number 1 deck in the coming meta. Perhaps only second to Etron. Though like every cycle, burn tops the charts when things are stirred up so I expect to see a rise in burn afterwards. I wouldnt be surprised if vengevine lives bc hogaak has inspired ppl to use ignored tech like wayfinder and lotleth troll and realize these cards arent bad in that style deck. Lastly, hogaak ban leaves ppl with half a dredge deck so perhaps dredge will spike but quickly be snuffed out via all the grave hate.
I wish so badly that hogaak was banned prior to GP vegas bc there are so so many lists that could do well. Specifically that 5 color niv mizzet deck which has 5-0'd a league each week for the last 3-4 i personally dont like the deck but I think its very interesting and a good thing to have in the meta as its just vastly different.
Also dont forget that boros charm has alot of utility vs UW control, can protect vs sweepers and can pop planeswalkers which hey are loaded up on. Not to mention 4 dmg to face is nothing to scoff at. Just an idea.

I totally agree. I wish they would have banned it before the tournament. I read someone's article saying it wouldn't give pros enough time to practice with decks, but I feel like modern has been around so long and there is so much information they could have played very easily with a week in advance.
I can wait to see the new meta. I have heard a lot of people saying mardu pyromancer will be good. My hope is that we see a good mix of jund, uw control, infect, boggles, etron, tron, affinity, etc. Just a good mix of aggro, combo, control, etc. I do think Jund will be great. I have always felt that when Jund is a top deck then modern is in a great place (even though we have a tough matchup against them).
I am a huge FON fan. It works really well with Geist for protection and also with reveler at the top end to refill the hand. I have three copies in the main and may be adding a 4th. It really depends on the deck. It's best in pure aggro-control (it's now seeing play in boggles and merfolk) or super control that can make up the card advantage loss. It really doesn't fit midrange all that well so it's a tough card to evaluate.
I am excited for Las Vegas, but I am more excited for the SCG event the following weekend.
Get ready boys bc tron and jund are gonna position themselves at the top.
Ive been testing Tale's End and it is very good vs UW control. It has alot of utility and can be used in some very deceptive ways.
ive also tested narsets reversal and its okay. Its a hard counter to dovin's veto so that is a pretty cool trick with it too.
I know i talked sh** about it before but spell snare is proving to be very very good right now. I may even add a 3rd to my SB bc of how good it is.
Have added 2 flash freeze to my board to test with this week and will let you guys know what i see but now with the banning of looting it may turn out to be not as good as I had hoped against the field. However, there are some WUG lists going around and flashfreeze is perfect to deal with them. Not to mention mono G trons ramping is all green so i think that flashfreeze will still perform reasonably well.
still having an assload of trouble vs jund and am now going to try 2 keranos in the side to see whats up.

You're right when you say that it's a spicy B&R announcment. I figured Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis was going to eat a ban, but not Faithless Looting. Yes the card very much could be banned, but I wasn't expecting it. Same with the unbanning of Stoneforge Mystic. While happy for its unbanning I certainly wasn't expecting it here. With that said here's the delver list I'm thinking of running next weekend.
My old Jeskai deck with some SB upgrades. I think Stoneforge Mystic is a fantastic card for the grindy decks and if Jund is going to grow in popularity then I'm hoping it will give us an edge there.
Thats actually a super sick list. i like that transformative side board but sadly i think SFM will do the worst vs Jund.
They have fatal push, lightning bolt, kolaghans command, maelstrom pulse, and assassins trophy main deck. These cards are simply too strong vs a SFM gameplan and really are what makes me super hesitant to go into a SFM plan myself as I dont think SFM will make an impact especially seeing as jund is most likely going to be the most played deck pretty soon. SFM does tutor a card and late game vs jund can be a ball buster but if you draw your artifacts too early then theyll get picked apart by hand disruption and your SFM will be left with nothing to tutor up. I think youll need a little more equipment maybe another batterskull at least and when you play SFM vs jund youre deff gonna need all those FoN's in too to protect your equipment. Another card that could be good now is ojutai's command as has been mentioned before. You should deff get a couple especially since you run delver and Snappy too. Theyre super cheap so Im gonna get a playset.
EDIT: been hearing alot about D&T becoming really powerful with SFM's unbanning. This would merit running 3 spell snares as E&T runs chalice too. So Abrade and spell snare should be in somewhere in the 75.
EDIT: been hearing alot about D&T becoming really powerful with SFM's unbanning. This would merit running 3 spell snares as E&T runs chalice too. So Abrade and spell snare should be in somewhere in the 75.
I definetly like the idea of running at least 2-3 Spell Snare in our decks, and Abrade has been one of my favorite inclusions because of its ability to fight Aether Vial decks plus affinity decks (this now includes SFM decks now as well). I'm wondering what I'd shave for the spell and the first thing that comes to mind would be the Dispel because the main deck is already full of counters. How many Abrades would you suggest we run?
Ojutai's Command is certainly interesting, and I can see it as a one of somewhere in the board. Plays well with both snappy and SFM, maybe shave the main deck Electrolyze for it? Just thoughts, but this is all preliminary brainstorming so I'll be testing it over the course of the next couple of weeks.
That sure was a spicy BR update. I am super excited. I will definitely test a jeskai stoneblade style list, but will likely stick with the delver deck.
ccc1522- I love the spicy ideas with Dawn charm and Flashfreeze. I am in the same boat as you about Spell Snare. I have pooped on that card a ton, but it will be amazing right now. Hitting wrenn and six, sfm, goyf, bob, some counter magic, and the list goes on. The format will likely have a lot of Wrenn and six and SFM for at least a little while so we probably want a couple of copies of snare in our deck right now. It's another one of those cards that is great when it's great and terrible when it's terrible. We have a deck that is always adapting to the meta. That is one of the aspects of our deck that is a strength and a weakness in some sense.
ManDolphin- Love the list. The only difference I would have would be FON instead of logic knot. I also agree that Abrade is a must right now. Humans will likely rise and I have heard a lot of talk of Death and Taxes and a TON of talk about a new UW Urza deck being very strong with SFM. It's still very early, but I would definitely want some maindeck artifact hate right now.
As for my deck I am taking out the electrolyze and the 20th land and am adding back in a copy of Distortion Strike and Spell Snare. The meta is going to be super midrange to start so I want a way to go through the opponent with my Geists and Swiftspears. I will be taking a look at the list again tonight, but off the top of my head that are some changes I want to make. I may try to fit in another copy of snare if I have another cut.
It was me that brought up Ojutai's Command with SFM in the past. I tested SFM in jeskai before the BR announcement like 6 months ago and I was super suprised with how great Ojutai's command was with SFM and Snapcaster in the deck. It was just sooooo much value. I think that card is going to really take off if a UW SFM deck catches on.
Yes credit where credit is due it was curd bros who brought it up to be played with SFM.
Okay so im going back to my standard
2x purge
2x c. rejection
2x abrade
In the sideboard.
I think 2x abrade should be enough artifact hate when run alongside spell snares and c. rejection.
I think wer gonna see alot of burn and jund in the coming weeks as well as alot of random SFM brews coming through from mardu, to UW to even abzan and mono W. This is actually really exciting.
Once everything settles i think we will see tron, jund and burn leading the charts. Get ready for mardu shadow and esper sfm builds as well as I believe ppl arent gonna ignore the obvious synergy of SFM and unearth plus what better way to protect her than too play T1 hand destruction.
To add to that i think ppl are gonna be trying giver of runes as well so maybe a side board forked bolt wouldnt be a bad idea and if we see a rise in mardu shadow well.. we could give archmage’s charm a try again to see whats up.
My sideboard will probably look like this.
2x purge
2x c. Rejection
2x abrade
2x flashfreeze
1x thundermaw hellkite
1x stormbreath dragon
1x engineered explosives
1x cryptic command
1x dovin’s veto
2x steel of the god head
Ive never tried stormbreath before but i think that D&T has no way to deal with it apart from dismember so wel see how it goes
Sorry if I came off like an ass. I didn't need credit. We all work together here. I have gained a ton from all of you in terms of my deck. I am currently trying some of your spicy ideas. I LOVE Stormbreath Dragon in a SFM meta. That's a great call I hadn't thought of
I think you are spot on in your analysis of the meta. I think your Steel of the Godhead tech will wreck midrange decks. I added Distortion Strike back into the deck. I typically do that when Jund is popular. With both dragons, steel of the godhead, and 2 celestial Purge I think you will be able to handle jund much more easily than most jeskai decks.
As for tron, we already have a pretty decent matchup against them so I am not too worried about that. I am currently deciding on adding another copy of Stony Silence to my deck for SFM decks, tron, artifact decks, and especially the Urza decks. I am afraid someone is going to breack the SFM + Urza combination and have a crazy good deck. I currently have wear//tear, abrade, hurkyl's recall, and stony silence for artifact decks (plus all of the ususal counter magic) so it shouldn't be too bad of a matchup. I could see a Urza deck being the #1 deck. Possibly an esper build with tezzeret. I am going to keep my eye on that.
I am kind of waiting to see how things shake out a bit to see where I want to go with my deck and sideboard. I have been trying different stuff for midrange/jund. I have tried Chandra, Fire Artisan, Experimental Frenzy, other planeswalkers, and even Leyline of Combustion, but nothing has felt super great yet. Chandra was the best I think. I will continue to tweak the sideboard.
Is anyone thinking of trying a jeskai stoneblade style deck? I have a playset of stoneforge so I could give it a try, but I really like my current build so I will likely stick with it instead and see what happens. I am hoping for a meta full of creature based decks with random combo based decks sprinkled in. I have a feeling we will have a very cyclical meta like aggro is hot, then midrange, then control ,then combo and the circle of lie continues. That is really how the meta is supposed to go anyways. I will stop rambling now, but it is a really fun time to be a modern player.
You did not come of as such bro but I had to give you credit for a good idea.
Stony silence will pull alot of weight now for sure so I may get a couple for my side too. Ill have to see what happens first though bc I have been content with C. Rejections instead. Distortion strike should also be very good vs E&T and D&T save for their flickerwisp's and displacers. That reminds me flicker wisp and thalia could be other reasons to run a forked bolt for anyone having trouble against them.
As for steel of the god head. I changed to two bc they were so so good vs phoenix decks. They could not keep up with the swing. Another reason is that I really needed a way to gain life while putting myself in a position to win. Timely reinforcements only buys time it doesn't give you a threat and neither did many other life gain cards so I decided to go up to two on the steel and its worked so far but now that phoenix is probably gone ill reevaluate that decision as having the steel flickerwisped off of geist isnt all that cool. I am hesistant to try it in vs jund bc they just have way too many ways to disrupt the combo but holy sh** great news. I beat jund yesterday for the first time since W6 was released and you know how? All my burn spells went to face. I didnt worry about their creatures, their planeswalkers, nothing. I sent all burn up top and I squeezed out a win.
It was actually pretty crazy. the board state was 6 lands on my side with a cryptic and ligtning helix in hand. Their board was a goyf, a bloodbraid elf, a lili and a W6 with like 4-5 cards in hand.
I was at 5 life they were at 7.
Their turn they tick W6 down to ping me for 1 (which is just dam absurd the utility W6 has) then ticked lili up. I cast CC tap all creatures and draw a spell snare. I pitch the spell snare they pitch land. 2nd main they throw a bolt at my face, and I throw my helix at theirs taking them down to 4 and I swing in next turn with a colonnade. he did not have a push or a trophy so that was game. Felt like the luckiest but most intense well planned win in the world to be honest. Sadly we only got to play one so I didnt get to test out flashfreeze vs jund yet.
but again thanks to you for the advice on going full burn. I actually was thinking to myself at the beginning of the match what you said about burning them down. Solid advice.
Hi, I really like your first draft, CurdBros!
I'd love to see this deck in action. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy the missing cards on MTGO.
I am still playing Jeskai Saheeli and with that deck I was super happy when I heard that Looting is gone. A slower meta is perfect for my combo.
1000 Felidar Guardians don't care about a Batterskull
(I am also enjoying wins with Teferi's Puzzle Box & Narset)
I added Abrade and Spell Snare main and played a match today on MTGO... of course my opponent played SFM.
You can watch the first game here: Video
Interactive Magic at it's best.
I am sure I didn't play every turn correct. I'd love to hear from you what you would have played different and why.
Second game I lost against Choke and Strip Mines (Leonin Arbiter + Ghost Quarter) but third game my opponent kept a greedy 1 land hand with Aether Vial which I destroyed T2 with my Abrade. He couldn't find a second land fast enough and I won the match.
UW seems stronger than GW for SFM. I am looking forward to see how this matchup will play out...
Nice list Curdbros. I would love to see batterskull slapped on a geist in the near future.
Stevomat I agree with your opinion on UW SFM being stronger than GW. I think that SFM will find her home in esper colors as that color suite give her the most opportunity to flourish in my opinion.
EDIT: just watched you match. That was awesome man. I cant believe they had an answer to the puzzle box. But GW company has gotten alot of tech lately but since Todd Stevens is gone I guess theres no one representing the deck anymore.

I brewed a deck earlier today that's pure Jeskai Stoneblade without Delver of Secrets in it. It's more control than tempo, but it's a starting point.
I really like the idea of Delver of Secrets paired with SFM as both are must answer threats early and require your opponent to make a difficult choice CurdBros! Whenever playing a delver deck I always feel bad going below 28 instant/sorceries because it hampers its ability to flip, but with SFM it could just be another equip target.
StevomatUWR: I'll check out your video after I get off work!
EDIT: just watched you match. That was awesome man. I cant believe they had an answer to the puzzle box. But GW company has gotten alot of tech lately but since Todd Stevens is gone I guess theres no one representing the deck anymore.
I was wondering why he would attack Saheeli and not Narset... it was because he had the perfect answer
ManDolphin- I love your deck idea. That is probably a better suited sFM deck and that is about where I see most people starting in terms of UWx stoneforge decks. More of a midrange build is likely the best starting point.
Stevomat- I did the same thing. I added Spell Snare and Distortion Strike and added another copy of [a]Abrade[/c] to the sideboard. At least for now, Wrenn and Six and SFM are going to be everywhere so spell snare is a great option. It also his a ton of other stuff like goyf, neobrand, goryo's vengeance, blighted agent, thing in ice, snapcaster mage, bob, mana leak, logic knot, scooge, and the list goes on.
That video was nutty. That is what magic is supposed to look like. Back and fourth with a lot of decisions. A bet your opponent was none to happy when he finally gained control of the board only to loose the following turn to the combo.
Gofytomcat- lovely midrange style jeskai list per usual. When I see a gofytomcat list I know that it's your list and your style even before I see who posted it.
I tested my jeskai stoneblade deck last night for just a few games and it was really awesome and fun to play with. I will test it again tonight, but I also want to get some testing in with my jeskai prowess deck. My prowess deck is the one I have worked on for years so it's more important to me, but it's always fun to play with new toys.
Quick update for anyone interested. went 4-0 last Saturday with Jeskai Stoneblade beating G Tron, Grixis Control, Burn, and GB Elves. Here's the list I ran which felt really good, however I almost feel there should either be a 24th land or more cantrips. Not sure which. Tell me what you think!
Note: The Mu Yanling, Sky Dancer was in the SB mostly for fun. If I went to a bigger tournament then it would be replaced with something else.
Great find ccc1522. Thanks for sharing! That is some intereting spice in this list. I rarely see Young Pyro and Geist in the same mainboard. Really interesting stuff.
ManDolphin- Congrats on the 4-0 my man! That is awesome. The ban list announcement is paying immediate dividends! I always love adding a little personal twist to a deck list. Very cool list and I always happy to hear one of our jeskai brothers/sisters going 4-0!

To the first great news. I come on top 3 in our own league. Finish at third place with my new deck.
I was so happy. This matches was.
Round 1. Jeskai vs Elfs = 2-0
Round 2. Jeskai vs black devetion = 2-1
Round 3. Jeskai vs red deck wins = 3-1
Round 4. Jeskai vs mono white taxes = 0-3
Round 5. Jeskai vs devoted combo = 3-2.
So yeah it was nice. Mono taxes was so hard and my draw was awful.

4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Stoneforge Mystic
3 Geist of Saint Traft
1 Vendilion Clique
Instant/Sorcery(22)
4 Opt
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Path to Exile
2 Spell Snare
2 Lightning Helix
3 Logic Knot
3 Cryptic Command
1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Artifacts (2)
1 Sword of Feast and Famine
1 Batterskull
Lands (23)
4 Flooded Strand
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Hallowed Fountain
2 Steam Vents
1 Sacred Foundry
3 Celestial Colonnade
2 Field of Ruin
3 Island
1 Plains
1 Mountain
23 lands may be too many for this deck, and I want to fit in another Vendilion Clique to fill out the threats. I would either put Sword of Fire and Ice or Sword of Truth and Justice in the sideboard for more equipment on top of another Batterskull, but this all requires testing of course.
4 Snap
4 Resto/ Lightning Angel
2 Vendilion Clique
4 Bolt
4 Helix
2 Abrade
2 Electrolyze/ FoN/ Veto/ Spell Pierce/ Spell Snare / Boros Charm (Flex Slot)
4 unsubstantiate
1 Chandra
1 Elspeth
1 Steel of the Godhead
23 lands
I was wondering why he would attack Saheeli and not Narset... it was because he had the perfect answer

I added Spell Snare and Abrade main because of SFM. Unfortunately there's only space for one Puzzle Box.
