So already I'm seeing Dywen's Elite as a pseudo-Empty the Warrens in the Curio Combo. Just bounce him and instead of a card draw you get a new 1/1 elf each time. Not only that, but the new elves can eventually tap for mana with Heritage Druid. So it is a route to infinite mana too.
I really want Sylvan Messenger to work, but only so I can play my Apocalypse copies. It wouldn't really work in my current build as I don't have the mass of creatures.
Good lord! I never thought so many amazing cards would be spoiled. I expected ONE :). I may literally have to remove cards I thought were amazing (Coiling Oracle, Garruk, etc) because some new options are better!
This may help push us to Known competitive level...I felt my deck was competitive before...

It definitely feels like elf Christmas today, but it will take time to test. As destroyermaker points out, I may need to add my Regal Force back in. Good time to have fun as a brewer.
They both pair well with Shaman too. Flood with elves, cast Shaman for 5-9 life loss and attack for lethal. Would've been nice if Shaman gave you life too, but with the new False Cure that would probably be a liability.
I literally bought a set yesterday at $1.39 each because I was going to play Shaman even if it was 4-5 CMC :). I'm glad I did.
P.S. Shaman allows me to remove my non-elves (Eternal Witness and Primmal Commamd) as I can now deal near infinite damage with Shaman alone. Learning more and more as I test.
Rushing the Primer to be up tomorrow at thr latest (as I think we're gonna start getting more viewers/questions, etc.)
Cool. Though I can hardly imagine how you can narrow stuff down now! Good luck (and thanks for all the effort you've put into elves already!)
My Intruder Alarm deck keeps morphing and I'm not sure what makes sense or not since there are so many good options that goldfish very well..
I know! I played with both last night and they are unbelievable!! Half the games I won without combo-ing at all! Few notes about my deck (as its a little different:
1. Dwynen's Elites is amazing. It has synergies with all of the combo pieces, but also gives you more elves for Ezuri and almost most importantly more elves for an overrun Garruk. I had three different games last night where I just bounced an elite a couple times and then overran them all the next turn.
2. The way my deck works, you can actually do near infinte damage (and with the Witness in the sideboard actual infinite life loss. I won't go to far down the rabbit hole (as I'm making a mini-primers) but Because of the Garruk's you can keep untapping lands and because of the enchantments even if you don't have a black source you have access to black mana)...so decks like soul sisters and infinite life combos are no problem.
Have a big long thing written out; but have a few questions...
1. How many of each of the new cards are you running?
Right now, I'm running 2x Shaman and 2x Elites; but I'm not certain what the perfect number is. Mine being a "devotion-centric" list it is a little different. Here is my current list:
I originally thought I would just remove Coiling Oracle and run 4x Dwynen's Elite; but the "draw a card" clause is ridiculously powerful in this deck. It is so important that you QUICKLY draw into the combo and in the grindy match ups you really want to have as much card advantage as possible. The removal of Eternal Witness already cost a little advantage; so I didn't want to go too far down into the aggro route. Having said this, it still is going to require testing to see how many games I would prefer one over the other (as if one is strictly better than the other I will just run them; however if they both have their own merit than I will run both. The thing is, in my deck I tend to want 1x Dwynen's Elite, but not two. Also, the more "cantrip" elves you have; the better likelihood you have of hitting any of the cards in the list (as you dig like crazy). At this point I know one is staying for sure, most likely both are staying (either in a 2/2 split or a 3/1 split).
The sideboard is all about removing their hate for me and dealing with other combo decks. This deck crushes fair decks and has little problems with control (especially post board); as we just draw too many cards and throw too much at them...the only issues the deck ever runs into is pure hate for my plan and/or if they can slow me down and combo off. Black actually added SOOOO much to the board and made it a far superior sideboard.
I know there are other lists out there too; so PLEASE post your list (even if you are just testing it). We've had some amazing cards given to us (Shaman, Elite, and don't forget Sylvan Messenger who can be good with Curio in a list full of more elves).
Can't wait to see what everyone is playing! Combo elves really took huge strides forward with this spoiler. I cannot believe how much better this deck got. I thought it was great before; but these new cards have done two extremely important things:
The multiple lines ensure that the opponent never really knows what they should be trying to deal with. We can draw so many cards and come from so many angles that they will have numerous choices they have to make...and the whole time they have to keep us off the infinite combos!
2. Allowed us to play fewer non-elf spells. In the past and up until this spoiler, having infinite mana and/or infinite draws was great; but you had to play a non-elf win-con once you had the combo set (i.e. Witness+Command, Craterhoof, etc.). Shaman of the Pack solved this issue.
These two factors alone greatly increased the tier potential of combo elves.
P.S. I am very seriously considering running 19 lands (and a total of 61 cards). I haven't loved 19 lands and 60 and it may now be more important to hit the second land drop...so this could be one of those very rare situations where 61 cards is best).
Second Question...How are these cards with the Intruder Alarm build?
We haven't heard much about the Intruder Alarm / Beck list for a while. Obviously these cards are amazing with Cloudstone Curio; but are they also helpful to Alarm?
P.P.S. Yes I do know that Damping Matrix "turns off" both Arbor Elf and Ezuri, Renegade Leader...but it is FAR worse for the decks I bring it in against (and I of course side out Ezuri when I play it)...it hits so many decks; many of which are my toughest match ups AND hits CoCo Elves (which honestly can be one of the tougher match ups as they win almost solely with Ezuri).
The plan of the deck is simple: chain Visionary, Stampede and Messenger to draw a ton of cards and put a bunch of Elves on the battlefield.
Elite and Messenger get slightly worse post-board because you have to side out Elves for non-Elves. You should still have a good number of Elves in your deck postboard though.
I can live with Essence Warden main since Elite triggers it twice. 2 Elves in 1 card is crazy good.
I pulled the SB from the GP winning decklist. I didn't have enough space for all the white SB cards so I cut that color completely.
Well....they just spoiled some cards that drastically effect other forms of Elves (Hallowed Moonlight hits Chord and Collected Company and Infinite Obliteration hits Ezuri...) and can hurt us too...
Also, it looks like Genesis Wave can somewhat dodge Hallowed Moonlight -- you could still use it to put down non-creature permanents making the spell not a total loss in the face of a Moonlight.
Yeah...it certainly hurts the Wave though...I'm just thankful it doesn't totally end it Like you said, at least I get my lands, Curio's, and enchantments (so hopefully I can go on an Abundant Growth loop...but it still is no fun! ha
I don't think they totally hose CoCo Elves...it will still be a great and competitive deck...but they certainly do hurt it quite a bit (given two colors now have better options against it). I have always had a preference for the combo version (just fits the way I like to play); but I do understand the power the CoCo version has as well and completely see why it has been so great.
I like your idea. I don't think the whole "elf token" phase is done yet (more cards will be spoiled)....and I wouldn't be surprised if they looked to Nath of the Gilt-Leaf for inspiration when they developed the elf archetype for origins.
There's always the Weird Harvest build. =). We cast our creatures the old fashioned way.
Still worried about Infinite Obliteration naming Heritage Druid. But it looks like the community might be dismissing that card. Perhaps I'll have to put Riftsweeper back in my deck/sideboard if it becomes an issue.
Hello All,
I am typically a Red Mage, but I must say both Elves, in Legacy and Modern, and Goblins in Modern should be Tier 1 decks now with the new cards they just printed/reprinted. I brought it up in the Burn primer, but was basically ignored.
With all that said I think Elves is a serious contender for the top deck. I am gonna shelf my Burn deck for now and sleeve up Elves. How many Essence Wardens do you think should be main?
We all feel Elves can be a contender with the new Origin's spoilers. With that said the new elves from Origin's are making it more difficult to find room for Essence Warden. Right now I'd suggest the correct number is zero to one for most Combo builds.
Also, to let you know there is another Elf primer, also run by CurdBros here. It is for the deck that most resembles the current GP winner. That deck is closer affinity in how it plays, with fast hand dumps and cards that let your creatures deal damage quickly.
Thoughts
Out of the stats the one that stands out most to me is the number of turn 3 wins on the draw. 100 games isn't significant, but this points to what we already know that card draw is very important in finding our combo pieces.
I definitely advocate adding Shaman of the Pack or Research // Development in the deck. There were several games where that card would've push the winning turn up by one. So I'll have to figure out what to cut to add one in. Unfortunately I didn't keep statistics in my spreadsheet on how many games this would've helped.
The deck also removed some of its answers like Bow of Nylea and Root Maze to become faster and more consistant. I like how that feels for game one. Most decks won't have their sweepers like Anger of the Gods until post board, so anything to speed up game one is great.
Dwynen's Elite is the real deal. This allowed many more hands to be kept knowing a second elf would be generated. Either that token can be used along with Heritage Druid or the Elite is mana neutral with Archdruid. I can't advocate this card enough. Also, note that Elite bounces himself with Curio and is a mana sink. His token ETB triggers Curio too, so he can be bounced back. You now have an effect that reads, "1G: put a 1/1 Elf Warrior token onto the battlefield. Activate this ability only when you can cast a sorcery."
The percentage of games with mulligans is high at 29% for all 100 games, but since this is a combo deck it can easily pull out wins even after mulling to 5. I was much more aggresive mulling on the Draw for two reasons. First getting an extra card definitely made me feel safer dumping hands that didn't look like they'd go anywhere. Also, the 50 draw games were played after the 50 on the play. So It was easier to see what hands weren't keepable.
With that I'm excited for the potential new mulligan rule. It can only help our deck with the number of mulligans that the deck takes. Any extra advantage will help.
Questions
The big one I have right now is what to take out to make room for Shaman. Everything seems so important, even the Abundant Growths with their cantrip and devotion.
I did not even think that the Curio trigger would occur like that! looks like I'm upping my count of Elites! I really do need to try Weird Harvest again...do you find it superior to Genesis Wave? I'm always worried I'm giving my opponent too much; but if you win a vast majority of the turns you play it; then I don't care what I give them
My list is VERY close to yours Irmo (we have subtle differences like I run Utopia Sprawls over Elvish Mystic and Arbor Elf or Llanowar Elves; but they're really just 8 1-drop ramp permanents...I run Genesis Wave where you run Weird Harvest...and I play Shaman of the Pack where you have Archdruid....) The "core" of the deck (and how they play out) are very similar. I'm so happy to see the "Abundant Growth Loop" in another deck. I know you were a super early adopter of it as well...and it's so hard to explain to people how amazing it is until they play it!
Thanks for getting the primer up! I can't wait to see what is in those sections, but it already looks good.
Yes, they do look similar. I copied your devotion build after Temur Sabertooth was spoiled and added Nykthos along with Garruk. As for Temur Sabertooth main, I think the new Elves in Origins definitely push him out unless you are running Weird Harvest. He is essential for the combo. Also, I'll be making a few tweaks to the deck soon. I have to add Research or Shaman back in and figure out what I want in the sideboard. I haven't played vs. Jund with Kolaghan's Command yet, so I'm wondering if I should bring in protection like Avoid Fate or Apostle's Blessing.
I also notice Ezuri is out of your main too. Seems like he isn't pulling his weight in the combo build. I always found him a bit awkward to cast. I like your list. I've been meaning to play my build, but each time I draw Weird Harvest, use it as Wave. To see how that plays.
About Elite, it took me a while to see that too. Not until around Game 60. It really upped his game when you can drop 6 mana and get a 2/2 and 3 1/1s.
I'm excited for where this deck is headed and the potential that Origins and Zendikar bring.
Yeah...Ezuri is amazing. Having an elf that is also a mans sink is huge...but I was running into a similar issue; in early draws he was somewhat clunky for a pure combo build. He may still be useful as a 1-of (as he's a great card and mana sink for the Infinire mana); and I will side him in for a TON of games 2 and 3. I'm just not sure he's needed in game one.
I know! There's going to be even MORE elves in BFZ...at this point I don't even know what else we could use (or what we would take out!) but there's no such thing as too many good elves

Cast and resolve Heritage Druid Cast and resolve Elite, place Curio Trigger on the stack, resolve the token trigger, and place the Curio trigger on the stack With the Curio Triggers on the stack tap for 3 mana Resolve the triggers and return Elite and Druid to your hand
Note you are in the same game state, but with 1 extra tapped token. Proceed to make 7,000 tapped tokens.
If your hand also had Shaman of the Pack and you could generate B, you can now win that same turn.
I christen this Storm Elves =). Shaman = Grapeshot and Elite = Empty the Warrens
1. Dwynen's Elites is amazing. It has synergies with all of the combo pieces, but also gives you more elves for Ezuri and almost most importantly more elves for an overrun Garruk. It forces us to have at least two win-cons...fortunately we have Shaman of the Pack and Ezuri, Renegade Leader (and Garruk Wildspeaker in some builds...and Kessig Wolf Run in others)...
