Familiar's Ruse doesn't seem to fit here, as we have a lack of etb triggers. Getting extra triggers off Tallowisp wouldn't make it worthwhile. There's no real space for it in the main, and Negate is better for the side. It just doesn't work in this deck, we don't need hard-counters as much due to how aggressive we can be.
Well, getting extra triggers off Tallowisp, reusing Rattlechains, re-buffing Mausoleum Wanderer, and in some circumstances re-using spell Queller all seem like perks with Familiar's ruse. Having an extra card to pitch to the Shoals might occasionally become relevant as well. Probably not worth it, but in lists like this I'm not a huge fan of remand, so I thought it might be worth discussing.
Could be worth testing in a meta that is heavy on control/ramp, and light on bolts (making shining shoal gameplan nonworthwhile as a mainboard stragtegy)I guess. I play Familiar's Ruse decks and I feel those etb triggers are not worthwhile, strikes me as simply too flimsy, but I suppose there's some merit.
I'm pretty sure Mana Leak would be stronger than Familiar's Ruse, assuming one has a fast enough clock and hasn't crammed Paths.
Why aren't you a fan of Remand here? The card strikes me as glue for the deck, the draw component of it is critical.
A temporary counter seems better in either a list that is a tad more focused on tempo, or in a combo deck that simply needs a little bit of time and a few specific cards to win on the spot.
I haven't tested remand with all the new spirits, though, so maybe it's better now.
Remand can be quite effective in control decks that have some sort of gameplan to establish. Tallowisp strikes me as a tempo deck anyway, one only needs to buy time to draw tallowisp/geist/whatever piece required, which Remand does beautifully.
That's actually pretty cool. I also think Reach Through Mists has a place in the Tallowisp version. CMC U to draw 2 cards at an instant speed looks powerful.
I tried the list and quite dislike it. Not sure what Noble and Ninja and are doing in it. Reach Through Mists isn't worthwhile, clutters up the deck too much and demands a build with more enchantments than desired.

I tried it out, and it's great. It's a cantrip at worse, which in nature filters out the deck. and a 1CMC idyllic tutor with tallowisp out, that is powerful. It also does great things with disrupting shoal/shining shoal, and keeping 1 blue source out.
I wouldn't know how you'd be able to even fit in something like that when running the complete shoal package. What would you cut, Spell Queller? Mausoleum Wanderer? Surely you wouldn't be able to cut much of the enchantment package if that's what you wish to run. Remand? A colourless land? The deck is super tight.

Took out Drogskol. Never felt as if I needed it. A well placed Spell Queller is more than enough to push through the tempo game, as well as stop O-Stone and Verdicts. It also allows me to cover CMC 1-4. Reality smasher can be stopped with Angelic Destiny/Weight of Conscience. My FNM 2-2 Beat Eldrazi and Taxes and Burn lose to Bant Eldrazi and U-Tron. And I felt I could have bested both Eldrazi and U-Tron if I played a bit differently.
Are any of you still playing this deck? I saw recently that someone won a 64 person rank two tournament with tallowisp here's the list that was played:
I think it’s an anomaly. There’s almost nothing new in the list you linked, with the exception of Curious Obsession. That said, I haven’t been playing, so maybe the current metagame is favorable to a tempo/control based list. I mean, if you’ve got the cards sleeve it up, but I wouldn’t invest based on the fact that it spiked a small tournament. Glad to see Tallowisp hanging in there, though!
