What do you guys think of dropping the 2 tec edge for a more consistent manabase? How often I can't cast on turn 2 my 2 drop because it require 2 color mana...
Hey friends! I’ve been creeping on this thread for over a year now so I thought it was finally time to register and put my two cents in about GW Hatebears and the currently shifting modern metagame. I have been piloting various builds of this deck for quite some time in local tournaments and on cockatrice, but haven’t had the opportunity to compete at a Grand Prix or SCG recently. For a few months our Selesnya buddies have been pushed to the corner of the format, but with a few new cards and some old sleepers I feel like we are currently well positioned!
This is the list I have run at my past two tournaments going 4-0 each time. My local modern meta is full of variety, but there is an absence of Bogles, Lantern, and Tron decks. However Bant Eldrazi, Dredge, Blood moon and Valakut decks have seen a recent surge in popularity, so I have tuned my list to compensate.
Voice of Resurgence, Wilt-Leaf Liege, and Aethervial have been cut in favor for mana dorks and other familiar cards. Voice wasn’t doing its thing recently and conflicts with Rest in Peace in the board (which comes in often) and Liege has been difficult to cast too many times. Aethervial creates poor play patterns (in my opinion) and Birds allows you to cast Thalia, Heretic Cathar on turn 2.
I have seen most lists running 0 to 3 Thalia, Heretic Cathar, but I firmly believe that 4 is the correct number. She is critical to this decks strategy and her static abilities create scenarios that are often similar to time walks, while randomly shutting down things like Nahari’s ultimate and Through the Breach. Put all of that on top of a 3/2 first strike is no joke, especially when exalted on offense or combined with her little sister for 5 damage first strike on defense.
Hushwing Gryff has been added to the main where Restoration Angel used to be to combat company decks, Eldrazi, and Snapcaster Mage. This is a direct response to my metagame, but you could choose to run Gryff or Angel – but I would not run both at the same time.
Dromoka’s Command was in the sideboard, but kept coming in frequently and has been incredibly flexible and tricky – so I moved one to the main.
The other new card is Blessed Alliance, which has been an all star against a number of decks and also provides a lot of flexibility. It isn’t that uncommon to have your opponent sacrifice and attacker while you untap a Smiter and a first striker for blocks creating incredible board swings. Against burn, the 4 life matters a lot and can take down a swiftspear early in the game. Bonus points if you can get your opponent to sacrifice a pumped up infector or an exalted reality smasher! 8)
The second Linvala has been added to the board due to the rise in mana dorks and Eldrazi, but could be the flex slot if you don’t want the second. Everything else is pretty straightforward I think!
Any questions, comments or criticism is appreciated! No one has posted in this thread in almost 2 weeks, so lets keep this discussion alive! Long live the good guys!
Hey Danilompaula, thanks for your input! What is your reasoning for these choices? My reasonings were this..
Because of Thalia Guardian of Thraben, Collected company is going to cost me 5 mana a lot of the time, and most of the decks I want to cast company against, I am also bringing in Gaddock Teeg so I couldn't cast company anyway
The Linvala is due to an abundance of Eldrazi/Hierarch decks right now, but would be the second card to cut in the main I think after the tec edge
The 4th birds is there to maximize my chances of landing a turn 2 Thalia Heretic Cathar/Smiter/Mindcensor/Hushwing
The 3rd stirring wildwood is one of the primary win conditions against control, and also makes a great blocker against infect, affinity, and zoo!
I could definitely see cutting the 1 of tectonic edge for another gavony township though! The townships win me more games than tectonic edge does for sure!
Not saying these choices are correct or incorrect, just giving you the reasons why I made them!
I suggested Collected Companny due to 8 dorks, and with that many mana CMC 5 could not be so expensive, and gives to you a good lategame plan against grindy decks, but I did not notice that you uses 3 gaddock.
As you dont use liege/voice/finks, the second gavony township would be very useful turning your guys in finishers.

Hi! I see that this thread is not super active but I really like your list.
What do you think about x1 eiganjo castle maindeck? x7 thalias, x3 gaddock teeg, x2 linvala... seems like the castle is super good in this deck.
I've been playing a fairly similar list to the one that got 4th at GP Indi, https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/466054#online, I was wondering how do I effectively sideboard in rest in peace. I often find myself wanting to put them in and keep in my other graveyard interacting cards such as Eternal Witness, Finks, and Ooze. Some decks I like to bring rest in peace in against are Dredge, Jund, Abzan, Abzan coco, Living End. Eternal Witness, Finks, and Ooze all seem decent to great in a lot of these match ups.
It would be cool to read some insight on how you guys sideboard.
@RPD - Yes Eiganjo Castle could be effective in quite a few match ups! I think its a very reasonable choice if you can fit it in the manabase. You may find it inconvenient to hold up white mana + castle every turn though - which is why I took it out when I very first started playing this deck, but then I forgot about the castle until now (I only run one card with WW in the casting cost) my list only runs 1 land that produces white only (plains) the rest of lands I wanted to produce green for scavenging ooze
Currently I am using Dromoka's Command against Anger of the Gods, Pyroclasm, and Lightning Bolt.
@LaughingPelso - Thomaster87 hit the nail on the head. Voice, Finks, and Eternal Witness have been cut my list so I can effectively use Rest in Peace in the match ups where it is most effective. However you want to give yourself the highest probability of having some graveyard hate in your opening hand. If you are still running Voice, Finks, and Eternal Witness and Rest in Peace in the side.. I would side out Voice and Finks, but leave in all Oozes and 1 Eternal Witness (Because you can get Rest in Peace Back from the Yard if it gets destroyed or discarded! Versus Jund I always bring in all my Rest in Peace - it slows them way down and makes combat difficult for them - and don't forget it shuts down 1/2 of Kalitas and Grim Lavamancer as well as the afformentioned Tarmogoyf and Grim Flayer! Against Grixis, Living End, and Dredge - Rest in Peace is our very best sideboard card!
My current list is on 23 lands, and running a full playset of Horizon Canopies. I'm trying to build it in paper and was wondering if it would make sense to run Grasslands instead of the Canopies for budget reasons. Thanks!
Just getting back into Modern after a break shortly after the release of Shadows Over Innistrad, haven't played any magic since then. Added some new cards to my deck, going with a more mid-rangey build because of the cards I have available. Using Collected Company since I don't have Aether Vial and cannot afford to get them at the moment. How's this list look for going to weekly Modern?
Some notes about the list: Den Protector is there as a place holder until I get something better to replace him, maybe a Gisela? I don't know the meta now so I'm using my old side board. My budget for adding to the deck is limited, so I can't get anything more than $10.
Played at local store and went 3-0 against RWU control. Voice, Smiter, and Sigarda put in the work to secure the win.

Collecting Timbermare, hit me up if you have any for trade
I've been playtesting a Junk Hatebears list and it's been running pretty well. The deck plays 4 Bob and 4 Horizon canopy so the CA is pretty good. They cause life loss but finks and siege rhino make up for that loss of life and are nice to be blinked in with flickerwhisp. I also like finks and rhino together because my opponent needs to pick their poison with board wipes with having anger not kill my rhino or verdict/wrath having my finks survive.
I run 9 lands that produce black mana and 4 birds and 4 aether vials, so getting my mana for Bob/Rhino hasn't been a big deal. I also love running 12 fastlands with 4 Horizon Canopies/Ghost quarters, which I sacrifice a lot so my ghost quarter doesn't come in tapped. Anyway, this is my list:
I play death and taxes with eldrazi. What is the difference between green white hatebears and that deck? It has had some suckess resently, but I have not seen green white hatebears do it that good. Am I mistaken?
I am only asking because I am trying to get insight in the green deck.

I have dyslexia, no I am not going to spell check for you, yes you have to live with the horrors of it.
Both decks utilize Aether Vial but it is required for Death and Taxes and isn't for Hatebears. So this shows that Death and Taxes likes flashing in stuff with Vial to create value and disruption. They play cards like Flickerwisp and Blade Splicer while Hatebears plays Scavenging Oozes and Voice of Resurgence. There is overlap with Thalia 1.0 and 2.0. Leonin Arbiter, and Aven Mindcensor but the philosophies on how the decks function is different. Hatebears is more linear with value 2/2s while Death and Taxes tries to maximize the taxing aspect with vial.
