So, I made day 2 of Grand Prix Toronto, some of you may have heard of the feature match of Emeria Control vs Burn. For those of you have not https://www.twitch.tv/videos/227979044, That was me against Jon Stern. Some plays looked questionable but were actually thought out. Abeit, I was operating on less than three hours of sleep the night before day two. Anyway...
(G2) - Why not block, and trade, Goblin Guide with Lone Missionary?
I was playing around a second land into Lightning Bolt the second Lone Missionary with Phantasmal Image on the stack
(G2) - Why not shock and cast Gideon of the Trials?
The game was over, my opponent was fishing for information, they had not seen GotT yet, so I concealed it
(G3) - Why Gideon and then why emblem instead of ticking up to prevent Goblin Guide?
I was at five life, I played around Searing Blaze by playing Gideon and Skullcrack by not preventing damage, this line guaranteed that I untapped as long as my opponent did not draw into Lightning Bolt or Lava Spike
(G3) - Why Ghost Quarter end of turn, this line is largely seen as punt. Reviewing the footage, I have to say, that I agree. It was sloppy play and a greedy line, but I did it intentionally. I'll walk you through my thought process. I only saw two sequences. Line 1) I untap hit my fifth land drop and cast a [/c]Court Hussar and hope for one of my five outs in 2 Lone Missionary, 2 Negate or 1 Dispel
Line 2) I Ghost Quarter EoT, hope that my opponent has nothing, I untap hit my fourth land drop, Wall of Omens and Spreading Sea's his other Sacred Foundry hoping to fade a draw step so that I can set up.
In hindsight, the line I took was incorrect, and therefore a punt. I'm punished by Boros Charm, Skullcrack, and Lightning Helix. It was a gamble that I felt that based on the information I was given at the time, was justified. My opponent had a greater probability of hitting a land, a Searing Blaze, a Destructive Revelry, or an Eidolon of the Great Revel then Skull Crack, Boros Charm, or Lightning Helix, especially considering they had just burned a helix to deal with GotT.
This was my thinking, however, looking back at the video, it was still a punt. Instead of GotT on turn four, I should have played Wall, Spreading Sea's. Then cast the Gideon and played another Wall of Omens on turn five. I'm trying to analyse my decisions. I think that, at the time I was unnecessarily playing around Searing Blaze and afraid of a Lightning Bolt in response to the Spreading Sea's on his Sacred Foundry. Doing the math though, I was still dead with that line anyway. If I assumed Lightning Bolt, then Gideon was already useless, I'd have lost an additional two more life from Goblin Guide, putting me to three and dead from any burn spell, should he draw it.
This is my main deck and I was excited to see it on day two and on video!
So for you Fincown... don't beat yourself up. You made day 2! That's more than most people in these forums can say! I know I've never even been to a GP, so kudos to you for going and doing well! Plus... burn isn't always easy for us to deal with...
Thanks, for the compliment I really do appreciate it! So at the GP there were only two basic archetypes that I played against. Linear aggro decks, and Control varients such as Elves, Affinity, Humans, Burn, every build of UW/X and multiple Mardu Pyromancer lists. I also played against Storm and Grixis Death Shadow. I ended up 9 - 5 - 1, should have been 10 - 5 but my Jeskai Geist opponent killed me in turns and wanted to deny me the possibility of prizing and a pro point because of salt. I lost to Storm, Mardu Pyromancer, Burn, Burn, and Elves, because of this I have decided to revamp my sideboard to include four Leyline of Sanctity. Leyline would have been instrumental against all decks, aside from Elves, which just killed me before turn four. A new tentative board will include 2 Dispel, 2 Relic of Progenitus 2 Sorcerous Spyglass,2 Stony Silence, 2 Disdainful Stroke, 4 Leyline of Sanctity, and a Settle the Wreckage. My reasoning is, I still want four pieces of counter magic, three pieces of graveyard hate, enough hate for Tron, Titanshift, and Storm. Leyline should give me enough time to set up against Burn, Titan Shift, BR(x), and Storm. I've been testing on modo last night and this morning and this has been working well for me. I won against, Titan Shift, Storm, and Pyromancer.
I'm conflicted on the Mardu Pyromancer, I believe it to be a good matchup overall, even without leyline. The reason why I believe I lost was because of mulligans to five two out of three games and my opponent having multiple discard effects. It is nice to be able to just slot out four Flickerwisp for four Leylines though.
I think I could have played a lot tighter, in day 2 and that possibly would have won me more games. I was extremely tired the entire event and I'm sure that effected my judgement too.
Hey everyone. It's been awhile since I was active but I wanted to share what I'm currently running. I've had a lot of success with a GW version than I ever did with UW and wanted to know everyone's opinions. After multiple top 8's in local events I feel like GW is just stronger currently. List is below.
I really like the five of split between Flickerwisp and Renigade Rallier. Although I feel that Flickerwisp should be prioritized as the three of because it has evaision and more utility.I found when I ran G/W that boards got clogged and stalled fast. Keep in mind that because you can't play Detention Spheretokens will be more difficult to handle. Consider Declaration in Stone somewhere in the 75. I'm not sold that you really need three of Kitchen Finks.it's great, but I would rather make space for a one of silver bullet like Ramanup Excivator, Wayward Swordtooth, Tireless Tracker, or Nissa,Voice of Zendikar. I dislike you're choice in manabase, three Canopy Vista along with Emeria is six comes into play tapped lands, I would cut two and add one more fetchland. It's possible that you want another forest, but I don't think you really need it. Between main and side Eternal Witness is the only green intesive spell without a hybridized mana cost. Beyond that, I just hope that you have fun with the deck. Let us know how it runs.
I really want to get Bant Emeria Titan working, but I don't have a lot of time to playtest. I feel like green offers some really good ramp options to get to 7 plains faster, but blue offers the better Supreme Verdict and Detention Sphere
Grats Fincown! Really happy one of us made it so far - and you had no byes! Would you care to share with us your 75? What are your thoughts going forward with the unbans?
Me on the other hand crashed and burned quite hard - had 2 byes and went 0-2-1 promptly out of the tournament. I don't think I played too well in my matchups and mixed in with some below average draws led me to an early exit. Definitely feels bad to not day 2 with my pet deck (for the second time) and was a bit discouraging - but hearing that you did well and were on stream has given me some renewed hope to continue playing this. However I doubt my friends will let me play this for the trios GP in 3 months lol
There are some changes I would make to the deck, such swapping out a Ghost Quarter for a Windswept Heath. Five colorless lands led to more mulligans than you would expect. Windswept Heath also allows you to play more around a mainboard Blood Moon. I also think based on my matches in the Grand Prix, that I will remove Elspeth, Sun's Champion. She never really impressed me and was a liability in a lot of matches. I think for now I'd like to test Kami of False Hope again, as a meta call for the hyper-aggressiveness of my meta. Beyond that as I've said, my sideboard will also be revamped, I've warped it to provide more answers for JtMS.
@xatanael There are many pro's and con's to each build. Jeskai allows for a faster finish, has a nice surprise factor and can fight from multiple axis's. That forces your opponent to leave in, and bring in otherwise sub-optimal cards i.e. Path to Exile, and Pithing Needle which dilute their deck. The downside is it's somewhat less reliable and the three color manabase is more painful and less resilient to Blood Moon.
I really think it's to each their own, I've played multiple Emeria builds and they all have their own unique flare that makes them different. Not necessarily any better or worse then other versions but different. I feel like UW is the most consistent, WG is the most powerful, UWR is the fastest, and mono W is budget friendly.
Thanks, yeah I definitely got blindsided by Vexing Devil. That was actually the second time I was caught completely off gaurd. The reason I lost game one was because I was on the mana denial plan with SS and GQ, my line assumed only two basic mountains. The old 2 Mountain 3 Sacred Foundry 1 Stomping Grounds package. John was a really cool about it, and explained. You can't tell but we were chatting all through the match. His reasoning for the third mountain was it was a response to the growing popularity of Field of Ruin.
You are completely correct. Jace is what mainstream UW(x) needed to provide more consistent card advantage to compete with our Emeria, and also a faster clock. We can not leave an unchecked Jace on the field. The upside to our style of play is that we do utilize more creatures than our opponents and should be able to keep a JtMS off the field in roughly 1 - 2 turns. In the absolute worst case scenario JtMS only exiles the library, so a Gideon of the Trials with an emblem and active Emeria can still steal a game. That scenario is a little unrealistic though, UW control has access to Cryptic Command and Detention Sphere, which can get around GotT.
I think that it is still way to early to tell. Traditionally U/W and Jund have been reasonably good matches. However, we still don't know how their inclusion will effect the overall deck building process. Or which JtMS / BBE archetype will emerge dominant, and how the meta will shift to fight them. Until we know that, and test hundreds of games, we have knowing how much more viable Emeria will be against those strategies.
Hey there, new here on the forum, but reading this thread for a while now. I'm a big fan of Emeria. Love the game play, and took my deck to a competitive FNM in the Netherlands yesterday. Like to share a report from it. Went 2-2.
Game 1 vs 5 color humans: 0-2
Match 1: took a mulligan for 6, kept a risky 1 land hand, had double wall of omens in hand and was on the draw. Unfortunate didn’t draw any lands after that. He killed me turn 5
Match 2: played T1 Kami of false hope, T2 Wall of Omens and T3 Gideon of the Trails. Took the emblem with Gideon. In the meanwhile he played Meddling Mage on Supreme Verdict (which I had in hand).
He went aggro on Gideon but it took him 4 turns. (With help from Kami for 2 turns in a row (after returning him with Ojutai's command). I felt I controlled the game.
Then my hand was double flickerwisp and supreme verdict with 8 mana on board. I flickered the Meddling Mage and casted Supreme Verdict. Big mistake, I forgot he had Xathrid Necromancer on the table and lost to a zombie swarm. I was to hasty, had to path Xathrid first.
Game 2 vs 5 color humans (again) 2-0
Match 1: played Spreading Seas on both T2 and T3. He thought I played UW control and didn’t expect the Supreme Verdict on T4. Whiped 4 humans. Then started the Ghost Quarter lock. He ran just 2 basic lands. Resulted in a easy win.
Match 2: he had an aggro start. I went to 4 life on turn 4. I tried to survive this fast game. Played a Detention sphere on his (transformed) Mayor of Avabruck. Flickerwisped his big Champion of the Parish. Took the emblem with Gideon of the Trials, and started +1 on his Mantis Rider Eventually slammed a Sun Titan. He tried to kill Gideon for 3 turns. Unsuccesfull. Then scooped it up frustrated as he saw Emeria was about becoming active.
Game 3 vs Grixis Death Shadow 2-0
Match 1: He played Inquisition of Kozilek on my path to exile T1 and saw me having a Supreme Verdict. I played Spreading Seas T2 and Court Hussar T3 (found a Detention Sphere). He played slow, obviously waiting voor the Verdict. Therefore I decided to verdict his only creature (Tasigur, the golden fang). Then he slammed double Death's Shadow (both 9/9). But he was tapped out. I played the Dsphere on them. He ran out of gas, I got Emeria active. That closed the game.
Match 2: a game we both drew a lot of lands. I pathed a fast played Gurmag Angler. Verdicted a Death's Shadow and Snapcaster mage. Had a Sun Titan in hand and found another one. Opponent had a hand full of cards but didn’t have the right removal for the Titans. Game over.
Game 4 vs Bant Knightfall 0-2
Match 1: thought I played regular bant company. But it turned out Bant with the Retreat to Coralhelm and Knight of the Reliquary combo. I wasn’t familiar with the combo. Detention sphered 2 Noble Hierarch and saved my Supreme Verdict for later. Then lost to the combo (a 20/20 knight of the reliquary and a tapped defense).
Match 2: saved my Path for the knight combo. But he found a Scavenging Ooze with Collected Company. Had to path to exile this annoying Emeria-card. And with all the verdicts, dspere’s, path’s and kami’s in my library I felt pretty safe for a possible knight combo. Unfortunate, I didn’t drew any of these. And lost to the combo again.
Overall:
Went 2-2. Happy with the result. My wins were easy, my losses close or unfortunate. Could / should have been 3-1
Surprised with the easy win on Death's Shadow. And 5-color Humans is an easy matchup under normal circumstances.
Deck evaluation: Gideon of the Trials is an all-star. Really won me a few games. Court hussar is great too. Would never consider to swap with Blade Splicer. The card-draw quality it represents is exactly what this deck needs.
Played with 4x Supreme Verdict. A bit risky maybee, but it felt pretty good after all!
Nice to know. There was another Emeria deck that night. He went 4-0! He played the classic version of Emeria with Pilgrim'sEye, Mortarpod and Aether Spellbomb.
Go Emeria!
Wow, good job! That's a pretty good finish all things considering. I do have a few suggestions regarding your list. With multiple Humans decks in your meta, it may be best to diversify your wrath selection. Think, Settle the Wreckage or Wrath of God. This plays around an opposing Meddling Mage naming Supreme Verdict. Also, a rule of thumb I always use; If my opponent is playing in WG colors and plays Collected Company then beware of a combo. It could be devoted druid or it could be retreat but be sure to keep up your instant speed removal.
Have to agree with Fincown. It's better to have at least one Wrath of God in the main. In case opponent has meddling mages. I used to have 3 verdict... but recently changed to two verdict and 1 wrath split. Although they are few... there are also annoying things in modern that can regenerate.. Ezuri, Experiment One, and Thrun - wrath gets rid of them just fine.
Thanks, will consider Wrath of God. Although, Meddling Mage didn't feel like a problem (with the all the removal we play). But thanks!
Did you guys ever cast Settle the wreckage on yourself to put Emeria online? Feels like a suicide action, with the exile trigger. But maybee...
The rule of thump is definitely a thing, I will keep in mind Fincown!
The presence of regeneration is not currently high. EO is infrequent, as is Thrun. Ezuri and Welding Jar are things though. One Wrath is not reliable enough against decks that play, either. Meanwhile, countermagic is down a bit, though Jace could reverse that, but Meddling Mage is pretty big. So we need to prioritize beating humans, countermagic, or Elves plus Affinity (and to some extent other green decks).
We run 3-4 sweepers MD, with 1-2 more in the SB. Even numbers of Verdict + Wrath seem like a good way to manage the environment overall, though if you're very worried about facing Humans you can diversify by swapping in a Day or Settle (probably over Wrath, IMO).
Why Day of Judgment over Wrath of God? In my experience, Humans normally name Supreme Verdict in the dark. It also really depends on your meta, if shadow, geist or merfolk decks are more popular then verdict is where you want to be. However if it's humans, elves or affinity wrath is the better choice. Finally, if you expect to see a lot of hollow one or dredge, Settle the Wreckage is amazing.
It should also be mentioned that Thrun, the Last Troll may see a lot more sideboard play now, to fight Jace, the Mind Sculptor decks. People also have a predisposition to bring this in against us, because of it being good against mainstream UW(x) archetypes. He is just an annoyance generally, but if you want to fight Thrun both Wrath of God or Settle the Wreckage can deal with him. So in that situation, 2 Verdict, 1 Wrath, and 1 Settle in the side may be a good set up.
