Another Wednesday another modern tournament with Soul Sisters. This week? 3rd place.
First round bye. Second round 1-1-1 against jund. We went to time due to my martyr recursion, and couldn't draw a single Rest In Piece that I sideboarded in (3) to stop his goyf, deathrite, scavenging ooze, ect. I went 2-0 vs selesnya midrange. Ascendanta ftw.
Lost 1-2 to splinter twin. Game there kept a one mana hand with triple SS, martyr, acendant, honor, and ranger. Now I could have dumpted the SS's to stop his combo, but I went the aggro way trying to get my acendant online asap and beat his face. Which I did. When I swong for lethal he flashed in the tapper and untap splinter twin. So GG there. Lesson learned.
Really looking to sideboard Suppression Field. It just rapes other tier one decks. Fetch lands, splinter twin, planeswalkers, deathrite, scavenging ooze, spellskite, eggs are all nerffed. Definitely want the 3 off SB
How come lists are going away from 4 Windbrisk Heights?
Heights can lead to slow starts especially if you draw 2 or more early on, I am currently running 2 of them as I believe the deck needs the extra card advantage sometimes.
Still needs a lot of tweaking. As soon as I can get them I want 3-4 MB Auriok Champion 4 Flagstones of Trokair Maybe some Ghost Quarter. I want 3 Suppression field to replace the Stony Silence in the SB. A Hero Of Bladehold as a one of SB. 2 more Aven Mincensorand maybe some other stuff, some of this stuff seems like a great addition to the deck, but some of it is just a meta call.
I love him. Fetchable with Ranger of Eos. Means I can basically get an honor of the pure with ranger of I need it. He's basically a tech choice for me. He can die to removal but he just a must answer threat that will turn spirit tokens into angel tokens.
Removed my singleton Emeria, the sky ruin as I have never gotten it online. The full playset of Ghost Quarters is because there is at least 1 R/G Tron deck and multiple Affinity decks running around my local meta.

Round 1: vs Gruul Aggro
Game 1: Opponent kept 2 land hand and I pathed his Deathrite Shaman. His only plays were a Goblin Guide and 2 Rakdos Cacklers all of which died to my Auroik Champion pumped with Honor of the Pure. Spirit tokens and Squadrons hawks beat down for game.
Game 2: I should not have kept a one land hand especially with mostly 2 drops in my hand. Opponent flooded board with creatures on third turn and after goldfishing for a bit I scooped.
Game 3: Able to make favorable trades, spirit tokens, Ajani's and hawks led to victory
2-1
Win
1-0
Round 2: vs Monoblue Tron
Game 1: Grinded away at opponent through enormous amounts of counterspells only to not find an answer for a resolved Platinum Angel. A wurmcoil engine a few turns later put me on a clock I could not keep up with.
Game 2: Turn 1 Serra's, turn 2 Ajani's, turn 3 Sister + Honor, turn 4 Procession, turn 5 concession.
Game 3: Incredibly grindy match where I could barely resolve any spells. Opponent wasted his Mindslaver really early. Went to time and on turn 5 with me at 26 life my opponent could only deal 18 damage if I chose not to block.
1-1
Tie
1-0-1
Round 3: vs Naya Zoo
Game 1: Board flooded with 2/3s and 3/3s courtesy of kird ape, loam lion, and experiment one. Really wish I had a board wipe.
Game 2: Double Honors + Procession and Auriok champion playing defense. 9 Damage a turn is a lot a second Procession lead to a concession.
Game 3: Close match but again Honors and Procession lead to victory. Was able to pad my life enough with Martyr and chump enough times with Hawks. Opponent was unable to find the removal he needed and I had Hero of Bladehold in hand to play on my next turn.
2-1
Win
2-0-1
Round 4: vs Boros Landfall Aggro
Game 1: A turn 2 Isochron Scepter with Bolt lead me to think I was just against a scepter deck so game 2 sided in Stony Silence. The Bolt under scepter meant I couldn't keep a creature on the field. Elsbeth and Assemble the Legion gave him beats to end the game with.
Game 2: Honor of the Pure does work. Squadron hawks and Spirit tokens + some life gain to prevent my death.
Game 3: Really grindy went to time in round. While I wasn't able to keep many threats out on the field, double honors to replace the one he Teared ensured each creature I played was a threat. Ranger of Eos searching up double Martyr ensured I never was in danger of a one shot KO. Was able to get rid of all but one of his creatures as we went into numbered turns. His Elsbeth ultimate didn't do much as I dropped him to 1 on Turn 3 with myself still at 21. Rather than let me beat him, on Turn 4 he chose to kill himself with Volcanic Fallout
2-1
Win
3-0-1
Three wins and a tie gave me second place out of 18 players.
This was my first time placing in a Modern event and only my third time placing in an event period.
Before the tournament began I swapped Auroik Champions 2 & 3 for Aven Mindcensors from my sideboard as the local meta involves Pod, Tron, and Valakut based decks. However, with the exception of the Tron match up I much would have rather had the Champions.
Given that I lost 2 games due to creature swarm and have lost vs Affinity in playtesting because of this I plan on including 2 copies of Wrath of God in my sideboard once I acquire them. I'll be taking out my Leyline and Thalia as I have not seen a single Storm deck being played.
The definitive MVPs of this tournament were Honor of the Pure and Spectral Procession. Honor single handedly won me most of my games.
I definitely made misplays and I don't know how many times I missed Soul Sister triggers. My biggest missplay was probably in Game 1 of Round 3. Opponent had Lightning Bolt under scepter. I had out 2 sisters and Serra's with 23 life and 2 white cards in hand. I should have played Martyr of Sands before attacking as it would have kept my bolted Serra's alive.
My playing has improved quite a bit since my last tournament, my goal is no longer to stay above 30 life, I don't think I ever had an active Serra's Ascendant the entire tournament. Most games I hovered in between the upper teens and lower twenties. The goal was to survive long enough for me to resolve multiple threats using the extra life as buffer.
Based off of these results I'm wondering whether I should be playing W/B tokens over Sisters.....

Looking at my match ups and looking at how the games went, I'd say against Gruul aggro I had 60:40 favorable post board, Naya Zoo was 55:45, Monoblue Tron was 35:65, and Boros Landfall was 60:40. I worked hard in all the matches I won. Had the Tron match not gone to time, I would have lost in about 2-3 more turns. While I am able to shut down the Mindslaver lock, I didn't really have an answer for Platinum Angel.
Rumor is that Theros is giving us an enchantment based Path? I am tempted to put in Journey to Nowhere as additional spot removal, but I'm more likely to just go with Wraths in the side.

Yeah I just saw the spoiler for it. Very disappointed. It means that Boros Landfall deck I played against gets more toys and so far we don't.
I really hope Theros gives us something good but so far I haven't seen anything

Yes I agree, I love Soul Sisters, but I feel it's time we got a little something new for the deck, Jund just got a Makeover with RtR and Supreme and Revelation are getting popular in UW(X), and Snap caster from Innistrad needs no introduction..
where's the mono-white SS love? :c
I've still been tempted to try and make a viable Mono-white Midrange deck that can curve out to 5 with Archangel of Thune, and Elespeth, knight Errant. Both of those cards are just ridiculous for our aggro game plan.
That's what I could come up with right now off the top of my head while typing this, but the main idea is basically to make all our dude Ajani's pridemates with the angel, the best way to do that is by gaining as many little life gain triggers as possible instead of the larger single life gain triggers (hence why there is no martyr.) Also why I added more token cards, with 2 SS's out a single spectral procession or lingering souls is +6-8 counters on every dude we have. Add Elspeth to turn them to the sky and we have a serious clock.
Of course a turn five angel that hits the board and does nothing (Unless we have SS's out which would basically Auto trigger our team!) is pretty slow compared to most combo decks in the format, but it just seems like we can "go bigger"

So this guy. Could he justify a blue splash? The worst thing that could happen is we hit a land.
If that's all i would take I think we would have splashed a color long ago, IMO.
He is good, I mean he basically is an auto unblockable if we have an honor out. He might let us gain a little life off each swing. But I feel he would just eat a bolt. Also, sure we can cast anything off the top with just white mana, but with a deck that curves out a 4? I doubt we'll have the mana to spare for the big 5-6 drops "That we wanna hit." Even though most decks curve out to 4 anyway.. He's an interesting dude, but not quite what I think the deck is looking for..
Hero of Bladehold I run in my sideboard for Control matchups. It survives Bolts and blocks really well. Additionally both of its abilities are great, popping out 1/1s triggers our Sisters and Battle Cry speeds up the clock. Some lists mainboard it.
I brought it in against Naya Zoo on Friday but my opponent conceded the turn before I played it. It would have been able to block pretty much anything in their deck besides Woolly Thoctar and the 1/1s would give me more chump blockers and attackers.

Could Hero of Bladehold have a home here?
Most likely, actually hero might speed up the deck a bit with Battlecry. I just wasn't thinking about her when I made that quick decklist.
