We are playing a deck with expendables creatures. If we want a good creature that is not, we play Mirran Crusader. Path ot Exile deals with it but Bodyguard is also inefficient against that card. I'm still waiting for a Human that doesn't lose to Path and/or Bolt, and Bodyguard ain't that card. Knight of Malice might be better VS PtE decks.
For Grixis, Burn and even Jund to some extend we can play Fiendslayer Paladin. Goyf and Lili can be troublesome though. Here Mirran Crusader is better. Bolt though... Take your pick.
Top deck Bodyguard and play it on a field with 3/3 Lieutenant, MedMage and Freebooter. Which one do you protect? You can be sure opponent will remove the others, and not care about the Bodyguard. Because with Bodyguard, you're essentially giving opponent the choice of ignoring it.
But Saffi can't be ignored. Play her, and you can protect them all from the next removal. Lieutenant will lose its counters, but will trigger again and put counters on MedMage and Freebooter. You'll get to reset MedMage and Freebooter and, of course, that can be bad (but not necessarily). But I prefer having the opportunity of giving *less* choices to my opponent.
And what's the big deal protecting your turn 2 creature with Bodyguard from Vial if it can't protect the more important pieces you'll play in the next 2-3 turns? MedMage is more precious to protect than Freebooter, IMHO. But Freebooter often precedes MedMage to get informations. Turn 2 Bodyguard from Vial will only protect the less important Freebooter, while a turn 3 Saffi will protect MedMage (or Freebooter, if that's what you want).
Play Bodyguard to protect your only creature. It gets removed while Bodyguard is on the stack. Bodyguard does nothing. Saffi will not save a creature removed while she's on the stack, but she's a 2/2 that can attack into Snapcaster if pumped with a Lieutenant (2/1 can't do that) and will protect the next important creature you'll play.
The more I think about Bodyguard, the more I think it gives too much choices to opponent, and will too often be very frustrating to play.
I've already ordered a pair of Saffi. If I can have them by tomorrow, I'll test her in the main deck, along with Kytheon. I appreciate having 10 one-drops, and beleive it's sound in the metagame to have certain protection from removals. I'll try her instead of 2 Image.
@patbou bodyguard's first ability is a replacement ability so your opponent can't respond to it. They can kill a creature while dauntless is on the stack but you can just choose another. This means bodyguard is less good as a t2 vial target but it overall has the advantage of being a one drop.
I think the deck needs to skew a bit more towards the low end of the curve to have a shot at burning out the jace decks before they set up their value engines.
Hi guys needing a bit of help with an issue due to a modern unified modern event, currently the team is using two decks with seachrome coast wondering if there is an effective way to pivot this out of humans without disrupting the mana to much ? ive seen the use of Reflecting Pool and just cant agree with it, is going up on basics doable with a deck like this ?
If you have to replace coast I guess you could use hallowed fountain? The blue is important for phantasmal. It definitely won't be optimal. Maybe razorverge thicket if you don't have many image.
I'm actually down to 1 Coast and using 1 Island. 2nd basic can help a lot when you're facing decks with Path. The other land you can try out Mana Confluence/City of Brass.
For Grixis, Burn and even Jund to some extend we can play Fiendslayer Paladin
If ever Mardu and other bolt decks take a good chunk of the meta, Paladin en-Vec may rise in the discussion. It attacks through Bedlam Reveler, Young Pyromancer and cie, Dredge and Hollow One various creatures, Burn and BRx Midrange. It's a slow clock though, but hard to deal with outside of PtE. Still waiting for a new Human being better in that role. #crossmyfingers
Back to Benalish Marshall, I think what could've made this card work is if it had been a X/4, aka a decent answer to red decks overall (Anger decks and Burn).

I play 1 Reflecting Pool and 1 Seachrome Coast. RefPool worked well for me as a singleton. We've seen Jonathan Rossum and Collins Mullen play 2 copies of RefPool to support Pia and Kiran Nalaar recently. I would trust their professional judgment that at least one is fine. The other can be Hallowed Fountain or Mana Confluence, if you can't play Fountain because of team restrictions.

What's the other deck which needs Coast? One of the stronger points of Humans is the complete lack of lifeloss in the Manabase. I was on fetch-shock before, but came to realize this aspect of the deck, while still a race, is really important vs. Affinity and Burn decks.

Paladin en-Vec vs Fiendslayer Paladin in an interesting one. It's a matter of Protection vs quasi hexproof. the former blocks Black delvers for days but I also feel the lifegain of the latter vs. Burn is very important, in my first Bant COCO build of Humans i've had the Burn player concede upon sight.
Humans with BBE and Coco ain't a Human list anymore, right ?
BTW Humans won the GP. G1 goldfish, G2 flooded, G3 Bob proving he's bad on the draw against us. I won so many times because of Bobs pinging their owner too hard. Definitely a questionable choice by the Jund player to keep discard spells and Bobs, and also a poor decision G1 by discarding Med Mage.
What I take from this Finals is that very few players know their Human MU. Also glad to see the winner plays only 3 Thalias + 3 Images like I do, I feel less lonely.

It's a form of reach, and as demonstrated in a match versus Jeskai control from Zan Syed, it's a nice comback after a wrath. Though i''m not convinced by the utility Pia and Kiran provide in this deck. Pia Nalaar offers the same base body, human creature type but her abilities are easier to our mana base. Only trading one thopter for one mana discount. After a wrath she can be used to keep blockers in check, provides a manasink and some form of reach trough evasion.
Also, like Pia and Kiran, makes multiple copies of Aether Vial worthwile.
I run her as my utility creature of choise in standard at the moment. Just my 2cts.

Hey guys. How would you say mono white humans are compared to 5c? I’ve been looking at mono white for some time now and was interested in putting it together, but then didn’t want to waste my time if it won’t be any good.
Mono white has very few disruptive elements, so it's a different deck. It hasn't proven to be good enough. I suppose monoW Knights will be stronger than monoW Humans with the release of Dominaria. Knights will still be worse than 5C Humans though.
I believe Humans always splash a second color in the budget / all-in aggro versions anyway.

Correct me if I’m wrong. Mono white is more taxing and aggro where 5C is more disruption and control.
I don’t really see much in a Dominaria that would be an upgrade imo.

You may want to include Field Marshal if you go mono white. Lieutenant and Champion are both Soldiers, and I think Thalia is also a Soldier.

I was looking at Field Marshall. He would definitely fit the theme. You think that style deck has enough going for it to be any good?
